News: Samsung's TouchWiz Updates Aren't as Bad as You Think

Smartphones have been around for nearly a decade now, so we've had plenty of time to develop preconceptions and bias. People that have never owned an iPhone will tell you that Apple devices are restrictive and bland, while others might say that stock Android is boring compared to manufacturer skins like HTC's Sense, despite never having owned a Nexus or Pixel. When it comes to preconceived notions, Samsung suffers in the court of public opinion more than any phone manufacturer not named Apple. And the loudest narrative you'll hear is how long the wait is for new Android updates to reach Galaxy devices—either as a result of Samsung's TouchWiz skin supposedly taking longer to update, or because the company simply doesn't care about its customers enough to make sure their devices are running the latest Android version. At some point in the past, there might have been a fair amount of truth to this claim. But as it stands today, Samsung devices are actually among the most frequently updated Android phones, so it's time to dispel this myth once and for all.Don't Miss: Why Manufacturers Need to Stop Messing with Android The Galaxy S7 Edge will receive Android updates for quite some time. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

Total Number of Android UpdatesBetween June 2014 and March 2016, Samsung released a total of nine different flagship devices—the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note5, Galaxy S7, and S7 Edge. That's a massive lineup compared to the five models Apple released during that span, or the three Nexus phones that Google offered during the same time frame.Yet, believe it or not, every single one of these phones has been updated to 6.0.1, the latest version of Android Marshmallow (as of this writing), so Samsung has offered consistent support for more than two years at this point. While not all of them will end up getting Nougat support, Samsung is working on getting at least the S7 devices started with Android 7.0. They even have a beta rolling out soon.Don't Miss:Google Promises 2 Years of Updates for Its Nexus DevicesGoogle's own Nexus devices (and now Pixels) have always been the undisputed champion of Android updates—at least, in terms of total length of support. For comparison's sake, Google recently published an update timeline clearly stating that Nexus devices will only receive updates to the latest version of Android for two years, with an additional year of security patches tacked on at the end. We can assume the Pixels are on the same schedule. If the Galaxy S5 is any indication, Samsung might finally be approaching Google's level when it comes to updating their devices. The phone is currently running the latest version of Android Marshmallow, despite being only five months newer than the Nexus 5, a device that Google will stop supporting in October 2016. Worst case, the Galaxy S5 will have spent 30 months with full update support, compared to 36 for the Nexus 5. Google's Nexus 5 will soon stop receiving Android updates. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks
Monthly Security PatchesIf that's not impressive enough, let's talk about monthly security patches, a new initiative designed to prevent Android devices from falling victim to the latest hacks and vulnerabilities. Many manufacturers have had sketchy track records when it comes to this, with Motorola even flat-out stating that they won't issue security patches each month, as it would be too costly.Despite the fact that the expense would be even greater when spread across such a massive lineup of flagship devices, Samsung has fully committed to the new monthly security patch program, and continues to issue security updates on a timely schedule.

Speed of UpdatesOne area where Samsung has typically lagged behind other manufacturers is how quickly they're able to push out a new Android update. When a new version is released to Nexus devices, most manufacturers will take months to release their own firmware updates, and Samsung has been towards the back of the pack in years past. But as of June 2016, Samsung has surpassed Motorola to become the fastest Android manufacturer when it comes to releasing firmware updates, according to a study by Apteligent. The data collected excluded Nexus devices, but this is definitely a positive trend. The Galaxy S6 Edge already running the latest Android version and security patches. Exceptions & Counter-ArgumentsSamsung manufactures a lot of devices, with at least twelve different smartphones carrying the Galaxy name each year, and many of those divided into multiple unique variants. Several models—particularly the low-end devices—do not receive the same level of support as the flagship devices we've discussed so far. Maintaining a team of developers to issue Android updates costs a lot of money, so it doesn't make financial sense to release a budget phone and keep it updated constantly. However, some of Samsung's more expensive phones still have a poor track record with updates. Most notably, the Galaxy S Active, a series of rugged devices exclusive to AT&T, is generally not updated beyond the first year. It's also possible that you own a newer Galaxy S or Galaxy Note device, but did not receive a full two years' worth of updates. (If you got the Galaxy Note7, you probably didn't even get a couple days of action with it, but that's for another story.) Using the Galaxy S5 as an example, some variants have still not received the Android Marshmallow update, and likely never will. But this is the fault of cellular carriers, not Samsung. Many US carriers—particularly AT&T and Verizon—will stop issuing firmware updates to their carrier-branded Galaxy devices, even when Samsung is still actively supporting them. The Galaxy S5 Active is still stuck on Android Lollipop. Image via Samsung
ConclusionSamsung has definitely stepped up its update game, to the point where they're now among the leaders in promptness, number of updates, and security patches. Nonetheless, you should still avoid their low-end devices if updates are important to you, and if you can swing it, buy your phone unlocked instead of through your carrier.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Downgrade iOS 12 Back to 11.4.1 on Your iPhone

How To: Downgrade iOS 12 Back to 11.4.1 on Your iPhone
Apple's goal with iOS 12 is to smooth out the problems with its famously flawed predecessor. Of course, change isn't for everyone, and by iOS 11.4.1, Apple had a pretty stable thing going. If you're not digging all the bugs and new features included in iOS 12, here's how to downgrade your iPhone back to iOS 11.4.1.Since Apple just released iOS 12 on Monday, Sept. 17, it's a good guess that the company will stop signing iOS 11.4.1 in October sometime. When Apple released iOS 11, they stopped signing iOS 10.3.3 just 15 days after, so you can expect a similar time frame. After this point, it will be impossible to downgrade from iOS 12 unless you saved your SHSH2 blobs, which I'm guessing many of you have never even heard of.More Info: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS Later You'll be able to go back to the last version of iOS 11 using iTunes for macOS or Windows, as long as you archived an iOS 11 backup before updating to iOS 12. However, you can still downgrade to iOS 11 without a backup, only you will have to start with a clean slate.

Step 1: Disable 'Find My iPhone'As with any restore, you'll want to disable Find My iPhone, though this can be done later when erasing the device since you'll be prompted to do so. It's just easier to get it out of the way first so there are no hiccups later.First, open the Settings app, then tap your name at the top of the list and select "iCloud." On the following page, scroll down and tap "Find My iPhone," then disable "Find My iPhone." Enter your Apple ID password when prompted, and Find My iPhone will be disabled.
Step 2: Download the IPSW File for Your iPhoneNext, download the iOS 11.4.1 IPSW file for your particular iPhone using the links below. We've included iPad and iPod Touch links for your convenience. This is the firmware file you'll use with iTunes to roll back your device. All of the links below are from Apple's servers, so you don't have to worry about security.iPhone X iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus iPhone 7 iPhone 7 Plus iPhone 6S iPhone 6S Plus iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus iPhone SE iPhone 5S 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation) 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) 10.5-inch iPad Pro 9.7-inch iPad Pro 9.7-inch iPad (6th generation) 9.7-inch iPad (5th generation) iPad Air 2 iPad Air iPad mini 4 iPad mini 3 iPad mini 2 iPod touch (6th generation) The files above are rather large, so it may take a while to download the one your device needs. If you're on a Mac, it the download file should appear in your "Downloads" folder.

Step 3: Connect Your iPhone to iTunesOnce the appropriate file has finished downloading, connect your iPhone to your Mac or Windows computer using a Lightning to USB or Lightning to USB-C cable, whichever works best for your computer. Hopefully, iTunes opens automatically. If not ...You may have to unlock your iPhone. Check to see if an "Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories" notification is on your lock screen. If so, unlock your device. After doing so, you may also have to trust your computer if it's the first time connecting to the computer. Also, iTunes may prompt you to install an update in order to connect the iOS 12 device, so make sure to do so.Don't Miss: Disable the 'Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories' Alert on Your iPhone Once it's connected to iTunes, you should see the phone icon appear next to the media dropdown as well as under "Devices" in the sidebar. Click on either options to go to your Summary screen for your device.

Step 4: Install iOS 11.4.1 on Your iPhoneIf you're using a Mac, hold down the Option key and click on "Restore iPhone" in the Summary screen for your iPhone in iTunes. For PC users, hold down Shift instead while doing the same thing. A file browser menu will appear, so when it does, find and select the IPSW file that you downloaded in Step 2 above. Click "Open" once it's selected. Next, a popup will appear in iTunes informing you that iOS 11.4.1 will be installed on your iPhone. Click "Restore" on this prompt to confirm, then it's just a waiting game from here. During the installation process, you may need to enter your passcode on the iPhone, so don't walk away while it's doing its magic. When your iPhone has finally rebooted and appears on the welcome screen to start setting up iOS 11.4.1, it's okay to disconnect your iPhone from the computer. The rest can be down wirelessly.

Step 5: Restore Your iPhone from a BackupSince your iPhone has essentially erased itself, you'll need to run through the initial setup steps. If you want to start from scratch, select "Set Up as New iPhone." If you want all your apps and data back, you can try "Restore from iCloud Backup" as long as you have a proper backup for iOS 11. Try updating to an iOS 12 iCloud backup, and it will make you install iOS 12 during the setup process, which is not what you want at all. If you want all your apps and data back, you can also tap "Restore from iTunes Backup," in which case, you'll need an iOS 11.4.1 archived backup. The process below outlines this step since it's not as intuitive. When restoring with your archived backup, make sure you're still connected to iTunes and select your iPhone in the application. From there, select "Restore Backup," then choose your archived backup file from the list, and hit "Restore." (An archived backup will have the data and time in the actual backup name, as opposed to other backups that will just have the device name only.) If your archived backup of iOS 11.4.1 is encrypted, you'll need to enter your password to continue.Wait for the restore to complete before disconnecting your iPhone. It should restart, and it will need to sync with iTunes. Once it's done syncing, you have successfully downgraded to iOS 11.4.1 with all your data intact.Don't Miss: 6 Cool Features in iOS 11.4 for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Downgrade iPhone 3G To 3.1.X

So, you're all excited you went ahead and 'upgraded' your iPhone 3G to IOS 4.0X so you could reap all the benefits of all the new features. As it turns out, many of the best features in IOS 4.0X are not available for the 3G, such as the Bluetooth keyboard, selectable backgrounds and the worst...multi-tasking!  What you can expect, or at least a large number of iPhone 3G users have reported, is a much slower phone with huge delays when trying to open apps and typing, lower (and kind of random) battery life and a feeling of being left out as the features are there but not enabled.  Now, the multi-tasking may be better turned off on the 3G as the CPU may not be able to keep up....but whatever the reasoning the fact is, that these features just are not there and it does not make sense for the other ones I mentioned. So, bottom line, you tried it, your phone now blows, and you want to revert back to IOS 3.1.3...how can you do it?  Follow these instructions and you should be back to normal in no time.Step 1 Plug in your iPhone to the PCNo picture required, otherwise you may want to get someone else to help you here! ;-)Step 2 Download RecBoot For Windows: Click HereFor MAC: Click HereStep 3 Put iPhone into Recovery Mode Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.iPhone Recovery Mode

You will see this:Click the Exit Recovery Mode button. In a few seconds, RecBoot should kick you out of plug-me-into-iTunes recovery mode and you'll boot right into your freshly downgraded 3.1.3.Step 7 Restore your backupNow that you are back to IOS 3.1.3 you can restore your backup from iTunes:

How To: Unlock the Bootloader on Your Google Pixel or Pixel XL

How To: Unlock the Bootloader on Your Google Pixel or Pixel XL
As we reported first here on Gadget Hacks, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL have unlockable bootloaders, with the exception of models purchased from Verizon. This means that once the TWRP custom recovery is installed, you can flash ZIPs and even root your device in a few taps—as long as you unlock the bootloader beforehand.I like to mod my devices, so whenever I get a new phone, the first thing I do is unlock the bootloader—even before I log into my Google account. I do this because unlocking the bootloader wipes the device, so getting it out of the way up front makes sure I don't lose any data. That way, when a working root method becomes available, I'm ready to go.So if you plan on rooting and modding your Pixel or Pixel XL, you might want to get the bootloader unlock process out of the way right now, as it's almost a requirement for root and ROMs. It's fairly simple, but even still, I'll go over the process in great detail to make it as easy as possible to follow along with, and ensure that all of your bases are covered.Don't Miss: PSA: If You're Having Auto-Focus Issues on Your Pixel, It's Probably Your Case's Fault
What You'll NeedWindows, Mac, or Linux computer USB data cable
A Note About Data Loss, Warranties & Android PayBefore you do any of this, you should be aware that the process of unlocking your bootloader will trigger a factory data reset. This is a security measure built into Android to protect your data from thieves, so it's unavoidable. If you're comfortable with that, at least make sure that any important data is backed up beforehand.Aside from that, unlocking your bootloader may void your warranty. However, these effects can be undone by running through this guide again, then replacing the command in Step 5 with "fastboot flashing lock" to re-lock your bootloader if needed. Finally, a new Android security measure called SafetyNet is reportedly being triggered by unlocked bootloaders, which means that some apps, like Android Pay and Pokémon GO, may refuse to run if you unlock your bootloader. You'll also see a screen during boot-up that says "Your device software can't be checked for corruption," but this is normal. To put it simply, proceed at your own risk.
Step 1: Install ADB & Fastboot on Your ComputerFirst up, you'll need to install ADB and Fastboot on your computer so that you can send the bootloader-unlock command to your Pixel or Pixel XL. The instructions for this part will vary depending on your operating system, but we just updated our detailed ADB and Fastboot installation guide with steps you can follow for Windows, Mac, or Linux.Full Guide: Install ADB & Fastboot on Windows, Mac, or Linux

Step 2: Enable 'OEM Unlocking' on Your PixelNext up, you'll need to prepare your Pixel. First things first, enable the hidden "Developer options" menu by heading to About phone in Settings, then tapping the "Build number" entry seven times in rapid succession. For more help with this part, check out our full guide on the subject:Full Guide: Enable 'Developer Options' on Your Android Phone or TabletOnce you've done that, head to the Developer options menu on your Pixel, then make sure to enable the "OEM unlocking" setting. This will allow you to unlock your bootloader using Fastboot commands.

Step 3: Put Your Phone into Bootloader ModeIn order to run the commands that will unlock your bootloader, your phone will need to be in Bootloader Mode. So next, power your Pixel completely off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously. Within a few seconds, you should be greeted by Android's Bootloader menu, which looks like this: Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks When you see this screen, plug your Pixel into your computer using the USB data cable that came with the device. Aside from that, leave the phone alone, as it's time to do some work on the computer side of things.

Step 4: Open an ADB Shell on Your ComputerNext up, navigate to the ADB and Fastboot installation directory on your computer. For Windows users, this can usually be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools. For Mac and Linux users, it depends on where you extracted your ADB folder when you installed the utility. From here, if you're using a Windows PC, hold down the shift button on your keyboard, then right-click any empty space and choose "Open command window here." For Mac and Linux users, simply open a Terminal window, then change directories to the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB installation directory.

Step 5: Unlock Your BootloaderBefore we get into this part, note that I'll be listing the commands for Windows users. Mac users will have to add a period and a slash (./) before each of these commands, and Linux users will have to add a slash (/) to the front. So from the ADB shell, type the following command, then hit enter.fastboot devices If that returns a series of letters and numbers followed by the word "fastboot," then your device is connected properly and you're good to go. Otherwise, refer back to Step 1 to check your ADB and Fastboot installation, and ensure that your Pixel is in Bootloader Mode as shown in Step 3. Next up, it's time to unlock your bootloader. So type the following command, then hit enter.fastboot flashing unlock At this point, you'll see a message on your Pixel asking if you're sure you'd like to unlock the bootloader. Make sure the "Yes" option is highlighted, and if it's not, use your volume keys to do so. From there, press the power button, then your bootloader will unlock and your phone will reboot back into Fastboot mode. This is a Nexus 6P, but it will look exactly the same on your Pixel or Pixel XL. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Once you've done that, press your power button to reboot the device, and disconnect the USB cable. At this point, your bootloader is officially unlocked! You'll have to run through initial setup again, but most of your apps and data should restore automatically, thanks to the Pixel's cloud backup system.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Run the Same App Side by Side in Nougat's Multi-Window Mode
Some manufacturers, like Samsung and LG, have had split-screen multitasking on their custom versions of Android for years. But starting with Android Nougat, Google added this functionality to AOSP, which means that all phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or higher will now have a new multi-window mode. However, there is one disappointing issue: Nougat's split-screen mode won't allow you to run the same app side by side. This feature would be useful for things like copying text between two Google Docs files, or keeping multiple text message threads open simultaneously. You could clone apps yourself for side-by-side use, but that's a relatively clunky option just for multi-window mode.Lucky for us, developer IJP fixed this with a simple non-root app that lets you run two instances of the same app on Android Nougat in one screen.

Step 1: Install Parallel Windows for NougatTo get this trick going, start by installing the app, which is called Parallel Windows for Nougat. Keep in mind, though, this will only work if your phone or tablet is running Android 7.0 or higher, and only with apps that allow split-screening to begin with.Install Parallel Windows for Nougat for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant PermissionsGo ahead and launch the app, at which point it will inform you that it's in its early stages of development, and some bugs are still being ironed out. Nonetheless, it works quite well already, so tick the box next to "I understand" when you see this message, then press "Continue."From here, make sure the switch next to "Permit to draw over other Apps" is enabled (though it should be already), then tap the toggle switch next to the "Enable Accessibility Service" entry. Next, select Parallel Windows for Nougat from the list, then enable the Accessibility service, and press "OK" on the popup. This will ensure that all of the app's main functionality is in working order.

Step 3: Adjust the Trigger AreaWhen you're done granting permissions, you might want to adjust the trigger area for the app's main interface. This is represented by a red rectangle on the side of your screen, though it turns transparent when you've set everything up. So if you'd like, enter custom values into the "Hotspot dimensions" fields—the first is width, the second is height, and both values represent the number of pixels the trigger area will occupy.

Step 4: Run Two Copies of the Same App Side by SideFrom now on, when you'd like to run two instances of the same app in split-screen mode, start by opening the app you'd like to clone. From here, swipe in from the trigger area on the side of your screen, then tap the topmost icon (the other two icons are shortcuts for existing multitasking functionality). At this point, you'll see a list of all your installed apps—simply select the app you want to clone, then it will occupy the top half of your screen. From here, select the same app from your recent apps list on the bottom half of the screen, then you'll be running two instances of one app in Android Nougat's split screen mode. Everything works just like the stock multitasking interface, so you can use both apps simultaneously, and you can exit split-screen mode by long-pressing your recent apps button.Have you found any interesting uses for this new functionality? If so, we'd love to hear about it in the comment section below.Don't Miss: Make Copies of Your Apps to Stay Logged into Multiple Accounts at OnceFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Hack Your Old Phone Line into an Emergency Power Supply for Your Cell Phone

How To: Hack Your Old Phone Line into an Emergency Power Supply for Your Cell Phone

"Ahoy-hoy."If telephone titan Alexander Graham Bell had his way, we'd all be answering phones like Mr. Burns. Thankfully, frienemy Thomas Edison had enough sense to realize we weren't always on the briny. He preferred "hello" as our standard telephone greeting, which he is credited with coining in 1877. Image via staticflickr.com Fellow American pioneer Davy Crockett actually used it as a greeting first in 1833 (as compared to an exclamation)—but in print, not over the phone."Hello" is also the recommended greeting published in the first ever telephone book from 1878 (actually, it was "hulloa," but close enough).Since then, the landline telephone had been our primary method of long distance communication—until now. With the widespread adoption of cell phones in the states, "hello" is the only thing sticking around for the long haul.I can definitely say that this thing is not: No, it's not an Ethernet port that somehow shrank. This not-so-newfangled contraption is called a telephone jack, and if you're like me, you haven't used one in at least a decade or so.You may not even notice them anymore, but if you look around your house or apartment, you've probably got at least one or two of them on your wall. Or, something that looks like this: Now, here comes the interesting part of the story—they are not useless.

Using Old Phone Jacks for SmartphonesWhile a cell phone is incredibly convenient, without a charged battery it's just useless weight. If a storm causes a power outage in the area, I'm not looking for candles and flashlights—I'm figuring out how to charge my iPhone! Image via cultofmac.com There are a few well-known options for charging your smartphone without help from the electric company, including charging cases, car chargers, power inverters, laptops, and more. However, something we all have readily available already is that old landline jack. Corded phones don't need to be plugged into a power outlet; they actually get enough power to operate from the phone line itself. When the power goes out, land lines will still operate on their secondary source of power feeding from the telco. Meanwhile our cell phones will slowly drain and die. With this simple hack, you can put that old relic to good use and convert it into an emergency power supply for your smartphone. Image via instructables.com You'll need a regular USB cable, your cell phone's USB charging cable, an available phone line, a phone cord, a voltage regulator, and a multimeter. The multimeter is used to check the voltage of the jack in question and the voltage regulator keeps the output at 5V. The regulator makes a simple circuit with the phone cord and USB cable to convert the phone signal into power that your phone can use.Check out this video guide by Make to see how it's done. How To: Download Images on Your iPhone When a Site on Safari Won't Let You
Some websites block image downloads on their webpages so you can't save them for reuse. That means long-pressing or force-pressing on protected images in Safari on your iPhone will not do anything or will omit the "Save Image" option. Taking a screenshot is the obvious solution to bypass restrictions, but you won't get the best quality. Thankfully, there's another way.To download seemingly undownloadable images from a webpage onto your iPhone, you'll need a third-party app, and developer Eduardo Rocha just happens to have one you can use. With his free iOS app, you can save blocked background images and embedded photos and graphics. If the image has a URL readily visible in the webpage's source code, it's fair game.Don't Miss: How to Download Instagram Videos on Your iPhone On that note, it's worth mentioning that this tool will not find every image on every website. Some webpages, like parts of Apple's site, hide the image source URL in the code. While these images can still be found very easily in desktop browsers, I've yet to see an iOS app that also finds dynamically loaded content. Tools usually focus on webpages that block the long-press contextual menu or have background designs.

Step 1: Install 'Save Images'Rocha's app is called "Save Images – Downloader for Safari," and it works as a Safari extension. This is the more preferred method versus other apps like "Image Downloader & Viewer" that are browsers themselves. For the "Save Images" app, you can install and tuck away in one of your tools folders, as you'll barely need to open it after you set it up. It requires iOS 8.0 or later.App Store Link: Save Images - Downloader for Safari (free)

Step 2: Configure SettingsOnce it's installed, open the app up to configure its settings, which more or less means you get to include or exclude certain places its hunts for images in. By default, all three of its options will be toggled on, ready to use, but you can toggle any off that you find unhelpful. As for file types, Save Images will find .jpg, .png, .gif, and other popular image formats."img" tags (normal linked-to images) CSS background images (URL images or embedded base64 encoded images) "meta" property="og:image" tag (usually the page' main image) While that seems like a good amount of options, the Safari extension still can't locate images behind iframes, dynamically loaded images, or anything that's not listed above in the webpage's original source code view. As it appears, the app scrapes the webpage without monitoring network requests, which is why some pictures won't show up when trying to save them.

Step 3: Add the Safari ExtensionBefore you can actually use this in Safari, you need to enable its extension. With Safari open on any page, tap the share button in the bottom navigation bar. Swipe right in the bottom activities row until the very end, then tap "More." From the list that opens, scroll down and toggle on "Save Images," then tap "Done." You'll see it in your activities row now, and if you want to move it near the beginning for easier access, you can long-press on the icon and drag it left where you want.More Info: Add, Remove, & Reorder Share Options on Your iPhone

Step 4: Download an Image in SafariNavigate to the webpage in Safari that you want to download images from, and tap on the share button in the bottom navigation bar. Find the "Save Images" icon in the bottom activities row of the share sheet, and tap on it. The extension will automatically show you any image found in the original source code for the webpage, which may include header images, backgrounds, thumbnails, and icons.Tap on an image to enlarge it and view its file extension, resolution, and size. You can long-press the image to copy it to your clipboard, otherwise, tap on "Save" in the top right to download the image quickly to your Photos app. You can also hit the share icon, and tap "Save Image" in the bottom row of activities. In the share sheet, you can also use any of the apps in the top row to share the image right away.

Step 5: Download Images in BulkIf you would like to save all of the images at once, tap on "Select" in the top right of the main view, then on "Select" on the bottom left to select all of the photos. Of course, you can also choose some but not all of the images by checking/unchecking images. Once ready, tap "Save" in the top right, and the images will be saved to the Photos app.Images downloaded will say "Saved" on them, though, only on this screen; If you exit the extension, it will not remember something you saved the next time you use it. And just like that, you've saved a blocked image that you can use for your home screen background, for a witty reply in a text, or for some other innocuous reason.Websites usually block users from saving images to combat copyright infringement, a just cause if there ever was one. So if you plan on using this guide to skirt copyright restrictions for commercial, public, or malicious reuse, don't. To play it safe, you should never use an image you found on the internet unless it's public domain or has a license specifically saying it's okay to use, but that's an article for another time.Don't Miss: This Shortcut Lets You Download YouTube Videos on Your iPhone Straight from the Source, No Shady Services NeededFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

And even if there were a phone without flaw, there are still things that you might want to customize for personal preference. That's why we set out to find the very best tweaks for OnePlus phones, and to make it easier for you to apply them.If you've already rooted your OnePlus 5, 5T, 6, or 6T using Magisk, you've already taken the first step towards a more fulfilling phone. If you haven't, it's not too late. Just start by unlocking your phone's bootloader, then install TWRP custom recovery and use it to flash the Magisk ZIP. Things will get a lot easier from there — installing the Magisk modules below is just as easy as installing an app.
Before We BeginThe tweaks outlined below all require Magisk and root, but thankfully, Magisk itself can root your phone, so you can take care of both requirements in one shot. We've created guides for three of the last four OnePlus devices, and we're working on a OnePlus 6T root/Magisk guide right now, so use the links below to get started if you don't already have Magisk installed.OnePlus 5: Unlock Bootloader | Flash TWRP | Root with Magisk OnePlus 5T: Unlock Bootloader | Flash TWRP | Root with Magisk OnePlus 6: Unlock Bootloader | Flash TWRP | Root with Magisk OnePlus 6T: Coming Soon

1. Ainur AudioAudio has not been a trophy piece for OnePlus, which is why we want to make it better. In addition to general audio optimization and tuning, Ainur Sauron offers specific OnePlus speaker amps patches and additions in its Advanced features. The team that developed Ainur Sauron used a hex disassembler to make associations between the functions of various files and systems, resulting in a better understanding of how to manipulate the files to produce the best sound possible. These studies and experimentation led to the creation of Ainur Sauron, AKA Ainur Audio (which to me, mostly just sounds clearer than stock).Installing the Ainur Sauron module is easy if you have Magisk Manager. You can find the module via search in Downloads. Once installed, the module places the sauron useroptions file in the root of the internal storage. You can use a file manager to conduct your own experiments with the sauron useroptions file, but otherwise there really is no interface. Ainur Sauron modifies the entire SoundFX library, and is still compatible with other sound modules like Viper4Android in most cases, but may require a patch in certain instances.

2. Camera Mod MWhile the Camera Mod M requires an external zip download, you can then install the mod in Magisk Manager. Before you install, you will need to disable, then re-enable your stock Camera app to revert any changes and uninstall updates. The reason this is necessary is because the OnePlus Camera M Mod only works with the original version of the phone's camera. The process is still quick and easy, with the result being a tangible improvement in photo quality.More Info: Boost Camera Resolution & Photo Quality on Your OnePlus 5 or 5T Be warned that with the increase in resolution comes an increase in the storage space these pictures require. This trade-off exists because it's the compression method the stock camera uses that causes photos to look a little washed out. Definition is adapted before the picture fully process to prevent this watercolor effect. You'll gain a new option to adjust sharpness in Settings. (1) Before Mod M, (2) After Mod M

3. Greenify4MagiskThere's no shame in OnePlus' battery game, but do you know anyone that would turn down some extra battery life on their device? This Magisk module provides fast and efficient hibernation of apps that otherwise sit in the background and drain your battery unnecessarily. Greenify's "Boost Mode" was also revived through Xposed, but Magisk might be the better option if you don't want to break SafetyNet.The Magisk mod adds Greenify as a privileged app, resulting in some powerful changes. It's like Android's Doze feature, but far more effective. To install it, just search "Greenify" in the Magisk Manager app under Downloads, then tap the download arrow. From there, reboot and open the Greenify app, then be sure to grant it superuser rights. After that, you can allow Greenify to analyze your apps, or create a shortcut for hibernation.

4. HEVC+SM GC RecordingHEVC stands for High Efficiency Video Codec. This mod can help your OnePlus device with video recordings that are at 720p, 1080p, and/or 4K resolutions. It replaces the media profiles.xml file located at /system/etc/ to enable HEVC. Not only are the recordings better quality, but your phone also shouldn't get as hot. You'll also fix the problem of crashing during slow motion playback by installing "HEVC+SM GC Recording" from the Magisk Manager app under Downloads. There is another, similar mod, called "HEVC/H.265," but it doesn't work on Oreo and this one does. Even so and as always, before attempting any mod, it's not a bad idea to create a backup just in case something goes wrong. A reboot is mandatory after installation.

5. Pix3lifyThe Google Pixel 3 is out. Have you wondered what it would be like to take it for a test drive? Well, the "Pix3lify" module is a much cheaper way to get an idea of what the Pixel 3 is like, rather than buying one. The module includes the blue Pixel accent theme, the Action Services app, AR Core/AR Stickers stubs, Daydream VR support, Device Health Services app, Digital Wellbeing app for Pie, Pixel alarms, ringtones, UI sounds, media, Google Dialer support, and Google Sound Picker app for Pie.It also enables the following: Camera2 API support (to be used in conjunction with a modded Google Camera app), Google Assistant, Google Lens, Google Live Earth, Live Data, and Pixel-exclusive wallpapers. You can flash from Magisk Manager or TWRP. Pix3lify is only available if you are running Android Nougat or greater. After an install and reboot, your OnePlus 5 will morph into a Google Pixel 3 — at least to some extent.

6. CloudFlareDNS4MagiskThis module allows your OnePlus to use CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 DNS servers instead of the server your carrier or access point provides. This is a feature baked into Android Pie, which some OnePlus phones have already received. But if yours is still on Nougat or Oreo, you'll stand to gain some privacy by installing "CloudFareDNS4Magisk" from the Downloads section in your Magisk Manager app.The advantage in doing so is enhanced privacy and a faster internet speed than what most ISPs offer. True, you could do this with CloudFare's VPN app, but then you'd lose ad blocking and other features if you're already using a different VPN service. If you're concerned about your browsing history being saved on a stranger's computer, (because — let's face it, that's what a server is: a stranger's computer) this mod can put your mind at ease. CloudFlare doesn't save your browsing history to its servers.CloudFlare also supports DNS-over-HTTPS (HyperText Transport Protocol Secure) and DNS-over-TLS (Transport Layer Security) for greater privacy. Note that your internet provider does have the ability to block requests if you use a custom DNS address. There's not a whole lot that can be done your carrier does. But, if they don't, you can spoil yourself with secure DNS via an easy install with Magisk.

7. Call Recording for OOSSometimes I think I need call recording; not so much to set up a trap, but to remind my husband that he did say that, or that I did remind him that something was happening. OnePlus phones have the inherent ability to record calls, but it's been disabled in most regions. The reason behind this is it's illegal to record someone without their consent in some locations, so you might want to check out the local laws, or let the other person know they are on a recorded line. There are actually a few ways to turn on this feature, but most involve root. If you are already rooted, an easy way is to install this mod via Magisk Manager. The Magisk Module only changes the necessary setting to enable call recording; not the entire region of your OnePlus device, as some methods do. Upon installation, you'll suddenly have a record button in your call interface.Don't Miss: Enable Call Recording on OnePlus Devices in the Stock Phone App

8. iOS 12.1 Emoji ModDid you switch devices and find yourself missing your iOS emojis? You can have your old iOS emojis, and the new ones from iOS 12.1 too, kind of like having your cake and eating it, too. (What else do you do with cake anyway?) The mod adjusts the system font configuration to load the font pack first, compensating for unicode compatibility issues. It's been tested on older OOS and Magisk versions and on OnePlus X.More Info: Get iOS 12.1's New Emojis on Any Android Phone Here's what you can do to prevent compatibility issues: clear the data of your keyboard app. This is necessary to enable all emoji fonts in your keyboard app. Also ensure that the keyboard app you are using, such as GBoard, supports unicode 11 emojis. The mod itself is available within Magisk Manager. Before I go, let me say there's no right or wrong way to customize your own phone, but if you do experience problems after installing multiple mods, the best thing to do is to first uninstall the mod(s) causing the issues, (if needed) uninstall Magisk Manager, or (worst case scenario) wipe your phone from TWRP. OnePlus devices tend to be some of the most customization-friendly phones out there, and using Magisk's systemless tweaks reduces the risk and fallout of problems, but you might not want to try this on your work phone.Don't Miss: The Best Phones for Rooting & ModdingFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: The 12 Best Android Widgets for Getting Things Done
For people that like to get things done, Android's home screen widgets are almost indispensable. Rather than packing your launcher with a bunch of icons, you can utilize widgets to get quick information in a beautiful package or provide one-tap access to a particular functionality within your apps. Most widgets you'll find through a quick search will be for controlling music or viewing weather, but these are obviously in abundance, which means you shouldn't have any trouble finding one you like. So instead, I'll cover some of the best widgets that focus mainly on getting stuff done, and hopefully, your productivity levels will skyrocket as a result.Don't Miss: 6 Unique Launchers to Replace Your Boring Home Screen

#1: Event Flow - CalendarsEvent Flow is a highly customizable calendar widget that hooks into your existing Android system calendar to display upcoming events in one of two formats: Either a schedule view that shows your next appointments, or a month view that gives you 30+ days at a time. There are eight themes available, and each preset can be customized even further with a robust set of options, so you can get a nice look going with your easy-to-view schedule. You can unlock all themes and configurations with an in-app purchase of $0.99.Install Event Flow for free from the Google Play Store Event Flow Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 3x3 (agenda or month view) Theme Options: 8 themes with customizable options Price to Unlock All Features: $0.99

#2: Power Toggles - System SettingsWith over 5 million installs, Power Toggles is definitely a fan favorite. This widget is about as powerful as it gets, considering that you can adjust almost any system setting at the tap of a button, and even assign long-press actions to each of your toggles. There are two widgets available — a 1x1 folder and a 4x1 strip — and the former is highly customizable with a wide array of theming options. If you like to keep a tight rein on battery-draining settings like GPS and account sync, then Power Toggles is the way to go.Install Power Toggles for free from the Google Play Store Power Toggles Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 4x1, 1x1 (Folder) Theme Options: 9 colors, background transparency, and more Price to Unlock All Features: Free

The base app will only cost you $0.99, but there are a few external theme packages that you can purchase through the app.To give you a few examples of what HD Widgets can do, it has over a dozen widget sizes that can each be configured to show different information. There are options for time, date, system indicators, toggle switches, and even custom weather data, and each of these bits of information can be assigned to launch any app of your choosing when you tap them. In all, it's one of the most robust widgets available, which makes it my personal favorite.Install HD Widgets for $0.99 from the Google Play Store HD Widgets Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x1, 1x2, 1x4, 2x1, 2x2, 3x5, 4x1, 4x2, and more Theme Options: Dozens of layouts, colors, and more Price to Unlock All Features: $0.99

#4: Zooper Widget - General InformationZooper Widget is similar to HD Widgets because of its all-in-one appeal, but there's more of a learning curve with this one. If you're willing to get past that, however, you'll be rewarded with what's likely the most customizable widget system available for Android, period. The free version of Zooper has plenty of options, but we'd recommend getting Zooper Pro for $2.99. Once you've done that, there are plenty of Zooper themes that you can install from the Play Store, and though many have a minimalistic text-based style, you can adjust virtually every aspect of the interface to fit your tastes.Install Zooper Widget for free from the Google Play Store Zooper Widget Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x5, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 3x2, and more Theme Options: Virtually endless Price to Unlock All Features: $2.99

#5: Time It - Time KeeperIf you want to keep track of the time you spend on different activities throughout your day, Time It is the way to go. There are three different widget sizes, though the largest one requires the pro version of Time It, which will run you $1.49.Each widget comes with adjustable transparency, but they all offer the same basic functionality — simply tap the play/pause button to start timing an activity, then tap it again to stop. Once you've done that, the main app will pop up, where you can categorize and save your activity for future viewing.Install Time It for free from the Google Play Store Time It Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x1, 2x1, 3x3 (pro only) Theme Options: Transparency only Price to Unlock All Features: $1.49

#6: More Shortcuts - App ActivitiesThe different screens, menus, and actions that can be performed within an app are called activities. An app called More Shortcuts will let you create quick links to these activities and place a custom icon on your home screen, which lets you jump straight to the exact thing you wanted to do in an app. There's only one widget offered by More Shortcuts, but it's about as useful as it gets. Just add it to your home screen, then pick any action — this could range from writing a new email to toggling your phone's flashlight on and off. Once you've done that, you can choose a name for the shortcut and repeat the process all over again if you'd like to add more direct links to your favorite app activities.Install More Shortcuts for free from the Google Play Store More Shortcuts Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x1 Theme Options: Custom Labels Price to Unlock All Features: Free

#7: Volume Control + - Volume LevelsOver the years, Android's volume menu has seen several redesigns, but not all of these have been welcome changes. So depending on your Android version, you may want an easier way to adjust volume levels, and that's where Volume Control + comes into play.A free version of this app is available, but to use the handy home screen widgets, you'll need to purchase the pro version for $2.99. You get to pick and choose which system volume levels you want to control, and all volumes can be adjusted by tapping the plus or minus icons on the widget. You can even tap the icon itself to quickly mute a particular volume level, and three different themes are available.Install Volume Control + for $2.99 from the Google Play Store Slider Widget Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x1, 4x1 Theme Options: Light, Dark, or Transparent Price to Unlock All Features: $2.99

#8: Data Status - Mobile Data UsageData Status is a Gadget Hacks favorite, considering that we've covered it in the past. The reason we like this app is that it makes it easy to see when you're running the risk of exceeding your monthly mobile data limit, and it does it with style. The widgets offered by Data Status are just as useful as the main app since they give you detailed information about your data usage right on your home screen, and there are three color options to choose from. The app is free to use for a month — if you like it, it's only a dollar to use it for life.Install Data Status for free from the Google Play Store Data Status Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 3x2 Theme Options: Blue, Black, or Purple Price to Unlock All Features: $0.99

#9: Google Keep - Notes & To-Do ListsGoogle Keep is an invaluable tool for making notes, creating reminders, checking off to-do lists, and much more. Your creations sync across all of your devices, so it's a perfect cross-platform app — but on Android, widgets make it an even better experience. With the 3x2 widget, you can opt to only show particular types of notes, which are fully interactive even when they're on your home screen. Then, with the 3x1 widget, you'll get instant access to creating new notes, checklists, reminders, or anything else that you'd normally save in Keep.Install Google Keep for free from the Google Play Store Google Keep Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 3x1 or 3x2 Theme Options: Display Custom Categories Price to Unlock All Features: Free

#10: Contextual App Folder - Apps When You Need ThemThis next app is a widget, but it's disguised as a regular home screen folder. That's because it uses cues like your current location or the time of day to only display the most relevant apps for what you're doing right now. After setting up a default folder, you can select triggers like when you connect to a certain Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth device. When one of these trigger events occurs, the contents of your home screen folder will change to display the right apps at the right time. It may sound complicated, but it's really not — plus, we've got a full setup guide for you right here.Install Contextual App Folder for free from the Google Play Store Redditastic Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 1x1 (folder) Theme Options: None Price to Unlock All Features: Free

SeriesGuide is almost unquestionably the best Android app for tracking shows, and it has an awesome widget to match.Once you've added your favorite shows to the main app, the widget will list all upcoming episodes so you don't miss out. When you tap one of these episodes, you'll be taken to the overview page, where there's lots of useful information. To unlock additional widgets, themes, and more, you can pay $1.99/year or a one-time fee of $5.49, though most users will be fine with the free version.Install SeriesGuide for free from the Google Play Store SeriesGuide Quick FactsAvailable Widgets: 4x2 Theme Options: Light, Dark, or SeriesGuide Dark Price to Unlock All Features: $2.49/year or $5.49/life
