How To: Watch the Google Event on Replay Pixel 2, Google Home Mini, Pixelbook & More
Update 10/12: Since the event has now ended, we figured we'd update this page with a link to a replay version of the Google event. So if you missed any of the goodies or just want to give yourself a refresher, jump down to the "Where to Watch" section below. If you're a Google fan, October 4th is like Christmas. Unlike Apple, who hosts a few hardware events throughout the year, Google puts it all out there on one glorious day. Last year, we saw the first-ever "Made by Google" phones in the Pixel and Pixel XL, met the Google Assistant, and caught a glimpse of the Google Home. But this year, we're expecting so much more. Now that Google is officially a hardware company, lots of exciting tech is coming out of Mountain View. We're expecting the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, a budget-friendly Google Home Mini (and maybe even a premium Google Home Max), a Pixelbook laptop, an updated Daydream View VR headset, and our first real look at Google Lens. Like I said, it's a huge deal, so you'll definitely want to be watching.Don't Miss: Pixel 2 Rumor Roundup — All of the Latest Info on Google's Next Flagship Phones
When to WatchThe event kicks off on Wednesday, October 4th at 9 a.m. Pacific Time, and if history is any indication, it should last about an hour and a half, all told. Just to be safe, try to set aside two full hours to make sure you catch the whole thing. If you're not on the west coast, that works out to 12 noon Eastern Time, 11 a.m. Central Time, or 10 a.m. Mountain Time. For any readers that aren't in the States, the event will start at 4 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time.
Where to WatchNow where do you watch this awesome event? Right here, of course! Just click play on the embedded video below and you'll be watching the live stream right away. Even if you're late to the party, you can still watch a replay of the event using the same embedded video.
What are you most excited about for the 2017 #MadeByGoogle event? Since we already know about most of the hardware, I'm personally pumped to learn about any new software magic that Google may have up its sleeve. How about you? Let us know in the comment section below.Don't Miss: Why Google's HTC Purchase is Nothing Like the Motorola OrdealFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: 5 Android P Features the Galaxy S9 Already Has

News: 5 Android P Features the Galaxy S9 Already Has
Over the past week, we've had a number of important launches take place in the Android community. Samsung is in the middle of their rollout of the Galaxy S9, with preorders in the US shipping this week. Google also rolled out the first Android P developer preview last week. While these may seem unrelated, there are actually a number of Android P features inspired by Samsung software.Google has been known to take design cues for stock Android from other OEMs. With the latest developer preview of Android P, the Samsung influence is clearly present. The settings menu has seen an overhaul to a more colorful layout. Stock Android now features a screenshot editing tool called Markup. The ambient display and volume controls also gain some useful features. All of these have been prominently featured on Samsung's UI for years now.

1. Colorful Settings MenuAndroid Oreo featured a very flat and minimalist Settings menu. With Android P, Google decided to head in a brighter direction. Each of the individual setting tiles now features its own color. While this is a small change, it's easy to see that it was inspired by the Samsung Experience UI. On the Galaxy S9 running Samsung Experience 9.0, the Settings menu is also colored. Arguably, Samsung's looks a bit cleaner and more understated than the implementation seen in Android P. (1) Pixel 2 XL Oreo. (2) Pixel 2 XL Android P. (3) Galaxy S9 Oreo.

2. Battery Percentage on Ambient DisplayWhen Samsung introduced the Always on Display with the Galaxy S7, they added several pieces of useful information to your perpetual lock screen. Perhaps the most important is the remaining battery percentage. With Android P, Google brings this useful feature to stock Android. This one seems like a no-brainer, but again, Samsung was the first to implement this idea on a grand scale.

3. Screenshot EditorSharing screenshots has been a priority for Samsung since the introduction of their Galaxy Note lineup. The ability to save screenshots and mark them up with annotations became an integral part of their UI. Android P introduces a very similar feature in the form of the new Markup app. When saving a screenshot in Android P, you can now tap on the Edit option to open up the Markup screenshot editor.Within the app, you can choose from the pen or highlighter to doodle on and annotate your screenshot. When you complete your markup, you can save the screenshot to your device storage. If you want to install the Markup app, you can actually get it on any Android phone right now! (1) Markup Editor on Android P. (2) Accessing Markup. (3) Samsung's More Robust Editor. While the Markup app is a nice tool, it does not offer the advanced functionality available in Samsung's own screenshot editor. The editor on the Galaxy S9 has a robust selection of pens, pencils, and brushes to use when annotating your screenshot. In addition to a wider selection of markup tools, Samsung also offers the ability to precisely crop your photo and subsequently share it to any social media platform.

4. Control Media Volume by DefaultThe functionality of the volume buttons on a phone has typically been fairly straightforward. Pressing the volume up button turns the ringer volume up. Pressing the volume down button turns the ringer volume down. However, in the age of YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming services, it makes more sense for those buttons to control media volume. Samsung started offering this option last year with their Oreo Beta, giving users the choice to control either ringer or media volume using the hardware buttons. (1) Media volume is the default control in Android P. (2) User choice for volume control on Galaxy S9. Google decided in Android P that media volume should be the default option controlled by the hardware keys. While this makes sense, it seems better to give users the option as to which they want to control — though it is worth noting that you can toggle your ringer on and off from Android P's default volume UI.

5. Android P Pixel Launcher (Installable as an APK)By now, we have seen that Samsung Experience 9.0 already has a number of features included in Android P. On the other hand, many people are not a fan of the launcher included with Samsung phones. Thankfully, you can install the Pixel launcher included with the Android P developer preview. Even better, we have a quick guide that will walk you through the entire process. (1) Galaxy S9 running Android P Pixel Launcher. (2) S9 App drawer running Android P Pixel Launcher. Samsung often faces complaints for slow Android platform updates on their flagship phones. While some of this criticism is deserved for security reasons, many of the fancy features in Android P are already available on the Galaxy S9. Everyone will always have their favorite version of Android, whether it be skinned or stock, weigh in with your thoughts in the comments!Don't Miss: 16 Cool New Features & Changes in Android PFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: iOS 11.3 Beta 4 Released for iPhone with Under-the-Hood Improvements

The fourth beta for iOS 11.3 was released by Apple to developers and public beta testers on Monday, March 5. The update comes just under two weeks after the company released beta 3 on Feb. 20, which mostly added bug and stability patches. It appears that beta 4 is much of the same, but we'll learn more as we sink our teeth into it.You can download the newest beta version right now if you're a developer or public beta tester with a valid configuration profile. Just go to "General" in your Settings app, then tap on "Software Update." Next, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install iOS 11.3 beta 4 onto your iPhone.UPDATE: iOS 11.3 Beta 5 Released for iPhone The only big thing that we've noticed is that the release notes state that "Devices should now be recognized by the host computer after updating a device to iOS 11.3 beta 4 and later," which the last beta broke. Also, while previous iOS 11.3 betas changed "iBooks" to just "Books," this fourth beta has changed it back to "iBooks." Seems Apple can't figure out what it should be called. And 9to5Mac spotted that the TV app might be coming to Brazil soon since Brazilian Portuguese was never included as a supported language before, and now it is.iOS 11.3 is a major step for iOS 11, bringing Message on iCloud, a batch of new Animoji, the ability to import health records to the Health app, and additional battery information and controls, among other features.Don't Miss: 20 Cool New Features in iOS 11.3 For iPhone While under-the-hood improvements aren't the most exciting news, Apple desperately needs them. iOS 11 has been plagued with reports of bugs and glitches, ranging from annoying to downright debilitating. How To: Add an Emergency Medical Card to Your iPhone's Lock Screen with Important Health Information for First Responders

How To: Add an Emergency Medical Card to Your iPhone's Lock Screen with Important Health Information for First Responders
You can't predict the future, but you can prepare for it. In the off chance you get hurt in a car accident, take a nasty tumble, fall down a cliff, have a seizure, or get struck by lightning, it's always good to carry up-to-date information about your health in case you can't speak for yourself. A physical medical ID wallet card or bracelet can provide this information, but so can your iPhone. The secret to this feature can be found in Apple's Health app in iOS 12, a great tool for keeping track of exercise stats, nutrition data, sleep activity, and more. In the Health app, you can set up a Medical ID on-screen "card" consisting of your most important health information that can help out first responders, nurses, doctors, and caregivers, as well as coworkers, family, friends, and even strangers.Don't Miss: 18 Tips for Making the Most of Your iPhone's Health App

Step 1: Create Your Emergency Medical IDWhile the feature has been available in the Health app since iOS 8, it's best to make sure you're running the newest iOS version possible, so update your iPhone if need be. Then, in the Health app, tap the "Medical ID" tab in the bottom right. On the following page, tap "Create Medical ID." If you already have one, tap "Edit" to make some changes, if necessary. Note that you can also access the "Create Medical ID" and "Edit Medical ID" options under your own contact card from the Contacts or Phone app. You just need to pick your name, choose "Edit," then look for it at the bottom.

Step 2: Add Health Facts That Could Help in an EmergencyOnce the editor is open, begin filling out information such as your full name, birthdate, medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type — anything that is relevant to your health. Put own anything that could help in saving your life or making medical treatment smoother in an unforeseen health predicament. For instance, if you're in an ambulance for an abnormally fast heart rate and get queasy, they may give you Phenergan to treat nausea. If you're allergic and can't speak to tell them, you could end up with idiosyncratic reactions that impair your mental and physical ability, which could complicate the whole reason you're there. Adding a reaction or allergy here can decrease the odds of this happening. On Amazon: Dynotag Web-Enabled Smart Medical ID & Emergency Contact Information Card Kit

Step 3: Choose Your Emergency ContactsAside from your health data, you can even tap "add emergency contact" to do just that; Choose a contact from the list, the best phone number, then establish your relationship to that contact. That way, if you end up in a hospital or someone finds you walking around confused, they can contact your emergency contact to notify them or find out what to do.

Step 4: Save with Lock Screen AccessBefore tapping "Done" to complete your Medical ID, make sure that "Show When Locked" is enabled at the top of this page under Emergency Access. This way, anyone that needs access to your information can bring up your Medical ID through your iPhone's lock screen (see next section).None of the information entered in the Medical ID section is included in your Health Data tab in Apple Health or shared with any other apps, third-party or Apple-owned.

Step 5: Access Medical ID from the Lock ScreenIf you lock your iPhone, then wake it up, you won't find your new Medical ID on the lock screen. So what gives?Apple doesn't place Medical IDs directly on the lock screen in iOS. Rather, your ID can be found in the lock screen's emergency call page. Get yourself to the passcode screen, tap "Emergency," then tap on "Medical ID." Your new Medical ID will appear with all the information you saved.Medical ID comes in handy if you're able to move and think clearly but can't speak for some reason. Just pull up the Medical ID real quick and show it to whoever is treating you. However, this Medical ID is most useful to other people. When you're unconscious, delirious, mentally unstable, or otherwise incapacitated, whoever is treating you or trying to find out information about you (like a contact) can pull up this data. But they might not know they can do this, and the only way they will is if you help spread the word right now.
Erasing Your Medical ID (If Necessary)If you need to delete the Medical ID for any reason, whether someone is borrowing your iPhone or it's now your significant other's — or whatever else the case may be — open up the "Medical ID" tab in Health. Tap "Edit," then "Delete Medical ID" at the bottom of the page. How To: Add Widgets Directly to Your iPhone's Home Screen

How To: Add Widgets Directly to Your iPhone's Home Screen
Although widgets were finally introduced in iOS 8, they weren't exactly the widgets we were expecting, i.e., the ones seen on Android home screens. Don't get me wrong, they're still very useful in the Notification Center, since they can be accessed with a quick pull-down from any screen, but there are some widgets that would work better right on the home screen.Well, as long as you have a jailbroken iOS 8 device, you can add widgets to the home screen on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. In this guide, I'll show you how to do it, while highlighting a very cool, transparent weather widget. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install iWidgetsHead over to your Cydia app to search for and install iWidgets by developer Eldwin in the ModMyi repo. This free tweak enables the ability to place widgets on the home screen of your device. Make sure to restart your springboard, if necessary, before trying to add any widgets. Although version 1.1.2 works flawlessly for me, there are newer versions of this tweak that have enhanced iOS 8 support , but they'll have to be manually installed, which isn't very difficult to do. Grab the latest version on your computer to get started, then follow our installation guide for the how-to.

Step 2: Apply WidgetsIn order to apply a widget to the home screen, just touch and hold on an empty area; after a second, the iWidgets page will appear. iWidgets comes with two widgets by default, AnalogClock and Calendar, so just tap on one to apply it.To move your widget around, just tap and hold on it to enter editing mode like you would an application. Unfortunately you can't resize the widgets, but you can place them anywhere you'd like.

A Better Weather WidgetThe default widgets provided by iWidgets are a little underwhelming, so let's show you a great-looking weather widget you can try out. Head into Cydia once more to install Stripe from developer __ifox__. Restart your springboard if necessary. Now just touch and hold on your home screen again to apply it. Before actually applying the widget, you'll be given some options to help customize it, including a WOEID number, which will help provide accurate weather information. If you don't like Stripe or the default iWidget widgets, there are plenty more by other devs that are compatible. Just search for "iWidget" in Cydia to see some other options, and if you find a really cool one, make sure to share it with us!

The ability to choose which widgets appear on your iPhone was introduced with iOS 9 and expanded upon in the subsequent releases of iOS 10 and 11. In this article, I'll show you how to add and remove widgets on an iPhone so you only receive widget information from your favorite apps.

2018 Gift Guide: The Best Android Accessories to Buy for the Techy Person in Your Life

2018 Gift Guide: The Best Android Accessories to Buy for the Techy Person in Your Life
Need a unique gift idea for the techy person in your life? Look no further than that phone they always have in their hand. There are plenty of great accessories, apps, subscriptions, and other smartphone-related goodies that will improve their quality of life, and thoughtful gifts like that are always the best-received.If your friend or loved one is an Android user, it's not quite as easy to buy them phone-related gifts as it would be for an iOS user. Apple accessories work for almost any iPhone, but with the sheer variety of Android devices, there's not always a one-size-fits-all solution. But don't let that steer you away — there are plenty of nifty gadgets that any Android user would appreciate as a gift this holiday season.Jump to a section: Phones | Apps & Games | Subscriptions | TV Accessories | Gaming Accessories | Speakers | Headphones | Dongles | Chargers | Photography

1: PhonesBefore we get into the accessories, if the person you're buying for is using an older phone, the best present you could get them is obviously a new one. Of course, this isn't realistic if you're on a budget, but if they're a close family member and you share a cellular plan, you could always finance a new phone on their behalf. If we limit the choices to Android devices, a few stand out as the absolute best phones on the market right now. The OnePlus 6T has beastly performance, the Pixel 3 is great for photographers, the Galaxy Note 9 is ideal for multitaskers, and the Galaxy S9 is a perfect all-around device.Buy OnePlus 6T from $549 ( T-Mobile | OnePlus) Buy Pixel 3 from $799 (Best Buy | Google | Project Fi) Buy Pixel 3 XL from $899 (Best Buy | Google | Project Fi) Buy Galaxy Note 9 from $999 (Amazon | Best Buy | Samsung | Walmart) Buy Galaxy S9 from $719 (Amazon | Best Buy | Samsung | Walmart) Buy Galaxy S9+ from $839 (Amazon | Best Buy | Samsung | Walmart) The Google Pixel 3 XL. 2: Apps & GamesIf this person is close to you — say, an immediate family member — you probably have a good idea of the type of apps and games they like. Many of the top games and several high-quality apps require an up-front purchase, though, and this is where you can swoop in and be the hero. It's not quite as easy as buying an app for an iPhone user, but there are ways to gift apps and games to someone else that uses Android. You can either set up a Google Play Family Library and buy the app or game for them, or you can shoot them Google Pay cash over Gmail. If none of that works for you, you can even snag a digital or physical Google Play gift card that they can use to buy apps and games. To learn more about how all of these methods work, check out our full guide below:Don't Miss: How to Gift Apps & Games to Android Users

3: SubscriptionsThese days, to get the most out of a mobile device, you almost have to pay for a subscription or two. A person might really want one of these, but think they're too frivolous to put money into since they're smartphone-related and these types of expenses didn't exist a decade ago. But that's where a friend or loved one (you, the generous reader) comes into play — if someone else buys it, they don't have to feel guilty about enjoying it, right? For Android users, Google services are some of the best options in this category. After all, Google makes Android (in case you didn't know, Google is to Android like Microsoft is to Windows):YouTube TV - Google's streaming cable service - $40/month Google Play Music - Android's default music service - $9.99/month YouTube Premium - Ad-free YouTube with exclusive content - $9.99/month Google One - Extra Google Drive storage - from $1.99/month Instead of outright buying them a subscription, which is actually kinda tricky in most of the above examples, the best way to do this would be to get the subscription with your own Google account, then add them to your Google Play Family Library, which will automatically grant them access to the subscription you purchased. Note that this doesn't work with Google One, however. But to see how it's done, check out our full guide below:Don't Miss: How to Set Up a Google Play Family Library to Share Subscriptions Aside from just Google services, there's a section on the Play Store that lists all of the top subscriptions among Android users — check it out! 4: TV AccessoriesNow we'll start getting into the more traditional accessories. Simple, physical items that can enhance the overall experience for any Android user. To start, let's talk about TV accessories.Apple TV would be an obvious choice for an iPhone user since many of their purchases would carry over and they can always mirror their phone's content over to the big screen using AirPlay. This obviously wouldn't work for the Android user in your life, but thankfully, there's a perfect analogue: Android TV.Android TV comes in many forms, including entire TVs with the software baked in. But when it comes to gift ideas, the best Android TV solution is the standalone set-top box. Anyone can attach one of these to their existing TV and get features like the ability to mirror their phone's screen to the TV using Chromecast, access to all of their Google Play Movies & TV purchases, and purchases they've made on their phone will often carry over. The absolute best Android TV box is the Nvidia Shield TV, but it's a bit pricey, so I'll also link the best cost-effective option.Nvidia Shield TV - MSRP $199 (Amazon | Best Buy | Walmart) Xiaomi Mi Box S - MSRP $59 (Walmart) If those options are still too pricey, there's the tried-and-true Chromecast. This device doesn't let you install apps or games, so your purchases don't carry over in that regard. But it does let you mirror an Android phone's display and send content from most popular media apps over to your TV.Chromecast 2018 (1080p) - MSRP $35 (Best Buy | Walmart) Chromecast Ultra (4K) - MSRP $ (Best Buy | Walmart) If you're interested, we made a separate gift guide showcasing many other TV-related accessories for smartphone users. Check it out at the link below:Don't Miss: 2018 Gift Guide: The Best Phone Accessories for Movie & TV Lovers Image by Jonathan Morrison/YouTube

5: Gaming AccessoriesIf the person you're buying for is a gamer, there are plenty of great accessories for Android phones. Let's start with controllers, which can be attached to the user's phone to add physical, tactile buttons which offer far more precision compared to borderless touchscreen controls.SteelSeries Stratus XL Bluetooth Controller - MSRP $59.99 (Amazon | Walmart) 8bitdo SN30 Bluetooth Controller - MSRP $29.99 (Amazon | Walmart) GameSir G4 Bluetooth Wireless Controller - from $37.99 (Amazon | Walmart) iPega PG-9087 Bluetooth Gamepad - from $32.99 (Amazon | Walmart) The iPega 9087 in action. Image by Izzy Nobre/Youtube Then there are physical, real-world games that leverage features like GPS, Wi-Fi, and augmented reality in Android smartphones to create a completely different gaming experience. For instance, the Recoil Laser Combat kit that turns your phone into an accessory for laser tag, or the selection of RC vehicles that have wireless cameras that you can view on your smartphone while flying or driving.Recoil Laser CombatStarter Set (Pistols) - from $29.99 (Amazon | Walmart) Recoil Laser Combat Major Striker Edition (Rifles) - from $114.00 (Amazon) Recoil Laser Combat Fragmentation Grenade - from $11.47 (Amazon | Walmart) FAO Schwarz RC Italia Racer - MSRP $99.95 (Amazon) Air Hogs FPV High Speed Race Car - from $39.75 (Amazon | Walmart) Full Immersion Video Drone - MSRP $99.95 (Amazon | Hammacher Schlemmer) Air Hogs DR1 FPV Race Drone - from $89.99 (Amazon | Walmart) Advertisement for Recoil. Image by GameStop TV/YouTube If you're not really feeling any of the above gift ideas, but you know the person you're buying for is an avid mobile gamer, we have plenty more gift ideas for gamers at the following link:Don't Miss: 2018 Gift Guide: Must-Have Smartphone Accessories for Gamers

6: SpeakersSpeakers are a great accessory for smartphone users, and recently, they've gotten even better with the advent of the smart speaker. For Android users, Alexa is okay, but you really can't beat Google Assistant-enabled speakers if you're in the ecosystem. These devices, such as Google Home, house the same exact digital assistant that comes included in every Android phone, so all of your recipient's attached services will carry right over. There are even a few options with screens nowadays, and the best part is there's one for every budget.Google Home Mini - MSRP $49 (Best Buy | Google) Google Home - MSRP $129 (Best Buy | Google) Google Home Max - MSRP $399 (Best Buy | Google) Google Home Hub - MSRP $149 (Best Buy | Google) JBL Link 10 - MSRP $149 (Best Buy | Walmart) JBL Link 20 - MSRP $199 (Best Buy | Walmart) JBL Link 300 - MSRP $299 (Best Buy | Walmart) JBL Link 500 - MSRP $449 (Best Buy | Walmart) JBL Link View - MSRP $249 (Best Buy | Walmart) Lenovo Smart Display 8" - MSRP $199 (Best Buy | Walmart) Lenovo Smart Display 10" - MSRP $249 (Best Buy | Walmart) The Google Home Mini. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks If smart speakers don't feel right, you can still give that Android user in your life a better way to listen to music and watch movies on their phone if you buy them a Bluetooth speaker. They can simply pair their phone to one of these, then the tinny sound from their phone will instantly turn into a nice, booming audio experience.UE Boom 3 - $129.99 (Amazon) Sony SRS-XB41 - $198 (Amazon) Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless Speaker - $699.97 (Amazon) Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless Speaker. Image by Digital Trends/YouTube

7: HeadphonesA super-easy gift idea for any music lover in your life is a nice pair of headphones. Not only will one of these options work for their smartphone, but they can even use them with other devices. First, however, you should find out if their phone has a traditional 3.5 mm headphone jack. You can check our phone comparison tool to see which models include this port — just look for the "3.5mm Headphone Jack" row in the Audio section to see if their phone has one.If their phone doesn't have a headphone jack, or if you're simply unsure, the best option would be a pair of Bluetooth headphones. A key aspect to look out for is whether or not the headphones support the latest Hi-Fi codecs added to Android, which will improve audio quality (an area that Bluetooth has received much criticism over). These next few headphones are the best of the best in this regard.Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT - $199.99 (Amazon | Best Buy) Sony WH-1000XM3 - $349.99 (Amazon | Best Buy) Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless - $629.46 (Amazon) Sony WH-1000XM3. Image by UrAvgConsumer/YouTube If their phone does have a headphone jack, then a standard pair of wired headphones will do the trick. But since most phones come with a cheap set of earbuds in the box, the person probably doesn't need another set of those. So instead, we found some of the best deals on premium wired headphones:Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7BK - $179.00 (Amazon | Best Buy) Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 - $249.99 (Amazon) Oppo PM-3 - $599.99 (Amazon) Oppo PM-3. Image by Snazzy Labs/YouTube If none of those ideas work for you, don't fret. We have an entire guide dedicated to helping you find the perfect gift for the audiophile in your life, and this is one area where the options are really extensive. Check it out below:Don't Miss: 2018 Gift Guide: Awesome Audio Accessories for Music Lovers

8: DonglesThis next section is one we wish we didn't have to include, but the fact is many phones these days have ditched the headphone jack altogether. Perhaps the person you're shopping for has a pair of expensive wired headphones already — if this is the case, the best way for them to use their nice headphones with a newer phone is to grab an adapter. Specifically, a USB-C to minijack (3.5 mm) dongle:Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Adapter - MSRP $9 (Apple) Google Headphone Jack Adapter - MSRP $12 (Google) Razer Audio Adapter - MSRP $20 (Razer) If they've voiced their opinion against dongles in the past, they still have another option. There's a tiny Bluetooth adapter that you can plug into the end of any wired headphones to give them wireless capabilities — complete with the latest Hi-Fi Bluetooth codecs that Android 8.0 added support for. Check it out below:Don't Miss: This Tiny Adapter Makes Wired Headphones Work with Bluetooth The FiiO BTR3 Bluetooth adapter. Image by FiiO Official/YouTube

9: ChargersOne gift any smartphone user can benefit from is a good charger. My personal favorite at the moment is Google's Pixel Stand, which charges wirelessly and turns the phone into a live photo frame with Google Home features baked in — but sadly, none of these extra features work on non-Pixel 3 phones, so unless the person you're buying for has one, all the Pixel stand would be is a standard wireless charger.Speaking of wireless chargers, many Android phones are compatible with the Qi standard, which opens up a ton of possibilities for simple and cheap wireless charging pads. I'll link some of the best ones below in addition to the Pixel Stand. Then there's one final option here — standard charging cables. They probably have a few already, but since Android phones recently switched over to USB Type-C after using Micro USB for years, the person you're buying for likely doesn't have enough USB-C chargers and cables yet. I'll link to some good deals on longer cables so they don't have to huddle up against a wall when their battery is low.Google Pixel Stand - MSRP $79 (Google) IBIS Dual Wireless Qi Charger - MSRP $39.99 (Amazon) Anker Ultra Slim Qi Charger - MSRP $19.99 (Amazon) Samsung Fast Wireless Qi Charger - MSRP $49.99 (Amazon) Anker PowerLine 6 ft. USB-C Cable - MSRP $19.99 (Amazon) CableCreation 10 ft. USB-C Cable - MSRP $9.99 (Amazon) The Pixel Stand. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

10: Photo AccessoriesIf the person you're buying for is an avid smartphone photographer, our top recommendation is the Moment Telephoto Lens and case. As long as their phone has an official case available to it, you purchase the case, then snap in any of the available pro-style lenses to give the phone wide-angle, telephoto, and other lens capabilities. Before you run off to buy a lens, though, check Moment's site to grab a case for their phone, as the lenses will only work if they're attached to the case.Moment Wide-Angle (18 mm) - MSRP $99.99 (Amazon | Moment) Moment Superfish (15 mm) - MSRP $89.99 (Amazon | Moment) Moment Tele (58 mm) - MSRP $99.99 (Amazon | Moment) Moment Tele (60 mm) - MSRP $89.99 (Moment) Moment Macro - MSRP $89.99 (Amazon | Moment) Moment Anamorphic - MSRP $149.99 (Moment) There are other great gift ideas for mobile photographers, like tripods, selfie sticks, remote shutters, and memory cards. Since this area is so rich with ideas, we made a separate gift guide that's chock-full of the latest cool gadgets in this arena. Check it out below:Don't Miss: 2018 Gift Guide: Must-Have Phone Accessories for Photographers The 58 mm Moment Telephoto lens in action. News: 3 Reasons You Might Want to Switch to the Galaxy S9 from an iPhone

News: 3 Reasons You Might Want to Switch to the Galaxy S9 from an iPhone
It's human nature to wonder if the grass is greener on the other side. This is no more true than for people who use iPhones, and those who use Galaxy S phones. While iPhones were initially the gold standard for smartphones, Samsung's phones equal them in many ways and surpass them in others. If you use an iPhone and you're on the fence, here's the case for making the switch to a Galaxy S9 or S9+.The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are Samsung's latest and greatest piece of hardware, usurping almost every other Android phone — becoming the odds-on favorite to sell the most units among its Android brethren. We've compiled a list of three reasons that your next phone should be a Galaxy S9 or S9+ over any of the competing iPhones.

#1: Best-in-Class DisplayAccording to DisplayMate, the Galaxy S9 has the best display among any smartphone, beating out all other Android phones and iPhones — even the X. While the iPhone X also has an OLED display like the Galaxy S9 (as opposed to the LCD displays in all other iPhones), it was still no match for the Galaxy S9, which DisplayMate gave an A+ rating to. While the iPhone X is still a good choice with regards to its display, what consumer doesn't want the best for themselves? Image via Samsung

#2: Best Smartphone Camera EverSamsung's Galaxy S9+ (not the regular S9) swept the likes of the Pixel 2 and iPhone X under the rug on the way to the highest DxOMark score ever. We weren't exactly sure if its new Dual Aperture camera was just a marketing buzzword, but we're glad to see that this camera is legit. If taking pictures is important to you, the Galaxy S9+ should be at the top of your list. Image via Samsung

#3: Headphone JackI know, I know. To some of you, this feature means nothing — but to the rabid internet masses, this is a big sticking point. Many flagships have eschewed the headphone jack in favor of other features, iPhones included. Samsung, however, doubled down on headphone jacks — making a point of including them in all of their phones. If you listen to music primarily through Bluetooth, this might not matter much to you. However, if you've long-used headphones that connect via a 3.5 mm jack, you likely aren't too keen on stranding them in your bedside drawers or connecting them to dongles. Image via Samsung In all, if you would classify yourself as "in too deep" to the Apple ecosystem, then you probably shouldn't make the switch. It's not worth sacrificing years of paid apps and accessories. However, if you consider yourself relatively flexible and neutral, the Galaxy S9 or S9+ could very well be the feature-filled phone that you've been waiting for.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About the New Galaxy S9 & S9+Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: 5 Reasons Why Fortnite Avoiding the Play Store Is a Terrible Idea

News: 5 Reasons Why Fortnite Avoiding the Play Store Is a Terrible Idea
After getting confirmation from Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, we now know Fortnite Battle Royale will not be available on the Play Store when it's finally released for Android. Instead, users will have to download the APK directly from Epic Games' website — and quite frankly, this is a bad idea.By not distributing on the Play Store, Epic Games is increasing their chances for a number of problems. The big one is malware, where users will unknowingly download fake copies of the game's APK, leading to unintended consequences such as the loss of their data. It also complicates the procedure unnecessarily for new Android users who don't know about sideloading.Updates will also be an interesting process, since sideloaded apps can't be automatically updated via the Play Store. Instead, Epic Games will have to come up with a workaround. Also, Google's built-in provisions for in-app purchases will not work, which is very important for a game whose revenue comes primarily from in-app purchases. For all the complication and confusion, it simply doesn't make sense.Don't Miss: Fortnite Battle Royale Tips & Tricks for Mobile
Why Epic Isn't Using the Play StoreCEO Tim Sweeney spoke with The Verge regarding their decision to forgo the Play Store. According to Tim, Epic wanted to maintain a direct relationship with their customers wherever they can. Secondly, Epic didn't want to pay Google's 30% fee for all in-app purchases if they were to place the app on the Play Store. The first reason is based on the idea that whenever Epic could go the direct route, they did. Both PC and Android don't require games to be hosted on the central distribution platform (Steam for PC and the Google Play Store for Android), and in both situations, Epic Games has created their own direct pathways. The second reason is based on the idea that since Fortnite Battle Royale is free on all platforms, all their revenue is coming from in-app purchases — specifically V-bucks, which allow users to buy cosmetic items such as outfits, backpacks, and pickaxes. This strategy has been a huge success. In only 90 days of releasing the iOS version, they were able to reach $100 million in sale, the second-fastest app to do so behind Clash Royale. While it's easy to understand the reasons, the benefits don't outweigh the problems they are introducing by going this route.

1. Sideloading Can Be DangerousWhile for Android power users, sideloading may seem like a simple process that you've done countless times, it can be somewhat complicated for new users. Just like when the game was first released on iOS, Fortnite Battle Royale for Android will bring in new users who aren't as tech-savvy as others. Even with perfectly laid-out instructions, mistakes can be made. But what is more concerning is the danger of sideloading in general. One of the main reasons Android disables the feature by default is because apps outside of the Play Store can be malicious. APKs can come from any source and be posted by anyone. While the majority of the Android community are wholesome people who try to help new users, there is a portion of people who use Android's open-source nature for their own benefit. They can create fake apps that look like the real Fortnite game but are, in fact, something else. Whether they fill it with ads to make a profit or steal users' data to sell on the black market, there are a number of ways to take advantage of this situation and cause harm to potential new mobile Fortnite users. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks While the Play Store isn't perfect, it is a much more secure place. Google would be able to pull any fake apps masquerading as the real game and perform antivirus scans continuously to make sure the APK hasn't been modified by a third-party. Users reviews can steer people away from well-made duplicates which are in fact not the official game.A counter-argument can be made that, since Epic will be hosting the game on their official site, even the most novice users will know to get the APK directly from the official source. While this may be true, introducing the masses to the concept of sideloading without fully educating them on the risks can still cause problems with other APKs.

2. In-App Purchases Will Be More ComplicatedWith the Play Store, Android allows its users to save their credit card or debit card to their account for in-app purchases. This method is convenient, as your personal financial information is protected by Google but easily accessible whenever you need to make a purchase. You can even securely add third-party solutions such as PayPal or your carrier billing. However, sideloaded apps don't have access to this ability. Instead, you have to rely on the app's implementation for in-app purchases. You'll have to trust Epic Games, which is likely to offer fewer options for payment methods. And since the payment only works for Fortnite Battle Royale, it isn't as convenient as Android's built-in solution. Just like sideloading, this adds unnecessary complication to the process. New users probably already have a credit card or account saved to their Google account, but now they have to redo this process for Fortnite just because Epic wants to avoid a 30% charge.Things get even more worrisome when you consider the fake APKs that will inevitably be floating around the internet. If you have to enter credit card information in the game, a well-made fake could easily empty your bank account.

3. Updates Will Be Harder Than They Need to BeWhen an app is hosted on the Play Store, developers simply upload updates to Google's servers. The Play Store will inform users of the update, and depending on your settings, will automatically update the app for you. It is simple, fast, and designed so that even beginners will not get confused. But with sideloaded apps, you can't auto-update via the Play Store. Instead, Epic Games will have to find a workaround. It's possible they'll build this functionality into the game, but they may find it simpler to release a standalone Fortnite Updater app, which would be another app you have to sideload (and another attack surface for malware). Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks Even if they build updating functionality into the Fortnite app itself, the process won't be automatic. You'll still have to open the updated APK file and expressly tap "Install," as Android won't let non-system apps install updates for you. Then there's another wrinkle for devices running Android Oreo or higher. Since you'll be downloading the game from Epic's website, the new sideloading permission will have to be granted to your browser. But unlike past Android versions, this permission isn't system-wide, it's per-app. So after enabling your browser to sideload the game, you'll also have to grant this permission to Fortnite itself to be able to install updates that were downloaded through the game.
4. Epic Doesn't Have to Comply with Play Store RulesGoogle is now requiring all new apps to target Android Oreo. This means they must take advantage of several new features introduced in Android 8.0, including better use of background data, improvements to security, and improved user control for notifications (known as Notification Channels). If Epic Games posted their app on the Play Store, it would have to abide by this rule and the host of other regulations required by every app on the Play Store.Instead, they can, for example, target a lower version of Android to save themselves time. Right now, Android Oreo is only installed on 12.1% of Android phones. By not targeting Oreo, they can avoid the hassle of implementing features that only a handful of users will be able to take advantage of.However, both targeting Oreo and the other rules of the Play Store are designed to protect you. Apps in the Play Store are subjected to a list of rules that, if broken, can lead to it being pulled. Targeting Android Oreo protect you against malware, as apps have to be built using the latest security tools. With sideloading, you instead must trust the developer to do the right thing.Don't Miss: How Google's New App Policy is Fighting Android Malware
5. It Sets a Terrible PrecedentPerhaps the biggest drawback to this whole scenario is how it's paving the way to further Android fragmentation. With Fortnite being as big as it is, other game developers will be paying close attention to how this works out for Epic.If it starts looking like users are okay with sideloading, game studios won't be as worried about missing out on potential customers by not hosting their wares on the Play Store. In fact, we could be headed for a future where Android's official app store is an afterthought. Bigger games could follow suit by launching first on iOS, then using the hype from iPhone users to promote an APK download on their site. An extra 30% profit is plenty of motivation. On the surface, Google losing some of its tight grip on the Android ecosystem might sound like a good thing. But if they start losing money because of this, they'd be motivated to make sideloading as hard and convoluted as it is on iOS.Epic Games is already forced by Apple to use the App Store for many of same reasons we mentioned here, so why not just do the same with the Play Store, even though you have options not to? What do you think about Epic Games' decision? Photo Forensics: How to Check If a Picture Has Been Photoshopped or Not

Considering how easy and convenient Photoshop has become, even for the average computer user, it's nearly impossible to tell whether a photo is authentic, or if it's had some "improvements."Luckily, there's a free online tool that can help you sniff out the real from the fake. It's called FotoForensic, and here's how it works.Let's start with an unmodified photo. Here is a shot of myself, my girlfriend, and a very large pancake. After running it through FotoForensic, we get the photo to the right. This is an Error Level Analysis (ELA). It is identifying areas in the photo that are at different compression levels. When an image is saved or re-saved, the ELA should change at a fairly consistent rate. What this means is the colors you see in the picture to the right should be at roughly the same color range. The high-contrast areas in the photo are the only deviation, but you can tell by looking at the original image what these correspond to.Here is another photo of myself, my girlfriend, a very large pancake, and a very small Batman Photoshopped in. Notice here the white outline around the caped crusader? What's happened here is that because Batman was added after the fact, he didn't go through the same number of compressions as the original image. Thus, his ELA level is noticeably different than the rest of the image. His own ELA values are very consistent though, making it obvious that he is an entirely different image that has been superimposed.Give it a try yourself. Larger images (the original if you have access to them would be best) will produce better results, and it will take a little while to pick out the differences in better Photoshopped images. But with some practice, analyzing the ELA values is a great way to check for sneaky Photoshops.Want to do some more photo forensics?
