How To: Take Perfect Fireworks Photos with Your Android Phone

How To: Take Perfect Fireworks Photos with Your Android Phone
Many of you are ready to capture the litany of 4th of July fireworks that will litter the night sky, but if you're using a phone to capture the burst of fire in midair, it can get a little tricky. Don't worry, though — you'll be fine if you use these tips. While pro and semi-pro SLRs are the preferred choice of camera when it comes to fireworks photography (they can create some really spectacular sky creatures, even when they're blurry), what if your only option on Independence Day is your handy Android device? It doesn't matter if you have a Samsung, an LG, HTC, or a Google Pixel — these tips should help with any phone.

Tip 1: Use a Tripod with Your SmartphoneA steady camera is not only essential, but almost required when taking pictures in low-light conditions, such as the ones fireworks tend to thrive in. The longer shutter release time mixed with the slight movement of your smartphone can cause blur (though, that's not always a bad thing). Unless you're a machine, it's almost impossible to stand completely still, so a tripod is a lifesaver. If you don't have a tripod, there are many ways you can MacGyver one, including using a tennis ball or a rubber band. Or, just balance yourself and your smartphone against a tree or other structure in order to stabilize your movement.
Tip 2: Do NOT Use the FlashIf you're using flash, you're already screwing up. The flash that your smartphone emits is super weak, and it certainly doesn't cast light hundreds of feet into the air. Plus, fireworks are made of light, so why would you need to shine a light on them? At best, all you'll be doing with your flash turned on is annoying everyone around you who's trying watch the show.

Tip 3: Do NOT Use Digital ZoomWhen it comes to zoom, it may look alright on your device's screen, but when it's blown up, you'll notice all the resolution the picture has lost from the digital zoom. Unless you have a dual-lens camera with actual optical zoom, don't bother zooming in. If you need to see less of the surroundings in your fireworks pics, you can crop them later — it's effectively the same thing as digital zoom. Come on now, this just looks terrible. One more note about zooming: Even if your phone has dual cameras and a telephoto lens for true optical zoom, it turns into digital zoom if you go too far. For most of these types of phones, you can only zoom in optically up to 2X.

Tip 4: Decrease Exposure or BrightnessThis may sound counterintuitive since nighttime shots are usually too dark, but pictures of fireworks actually look a lot better when you turn down the exposure on your camera.Your phone automatically selects the best exposure and ISO value for the overall shot you're taking, so it lands somewhere in the middle of the dark night sky and the bright fireworks. If you manually lower the exposure, you'll end up with a night sky that's nice and black, which makes the lights of the fireworks show really pop. (1) Fireworks with automatic brightness and exposure settings. (2) Same fireworks with brightness settings lowered. Most phones will let you do this if you tap the viewfinder, then drag the brightness slider that appears. If not, you may have to enable pro mode on your camera, then turn down the exposure setting. Manually lowering exposure levels in Pro Mode.
Tip 5: Use HDRIf you enable HDR mode in your camera app, your phone will take a series of quick photos at varying exposure levels every time you press the shutter button. It then combines these images in post-processing, and the resulting picture is more vivid and lifelike than a normal photo would be.This is particularly useful for fireworks, as it can help capture the full range of light appearing in the sky. It may cause a bit of blur in your photos, so keep that in mind and/or disable the feature if you want perfectly crisp shots.

Tip 6: Disable the 'Review Pictures' SettingMany phones have a feature that can really screw things up when you're taking photos of fireworks. You'll find it in your camera app's settings, and it will usually be called "Review Pictures," or "Review."What this does is display a full-screen version of the picture you just captured every time you hit the shutter button. The intent is to help you make sure you got a good picture, and the review image goes away after a few seconds. But since fireworks are so quick and fleeting, the precious seconds wasted while showing the review image will prevent you from taking the next shot, so we suggest disabling it.

Tip 7: Enable Tracking AutofocusAll phones have autofocus, but many newer models have another type of focus that will help with fireworks. Called "Tracking Autofocus" or "Tracking AF" and available in your camera app's settings, this enables continuous autofocus when subjects are moving across your viewfinder — particularly useful for making sure the fireworks are always in focus.
Tip 8: Take Some Slow-Mo VideosSure, this isn't a tip for taking better fireworks photos, but hear me out. If your phone has slow-motion capabilities, you should definitely try taking a few quick videos of the fireworks — especially if you have a phone with 960 fps slow motion like the Galaxy S9. These can easily be converted into animated GIF images, which are simple to share anywhere.
Tip 9: Take Burst ShotsThe vast majority of phones have a feature that quickly captures a series of images if you hold down the shutter button in your camera app. Using this feature will not only ensure you capture the fireworks the split-second they hit their peak, but it will also let you make some cool animations (more on that next).

Tip 10: Let Google Photos Turn Your Burst Shots into GIFsAll Android phones come with an awesome app called Google Photos — if you're not using it, start now. The app automatically backs up all of your photos in high quality with unlimited cloud storage, and it uses some of Google's machine learning magic to add a few neat features. One of these features will help a lot if you used Tip 9 above — when Google Photos detects a series of images with motion, it automatically creates an animated GIF. Check out the example GIF Google Photos made for me below, and learn how to make GIFs manually here.
Other Tips for Taking the Perfect Fireworks PhotoFinally, we have a few more tips that can help you this 4th of July (or any other day that revolves around fireworks).Location is prime. Stay away from other sources of light, as they can ruin the picture. You want the fireworks to be the only light source. Find a clear view, one without buildings or other objects directly around you that may ruin the lighting in your picture. Figure out your phone's lag. The majority of smartphone cameras have a slight lag, so figure it out so you won't miss the perfect picture. Make sure you have enough storage. You don't want your camera to stop working midway during the fireworks show.Don't Miss: 5 Photography Tips for Taking Better Pictures with Your PhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Install the ElementalX Custom Kernel on Your Pixel or Pixel XL

How To: Install the ElementalX Custom Kernel on Your Pixel or Pixel XL
When it comes to modding an Android device, a custom kernel can take you farther than almost anything else. Most offer the ability to overclock your processor for performance gains, change your CPU governor, or even under-volt to increase battery life, among other features. Our favorite custom kernel is definitely ElementalX by flar2—and, amazingly enough, it's already available for the Pixel and Pixel XL. In addition to the above, it gives you great features like double-tap to wake and sweep to sleep, and it even bypasses SafetyNet restrictions to get Android Pay and Pokémon GO working on devices with unlocked bootloaders.Don't Miss: How to Root Your Google Pixel or Pixel XL
RequirementsWindows, Mac, or Linux computer ADB and Fastboot installed unlocked bootloader
Step 1: Download ElementalXFirst up, you'll need to download the ElementalX kernel and save it to your computer. So click one of the following links to do just that, but note that these files are device-specific, so make sure to download the right one.Download ElementalX for Google Pixel (.img) Download ElementalX for Google Pixel XL (.img) It's also worth noting that these kernel files are only intended for Android 7.1, so if you get a firmware update in the future, do not attempt to flash these files on newer Android versions.

Step 2: Move the File to Your Platform-Tools FolderNext up, copy the file that you just downloaded, then paste it in the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB and Fastboot installation directory. For Windows users, this can usually be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk.For Mac and Linux users, it depends on where you saved the ADB and Fastboot files when you installed the utility in the first place, so search your computer for the platform-tools folder if you don't remember. Copying the ElementalX file to the platform-tools folder on Windows.

Step 3: Put Your Device into Bootloader ModeNext up, you'll need to put your phone into Bootloader Mode. To do that, power your Pixel completely off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously. Within a few seconds, you should be greeted by Android's Bootloader menu, which looks like this: Bootloader Mode on the Pixel XL. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks When you see this screen, plug your Pixel into your computer using the USB data cable that came with the device. Aside from that, leave the phone alone, as it's time to do some work on the computer side of things.

Step 4: Flash ElementalXNext, if you're using a Windows PC, navigate to the platform-tools folder again. From here, hold down the shift button on your keyboard, then right-click any empty space and choose "Open command window here." If you're using a Mac or a Linux machine, open Terminal, then change directories to the platform-tools folder. Opening a command prompt in the platform-tools folder on Windows. Before we get into this next part, you should note that I'll be listing the commands for Windows users. Mac users will have to add a period and a slash (./) to the front of all commands shown here, and Linux users will have to add a slash (/) to the beginning (example: ./fastboot devices for Mac, or /fastboot devices for Linux). So from the command prompt, enter the following command to verify that everything's connected properly:fastboot devices If that returns a series of letters and numbers followed by the word "fastboot," then your device is connected properly and you're good to go. Otherwise, check your ADB and Fastboot installation, and ensure that your Pixel is in Bootloader Mode as shown in Step 3. Next up, it's time to flash the ElementalX kernel, but note that there are different commands depending on whether you're using a Pixel or Pixel XL. To flash the kernel on a Pixel, type the following command:fastboot flash boot EX-P-0.05.img Otherwise, to flash ElementalX on a Pixel XL, enter this command:fastboot flash boot EX-PXL-0.05.img At this point, you can type fastboot reboot in the command prompt to restart your phone and boot back into Android if you'd like, at which point you'd already be running the ElementalX kernel. However, if you previously rooted your Pixel or Pixel XL, you'll have to patch the new kernel to re-root your device.

Step 5: Re-Root (Rooted Users Only)Because of the way Chainfire's new root method works on the Pixel, you'll need to re-run the root script after installing any kernel if you'd like to retain root. If you've rooted your Pixel in the past, Chainfire's root script ("boot-to-root.img") should already be in your platform-tools folder—but if it's not, you can download the file again from Step 3 in this guide. So for this part, start by making sure the boot-to-root.img file is in the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB installation directory. From there, open a command window in this folder, then type the following:fastboot boot boot-to-root.img Once you've done that, the script will add the root files on top of your new ElementalX kernel then reboot your phone automatically. In other words, when your device finishes booting, you'll be rooted with ElementalX installed.

Step 6: Enjoy Your New KernelAt this point, it's safe to disconnect the USB cable and go about using your phone as you normally would. Since you've now installed ElementalX, you'll get awesome features like double-tap to wake and sweep to sleep, which are gestures that can turn your screen on or off. In addition to that, the kernel itself is optimized for better performance and battery life.If you'd like to take things a step further, you can install the ElementalX Manager app for $3.99. This allows you to customize many different features of your new kernel, including wake gestures, clock speed, voltage, CPU profiles, and even display calibration. In the future, it will even provide automatic kernel updates, once TWRP recovery becomes available for the Pixel. News: The Snapdragon 845 Will Revolutionize 2018 Phones Here's Why
The latest and greatest in Qualcomm's long line of mobile processors, the Snapdragon 845, is now set to touch down along with the Galaxy S9 and S9+. And as gorgeous as Samsung's newest flagships are, the processor that powers them under the hood is just as highly anticipated. The Snapdragon 835 marked a historic shift for Qualcomm, as it was the first SoC to be manufactured using 10nm FinFET process. The processor was a huge success, going on to power almost all the subsequent flagships like the S8 and OnePlus 5T without a hitch. Now that Qualcomm has this manufacturing process down pat, Android aficionados the world over are excited to see what it has up its sleeve with the official arrival of the Snapdragon 845.Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 has been redesigned from the ground up, engineered to be less compartmentalized. This means that separate modules are now better able to communicate with each other, which results in significantly better efficiency and faster performance when compared to its predecessors.Don't Miss: Everything We Know About Samsung's Upcoming Galaxy S9With the Galaxy S9's imminent arrival, we decided to focus on what's under their hood and touch upon several features and improvements this latest SOC brings to the table — after all, it will be powering almost all major Android flagship phones in 2018.
Dual HotwordsThe 835's machine learning skills were a vast improvement over its predecessors and made strides towards understanding verbal commands, most notably in listening for hotwords to summon AI assistants like Bixby and Google. There was a notable limit, however, as the Snapdragon 835 and its counterparts allowed for only one hotword to be supported. The Snapdragon 845 will come with one key upgrade in this regard, thanks to a more powerful third generation Hexagon DSP, which will allow for significantly better machine learning. In fact, David Ruddock, an editor for AndroidPolice, has gone on to claim that the 845 will support the use of two hotwords, a notable first in the industry. As he explains:btw I don't know how many people know this, but "OK/Hey Google" is really just one hotword: "ay Google." Try it. It's actually a pretty clever little trick, because current hardware only supports one hotword on a device at a time. Future chipsets (like SD845) will support two.
— David Ruddock (emphasis mine)Having one more hotword to listen for has huge implications for how we summon our AI assistants moving forward, as it frees us up from having to say "Hey" or "Okay" and gives us more options to call for either Bixby, Google, Alexa, or even Cortana. In fact, such tech could be used to give you two virtual assistants on one device. So if you thought your device was smart before, wait until the S9 and subsequent 845-equipped flagships roll out.
Performance of a ThoroughbredThe Snapdragon 845 is poised to be a significant improvement over the 835 with regards to sheer processing power. According to Qualcomm, the latest chipset will render graphics 30% faster with a 2.5X higher display throughput, all while performing visual processes 30% more efficiently than its predecessor.Several tests seem to confirm this, with Anandtech showing the 845 blowing the 835 out of the water in a series of overall performance and GPU tests. Astonishingly, the 845 kept up with Apple's vaunted A11 in a series of GPU tests, even outpacing it in a few.Though these numbers likely don't reflect real life usage as the chipset enters the mainstream market, they do give us a picture of the 845's capabilities and potential. The race for a faster, more efficient processor has been ongoing even before the first Android G1 and iPhone touched down, and the arrival of the Snapdragon 845 will surely take this race up a couple notches — which will be good for everyone in the end.
Improved Image Signal ProcessorOne of the limitations of previous Snapdragon chipsets was a lackluster ISP, which placed undue limitations on camera performance. Because of this, other companies were left with no choice but to create their own, most notably Google and its in-house Pixel Visual Core ISP. Thankfully, Qualcomm has appeared to remedy this with the Snapdragon 845, and has come up with the Spectra 280 ISP.This new ISP should greatly improve overall camera performance and will allow for Ultra HD Premium video playback and encoding at 4K up to 60 fps. It also supports slow-motion video capture at either 720p up to 480 fps, or 1080p up to 240 fps. In addition to these, the 845's ISP will be capable of selective motion capture, "deep" portrait mode, along with various depth sensing technologies. The implications are enormous for subsequent handsets that'll utilize the 845, as this can potentially revolutionize the quality in which we capture images and videos on our smartphones. True 4K photos and videos are right around the corner, with Snapdragon 845 leading the way.Don't Miss: All the New Phones We Expect to See at Mobile World Congress 2018Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Step 2: Install the Client Program & DriverBecause connecting through Bluetooth and USB are the easier options (just connect or plug in and you're ready), we'll go through the Wi-Fi setup, since it's applicable to both Windows and Mac.If you have a Windows PC, download and install the following two files.WO Mic Client setup program for Windows WO Mic device driver for Windows If you have a Mac, download and install the following package.WO Mic Client package for Mac You may need to adjust your Mac's security preferences in order to open the package. Alternatively, you can simply control-click (or right-click) on the file, and select "Open."

Step 3: Connect the MicOpen WO Mic on your Android and enter the Settings, select Transport, then select "Wifi" from the options (unless you're using Bluetooth or USB). Depending on what you're using the mic for, select the proper Audio source. Additional settings allow you to change the media and control port, but you shouldn't need to adjust those. Go back to the main page of the app and tap Start, then copy the IP address displayed above the microphone icon. Open the WO Mic Client on your computer, enter the IP address, and hit Connect. To test it out, check the "Play in speaker" box and speak into your Android. And that's all there is to it—you have a fully functional microphone for your computer without paying an extra dime. Before forking over some money for a microphone, definitely try WO Mic. I found that latency really wasn't an issue, so this is a great way to narrate videos, record memos, or make calls. How To: Enable System UI Tuner on Android 9.0 Pie to Remove Status Bar Icons

How To: Enable System UI Tuner on Android 9.0 Pie to Remove Status Bar Icons
For the first time since its inception, the famously hidden System UI Tuner has to be unlocked in a new way. No longer can you long-press the gear icon (found in Quick Settings) until it spins and reveals the hidden settings option. With Android 9.0 Pie, there's a new workaround to reveal the menu. For the unaware, System UI Tuner let you choose which icons to show in the status bar. For the majority of the icons, you can simply turn it off or on, but there are some additional controls for time and battery. It is a great tool to give you a bit more customization, and it cleans up unnecessary icons which crowd your status bar.

Step 1: Create a WidgetFirst, you'll need to create a widget using an activity launcher. There are dedicated activity launcher apps, but we've found most of them to be incompatible with Android Pie at this time. So your best bet is to use Nova Launcher, which includes an activity launcher feature.Install Nova Launcher for free from the Google Play Store With Nova opened, long-press the home screen and choose "Widgets." There is a section for widgets created by Nova Launcher, within it an option known as "Activities." Select this option, then scroll down and tap "System UI," then choose "System UI demo mode" at the bottom.

Step 2: Launch System UI TunerNext, tap the widget to launch the menu. You will be presented with two options, "Status bar" and "Do not disturb." The former will manage which icons appear on the status bar.To disable any status bar option, simply turn off the toggle switch next to it. Battery and Time are the only two options without a toggle. Battery opens a popup menu with options on whether to display the battery percentage only during charging or always. Time will launch a popup menu where you have the option to display not just hours and minutes, but seconds as well. Under "Do not disturb," there is only one option: "Volume buttons shortcut." When disabled, you won't be able to enter DND mode by lowering the volume to zero, then pressing volume down one more time. While System UI Tuner isn't as robust as it once was, it still offers great tools when it comes to customizing your Android experience. Although it has a new method to access, it is still worth unlocking to clean up your status bar and to prevent accidental activation of Do Not Disturb mode.Don't Miss: All the Cool New Features Available Now in Android 9.0 PieFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Check if Your Significant Other Used Ashley Madison to Cheat on You

How To: Check if Your Significant Other Used Ashley Madison to Cheat on You
Unless you've been living under a rock or ignoring recent news headlines, Ashley Madison, the dating site for married people (or individuals in a committed relationship) has recently been hacked. Millions of their users are shitting their pants, and for good reason, as all of those accounts have just been leaked. The leak, which was initially posted on the dark web, provides all sorts of juicy information, like names, numbers, addresses, and even sexual preferences. For those truly worried about adultery or infidelity in your relationship—or if you just want some juicy gossip on your boss—here's how to check if your significant other, coworker, or buddy has signed up for the service.

Method 1: Check the Official LeakThe leaked PDF of user information was posted on the dark web, which can only be accessed over Tor. If you want to access the PDF and all its contents, check out the simple-to-follow guide on how to set up and use Tor browser. From there, a simple search for the .onion address will get you where you need to be. Just be aware that the file is huge (over 7 GB). Most have been taken down already, so you might have a hard time finding it even on Tor. However, dumps have already started to trickle down into The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites, so you might have better luck there (no Tor required).

Method 2: Use Third-Party CheckersIf you don't want to go through the process of installing Tor or hunting on torrent sites, there are a few people that have put up their own checker services. While we can't vouch for their authenticity—after all, they could simply be trying to phish information—their sources seem legit. The first method is provided by Rufo, the same individual who made the checker tool when Adobe's information was leaked in 2013. All you need to do is navigate to ashley.cynic.al and enter an email address to see if it was included in the leak. A second site, checkashleymadison.com, also exists, and offers the ability to check by phone number in addition to an email address. This site claims that their intention was not to out anyone, rather to provide users the ability to see if their information was leaked, but that's not going to stop any suspicious wives from using it. Suspicious husbands need not bother as 96% of the users are male. While approximately 36 million accounts are included in the dump, only 24 million were allegedly activated, so just because someone is on this list doesn't mean they actually used the service. Keep that in mind.

One downside to iOS 11's awesome built-in QR code scanner in the Camera app is its only been live for a short while. How To: Root Any Samsung Galaxy S4 in One Click
Something pretty awesome happened over the last couple of days. George Hotz, better known as Geohot, the infamous hacker known for jailbreaking iOS and exploiting the Sony Playstation 3, has brought joy to owners of just about all Android smartphones and tablets, especially those on AT&T and Verizon. His latest offering, TowelRoot, roots Android devices in about twenty seconds, and it works for all carriers, not matter how much yours may try to lock you down. With TowelRoot, not only have root capabilities come to the masses, but Geohot has likely claimed himself over $18000 in various bounties for root exploits. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Note that the video above is showcasing the Galaxy S5, but the steps will be exactly the same for any variant of the Galaxy S4, as well as other Android devices, except for HTC and Motorola. For a more detailed explanation behind this exploit, check out Dallas' article for a full breakdown.

Step 1: Download & Install TowelRootThe process couldn't be easier—start by making sure you have installation from "Unknown sources" enabled, then just grab the TowelRoot apk from here and install. We're rooting using a pretty genius method. It basically exploits the kernel, which freezes Android, and while the OS is sitting there panicking, it asks for root privileges and Android gives them to it. Then, it copies over the necessary root files and reboots the phone. But because of the way this exploit functions, you'll see a nice scary warning when installing TowelRoot—check that you understand the risks, then hit Install anyway.

Step 2: Run TowelRootNow hit the make it ra1n button, and let the app do its thing. It'll automatically reboot your device, and then you'll be rooted! Yes, it really is that easy. Really.

Step 3: Install SuperSUWhile TowelRoot will root your device, it will not install a root manager, which is critical for keeping malicious apps from gaining root access. Far and away the best root manager is SuperSU from developer Chainfire. Head to the Play Store to grab the app directly. Install it and run. You can skip the part where the app asks if you'd like it to remove KNOX, but to each their own. Either way, you're rooted and ready to roll. And it couldn't have been easier.

Sometimes called "LED throwies" because people used to add a magnet and toss them at metal bridges (please don't do this…it's littering, and e-waste materials don't belong in landfills or the street). LED is short for light-emitting diode.

Instagram 101: Why You Should Never Put Hashtags in Your Posts

In this article, I am most likely going to humiliate myself by showing you all the horrible hashtagging I am wont to do. When it comes to hashtags, well, everybody knows if you desire any chance at all of getting noticed on Instagram, you got to hashtag. The thing is, within a post's caption, hashtags look really messy. Ever see those accounts that have just like way too many useless hashtags under a photo that isn't even that great? Yeah, that's me, and that's probably a lot of other people out there too.In the beginning of my IG career — that's about four Instagram accounts ago — I was known to use IG's 30 hashtag limit all the way to its shameful max: Don't Miss: How to Take Screenshots of Disappearing Photos on Instagram Direct Without Getting CaughtAs you can see, I filled up my hashtag limit in the post's body and then also continued to embarrasingly hashtag my way throughout the comments. Did I get more followers? Did I even get many likes? Not really.Instead, too many hashtags in a caption make your posts look terrible.Think about it, your image and its caption are the first thing people see on their feeds. You don't want to bombard them with a bunch of ####, do you? Have you ever wanted to read through someone's list of hashtags? Hmm, I'm going to guess that's a no.For instance, check out IG influencer Talia Richman's page. If you look through her posts, you'll notice that she never puts hashtags in a post's caption. Your posts will not only look much better, but you'll probably stop coming off as some kind of bot throwing up hashtags everywhere too. After all, hashtags are not meant to be read, they are meant for people to find you. As the protectors of all things good, the Federal Communications Commission is usually busy behind the scenes pissing off Slim Shady, giving out fines for indecent nipple exposure at certain halftime events, and warning the NSA about losing any "confidential" phone information they steal from us.Now the FCC is on a quest to not only evaluate, but also improve mobile broadband network performance for consumers, i.e. us. Today, I'm going to show you the FCC Speed Test app, which not only measures your mobile broadband performance, but is also the first step from the FCC towards gathering data and mapping out smartphone speeds across the country. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Once you open it up, you'll be taken through a brief Privacy & Terms of Use which outlines that the app collects information such as location, time of data, performance, etc., and that they share it with third-parties. I know it may sound a bit intrusive, but all of the information they collect is nothing personal, and for the greater good. Once you go through the terms, you can feel free to run a test and check out certain data on your device, like the following.Download (speed in which you can download) Upload (speed in which you can upload) Latency (how much of a lag there is; the lower the better) Packet loss (when one or more packets of data traveling across a computer network fails to reach their destination) The tests will run on your device and give you statistics in a matter of seconds. If you want to check your mobile data statistics, make sure that you are disconnected from Wi-Fi, as the test will always check Wi-Fi over mobile data. Below, you can see the stats for both my mobile and Wi-Fi speeds. If you don't know what the download/upload speeds mean for your particular carrier, call them and ask. BGR claims that "AT&T's 4G LTE network is the fastest with download speeds averaging 18.6 Mbps and average upload speeds of 9.0 Mbps. Verizon was found to operate the second fastest LTE network with average download speeds of 14.3 Mbps and upload speeds of 8.5 Mbps."While the country-wide statistics may change, it's good to know what your current download and upload speeds are, so as to see how they compare with other carrier speeds out there. From the settings, you can also mess with such things as how often you want the tests to be run in the background, how much data they can use (if using mobile data, the tests will use a small amount), the location where the tests can be run, and a few other things. While it may seem to do what many other apps do, like Internet Speed Meter, this one is fast and simple and not very obtrusive. It also helps the FCC out with mapping out speeds across the United States, which will eventually help out all of us in getting the best speeds possible.
