How To: Turn Your Android Phone into the Ultimate Fitness Tracker

How To: Turn Your Android Phone into the Ultimate Fitness Tracker
It seems like everyone is getting in shape these days (or at least trying to improve their fitness), and as a result, there's an endless supply of fitness trackers and smartwatches hitting the market. This is all very wonderful, unless of course, you're broke and can barely afford a decent pair of running shoes. But here's the good news: you don't really need any of those things.Don't Miss:Pokémon GO Just Gamified the Non-Sedentary LifestyleFitness trackers and smartwatches can certainly help you achieve your fitness goals, but getting in shape shouldn't have to be expensive. In fact, the only tech you really need in your quest for the perfect bod is your trusty Android smartphone.Today, we're going to show you how to turn your Android phone into the ultimate fitness tracker. From checking your calorie intake to recording your heart rate, what follows are some of the best fitness-related applications for all your training needs.

1. Calorie Counting: MyFitnessPalWhen it comes to getting in shape, working out is important, yes, but managing your calorie intake is equally crucial. Without an active understanding of what you're putting into your body, all of your hard work will ultimately go to waste. As such, we recommend MyFitnessPal for managing your calorie intake. The app allows you to set your goal weight, and once set, MyFitnessPal will automatically calculate how much you should be eating on a daily basis in order to achieve that goal.Install MyFitnessPal for free from the Google Play Store On top of this, MyFitnessPal will break these calories down by their nutritional impact. Simply select Calories Remaining, then scroll to the bottom of the page and select Nutrition. Here, you will be able to see how your calorie intake is broken down by breakfast, lunch, and dinner; additionally, at the top of this page, you can switch to a different tab such as Nutrients and Macros, which will break down your calories by protein, carbs, fiber, sugars, etc.

2. Fitness Tracking: Strava, MovesWhen you decide to get up and get going, your Android can help track how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned using GPS, your accelerometer, and other on-device sensors. For tracking your fitness activities, we highly recommend Strava and Moves.Install Strava for free from the Google Play Store Install Moves for free from the Google Play Store Of these two applications, Strava is the more feature-rich. It can accurately track all your runs, bike rides, and walks through the local neighborhood. However, the real selling point of Strava is its ability to compete against others in your area who are also using the application.Whenever you use Strava to track your run (or anything else), it'll automatically show you some of the best times fellow Strava users have put up on the same exact route. Additionally, you can explore popular routes that other users are currently utilizing in your area.To browse different segments on Strava, simply select Feed -> Segment Explorer, and Strava will automatically show you segments in your current area. If all of this seems like too much of a hassle, Moves is a great app for fitness tracking that requires very little involvement from you. Simply install the app, keep your smartphone on you while your exercise, and Moves will automatically track your activity. Also, both Strava and Moves will allow you share your activity feeds on Facebook—that way you can show off to all your friends and family that you don't need Pokémon GO to leave the couch.Don't Miss: Fake Your GPS Location & Movement to Cheat at Pokémon GO on Android

3. Check Your Pulse: Heart Rate MonitorMonitoring your heart rate is a major selling point for many expensive fitness-tracking devices; however, your phone can track your heart rate just as well. For those of you with a built-in heart rate monitor (like on a Samsung Galaxy S7), you're already set. However, if you don't have a fancy smartphone, Instant Heart Rate for Android has you covered.Install Instant Heart Rate for free from the Google Play Store Instant Heart Rate uses the camera sensor on your phone to accurately record your heart rate, and with that information, you can see whether or not your resting heart rate is improving, or whether or not you are reaching the heart rate threshold you need to meet your fitness goals.Don't Miss: Detailed Instructions on Using Instant Heart Rate on Android

4. Check Body Fat: BMI CalculatorCalculating your BMI, or body mass index, might not seem important, but knowing your BMI can give you some insight into your body's muscle/mass composition. By taking into account your height and weight, a BMI calculator can show you what percentage of your body's composition is fat. And, armed with this information, you can further adjust your fat intake and workout schedule to compensate for a poor BMI reading.Install BMI Calculator for free from the Google Play Store

5. Start Running: Couch to 5KFor the average unfit person, there's nothing more terrifying than running. I mean, who in their right mind would do such a thing to themselves for fun? That being said, if you've been looking for a running program geared more towards beginners, look no further than C25K, aka Couch to 5K.Install C25K - 5K Running Trainer for free from the Google Play StoreDon't Miss:This Android Step Counter Makes You Get Off Your Ass to Use Your AppsCouch to 5K is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly running programs out there. C25K guides you through warm-ups, your runs, and depending on your fitness level, will break up your exercise into run/walk intervals so that you never overexert yourself. As a bonus, C25K integrates with MyFitnessPal and adjusts your calories based on how much you've exercised.

6. Weight Training: JEFITWeight training is one of the most effective ways to activate your metabolism and stimulate weight loss. However, for many people, it can be extremely intimidating as well. For a beginner, walking into a gym and seeing a whole bunch of weights and exercise machines can be a confusing experience. This is where JEFIT can help.Install JEFIT Workout Tracker Gym Log for free from the Google Play Store JEFIT features a whole variety of weightlifting programs for all your muscle groups to help you stay focused at the gym, but that's not all: JEFIT can record your lifting progress, how much rest time you utilize between lifts, and it keeps it all in a journal that gives you detailed analytics about your progress. Also, you can see the progress of all your friends who are also using the app to assist them in their training. To see custom tailored workout plans, simply swipe right to left to the Workout tab. Here, there are a number of routines for you to try out. Alternatively, you can go to the Exercises tab, and once there, select a muscle group you are curious about.

7. Fitness Routines: 7 Minute WorkoutIf working out in the comfort of your own home is more your style, 7 Minute Workout has you covered. The app is a great way to make use of the items in your home to assist you in your fitness goals instead of going to a traditional gym.Install 7 Minute Workout for free from the Google Play Store Each 7 Minute workout consists of twelve high-intensity exercises with 10-second breaks in-between each exercise. It's easy, fun, and really, with so many exercise programs at the tips of your fingers, there's no excuse not to workout. Did we miss a good fitness-tracking app? How To: Open Third-Party Apps from Unidentified Developers in macOS
Apple has a built-in way to protect you from opening up potentially malicious apps on your computer in Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and macOS Sierra. This setting, named Gatekeeper, will never stop you from installing apps from the Mac App Store, but it could from anywhere else. If it's an app you're sure you want to install on your system, here's how to do it.

Choosing Your Gatekeeper OptionsOpen up your "System Preferences" and head to "Security & Privacy." In the "General" tab, you'll see a section called "Allow apps downloaded from." In order to change these settings, you'll have to click on the lock icon below and input your admin password. Once that's out of the way, you can choose between three options:Mac App Store Mac App Store and identified developers Anywhere
1. Just the Mac App StoreThe safest option to choose here would be the "Mac App Store," since Apple reviews all apps that are accepted in their store and can remove them quickly if necessary. Basically, you'll know that your Mac will be as free as possible from malware if you use this option only.
2. Mac App Store & Trusted DevelopersThe next option also trusts apps from "identified developers," which are basically developers with a unique Developer ID from Apple who have their apps signed digitally. This is the option I use, since Apple can verify that there hasn't been any tampering with the apps since they were signed.
3. Apps from AnywhereThe last option, "Anywhere," obviously removes Gatekeeper's blocking capabilities on your Mac, letting you install and open any app off the internet, including Automator apps made by individuals. Sometimes these things have malware baked in, so I would recommend using the "identified developers" option and okay installation of apps missing a Developer ID on a case-by-case basis.

Trusting Apps on a Case-by-Case BasisIf you have the "Mac App Store and identified developers" option selected, then whenever you download an app without a Developer ID and try to open it, you'll get the following warning."App Name" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer To bypass this restriction, select "OK" on the popup to close it, then go into the "Security & Privacy" section in your "System Preferences." Below the Gatekeeper options in the "General" tab, you'll see the app that was blocked from opening. To trust it, select "Open Anyway" and that's it.

An Even Shorter Way to Open ThemIf you don't want to go into Systems Preferences to open an app for the first time as shown above, then simply Control+Click on the app in the Finder, then select "Open." You'll see a new popup asking if you're sure you want to run the app on your Mac. Just hit "Open" again and you're set. Big thanks to Michael Cunningham for bringing this trick to my attention in the comments below. This is the best way to keep your Mac running malware-free, while still being able to download and use cool apps that haven't been signed yet. This includes a lot of Automator actions built by regular users to streamline a certain process, like resizing images for the web automatically just by dragging and dropping photos into the app.If you were to build an Automator app yourself, Gatekeeper wouldn't block you from opening it since you never downloaded it from the internet, but any you get from us would. For more information on how Gatekeeper works, check out Apple's overview.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Use & Customize Control Center on Your iPhone

How To: Use & Customize Control Center on Your iPhone
One of the most exciting features in iOS 11 was the fully revamped Control Center, which improved the overall interface visually, made it one page only, and finally made it possible to customize what controls actually appear within it. Customizable controls was previously only available to jailbreakers, but now it's available to anyone running iOS 11 or iOS 12.Since its introduction in iOS 7, the Control Center has remained a drab staple on the iPhone and other iOS devices. The only way to fully customize it was through tweaks that were only available if you were lucky enough to catch a stable jailbreak. Now, any iPhone running iOS 11 or iOS 12 comes with a customizable Control Center by default, something that was long overdue. Better late than never, and it's one of the many features Apple is using to successfully dissuade many towards the risky proposition of jailbreaking, thus keeping the iOS ecosystem more secure as a whole.Don't Miss: 100+ Coolest New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About

What's Different in Control CenterThe Control Center in iOS 11 and iOS 12 is markedly different from the other versions that came before. On iPhone models with Touch ID, it's accessed via a swipe up from the bottom of the screen just like before, but on Face ID models, you swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.First thing that catches the eye is its overall dark theme and more compartmentalized layout. The second thing you'll notice is that it's only one page, which is way less clunky than the two-page Control Center from iOS 10. That means the Music player is now a tile you can long-press or 3D Touch on to expand, versus being on a separate page. And for the first time, you are now presented with many more custom tiles that let you toggle, adjust, and access a variety of applications that were absent in iOS 10 and lower. The most notable standard additions are the Volume, Cellular Data, and Personal Hotspot, which can now be switched on and off on the fly.As you can see below, the new Control Center (middle) looks way better overall than the iOS 10 version (left). Doing a long-press or 3D Touch on the upper-left box opens it up to more tiles that you can toggle on and off (right). And yes, you heard that right ... long-pressing actually works for non-3D Touch devices. Control Center in iOS 10 (left) and iOS 11 (middle, right). And it doesn't end here. You can add more tiles to the bottom of the Control Center to tailor your device to your needs as never before, so let's go over that next.

Customizing Your Control CenterIt's incredibly easy to add shortcut tiles (or quick setting tiles, to steal from Android) into your iPhone's Control Center. Simply head over to the Settings page, choose "Control Center," then "Customize Controls." From there, you can freely choose which tiles you'd like to add in, then just exit once you're done. There are some options you can't remove or reorganize, though, including Airplane Mode, Cellular Data, Personal Hotspot, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirDrop, AirPlay, Volume, Do Not Disturb, Rotation Lock, and the Music player. The ones you can add/reorganize include Flashlight, Timer, Calculator, Camera, Home, Accessibility Shortcuts, Alarm, Apple TV Remote, Do Not Disturb While Driving, Guided Access, Hearing, Low Power Mode, Magnifier, Notes, Scan QR Code, Screen Recording, Stopwatch, Text Size, Voice Memos, and Wallet. Hopefully, this list grows to third-party apps one day. Images by Jake Peterson/Gadget Hacks To add controls, just tap the green plus (+) icon next to the control name from the More Controls section. To remove a control, under the Include section, tap the red minus (–) button. To rearrange items in the Include section, tap-and-hold on the three-lined icon next to a control, then move it up or down on the list, then repeat for any other controls you want to move.

Using Quick Actions in the Control CenterAs briefly mentioned before, quick actions are not limited to just 3D Touch-enabled devices. For instance, doing a long-press on the Flashlight tile paves the way for an adjustment bar that in turn lets you fine-tune its brightness. Don't Miss: How to Unlock Apple's Official 'Dark Mode' for iPhone A long-press or 3D Touch on other icons like the Timer and Camera gives you more quick options that you can choose from. For the Timer, examples include adjusting the time limit and quickly starting the timer with a tap of a button. For the Camera, you can choose to open it up in a specific shooting mode and save you from the hassle of scrolling through within the app itself. And there's more too, so go ahead and explore. We won't ruin all the fun for you!Don't Miss: How to Use the Shortcuts App on Your iPhone in iOS 12 for Custom Siri Actions & MoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Set Volume Levels to Change During Scheduled Times on Android

How To: Set Volume Levels to Change During Scheduled Times on Android
Different times call for different ringtone volumes. When you're at work or school, you need your phone to be quiet so it doesn't make a disturbance—but when you're at home or out and about, the volume should be turned back up so you don't miss any important notifications. Some phones let you set volume levels on a schedule, but most don't. You could use Tasker to solve this issue, but that would be more trouble than it's worth. Luckily, developer Yogesh Dama has come up with a super simple app that will automatically change your volume levels based on the time of day and day of the week.
Don't Miss: How to Make Your Volume Buttons Control Media Volume by Default

Step 1: Install Volume SchedulerTo get this one going, start by installing Dama's free app, which is called Volume Scheduler.Install Volume Scheduler from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Set Up a Volume ProfileNext up, make sure Volume Scheduler is enabled by turning on the switch at the top of the app's main menu. From here, you'll notice two preset volume profiles named Office and Home. You could use the + button at the bottom of the screen to create your own profile from scratch, but to make things easier, just tap one of the presets, then select "Edit" from the menu to make it your own. From here, you can rename the profile if you'd like, but make sure to tap "Volume Profile" to adjust the individual volume levels for when this profile is active. Beyond that, you can set a custom ringtone and notification sound for this profile using the other two entries in the Profile Settings category. Setting volume levels to zero for the "Office" profile. Next, scroll down a bit and use the options in the Schedule Settings section to choose the time when this volume profile will become active, as well as the days of the week.Beyond that, take note of the "Show popup and ask before applying on schedule time" option. With this enabled, your volume levels won't change automatically, and instead, you'll see a popup asking if you'd like to set the volume. So to make things as seamless as possible, I'd recommend disabling this option, which will cause the volume levels to be applied automatically during your scheduled hours. When you're done there, back out to the main menu, then repeat this same process for the other volume profile. In the end, you should have one profile that lowers your volume levels during work or school hours, then a second profile that raises your volume levels when you're at home.

Step 3: Never Adjust Volume Levels AgainFrom now on, you can stop manually adjusting your volume levels, because Volume Scheduler will take care of that for you. When the time comes, all of your volume levels will automatically be set to the values you chose in Step 2, so there's no need to worry about disturbing your coworkers anymore. News: This Wireless Beacon Lights Up Whenever You're Near a Speed Trap

Speeding tickets suck, and I don't know a single person that can tell me otherwise. But the reality is, most of us will break the speed limit for one reason for another, regardless of the pricey risk.If you don't want a bulky radar detector (which only somewhat works), but want to go one step above what Waze offers, then take a look at TrapTap. It's a little gadget you stick on your dashboard (there's also an attachment for motorcycles) that uses blinking LEDs to alert you if you're approaching a speed trap, red light camera, or school zone.
I want so badly to say something snarky about the condescending pitchman in that video, but I'll hold off.TrapTap works similarly to the reporting feature in Waze. The device wirelessly connects to your phone's GPS, and you just tap the button twice when you come upon a speed trap to set a beacon. Other users will see their device blink when they approach that point, indicating that it's time to slow down.TrapTap blinks blue for police speed traps, red for red light cameras, and green for school zone reminders. Since radar detectors are legal in all states for personal vehicles, TrapTap could be more appealable to military personnel and drivers in commercial vehicles who have one too many tickets already, both of whom can't use radar detectors legally. Image via TrapTap TrapTap got around $290,000 US from 2,697 backers on its Kickstarter campaign, which was almost 3.5 times its original goal. If you still want to get in on the action, you can snag one from Indiegogo for $119, and it will hopefully begin shipping in August. Total amount raised so far is almost $360,000!On the downside, the data is all (or mostly) user-reported, so TrapTap will really only be effective if there are other users in your area. Also, TrapTap's developers are saying that the gadget will improve road safety, but c'mon—TrapTap could empower already-bad drivers to become even worse.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

News: Snapdragon 660 Benchmarked Not Far Below the Galaxy S8+
Someone out there is testing an unknown mid-range phone codenamed "Heart," and it has a 16% lead in speed on the Oppo F3 Plus and is just 15% shy of the Samsung Galaxy S8+, according to GSM Arena. The unknown device contains Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 660. The SoC uses eight-core Kryo 260 CPU and performs up to 20% higher performance than Snapdragon's prior generation, the 653, which the Oppo F3 Plus mid-range phone contains. The 660 is also built on a 14 nm process for efficiency and uses Hexagon 680 DSP to improve performance and battery life.Qualcomm's new mid-range SoC was benchmarked on Geekbench 4.1 with a score of 5,455 in the multi-core test compared to the Galaxy S8+ which came in at 6,301, or 15% higher. The Snapdragon 653, which powers the Oppo F3 Plus, came in at 4,695 in the same test, which is 16% lower than the 660.Don't Miss: Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 — The Processor That'll Power Your Next High-End PhoneHeart was also tested on GeekBench 4.1 with a 10% increase in single-core performance over the Oppo F3 Plus. The device benchmarked at 1,588, while the S8+ tested in at 1,832 and the F3 Plus at 1,438.Both tests reveal a pretty decent bump in speed for Qualcomm's latest mid-range SoC. Snapdragon 660 is right under 835, meaning that whatever device 660 ties itself could be a decent runner-up to the Galaxy S8+.We'll have to wait for Snapdragon 660 devices to hit the market. And we're yet to see the Snapdragon 630 perform, but it uses low-power Cortex-A53 cores so we don't expect any major improvements in performance. This means the 660 might be the mid-range chipset to have.
— GSM ArenaThe 630, which is also coming out, is the successor to the Snapdragon 626. To learn more about the new Snapdragon 630 and 660 SoCs, check out Qualcomm's breakdown of the new technologies, which bring even more flagship-style features in the 600-tier processor series to mid-range devices.Don't Miss: Snapdragon 835 Will Power Three Pixel 2 VariantsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+
