News: The End of Dead Phone Batteries Is Closer Than You Think

The old "my battery is dead" excuse for not calling your mother may soon be a thing of the past. A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), led by Professor Jo Byeong-jin, has developed a "wearable thermo-element" that can be built into clothing to power your electronic devices. The science behind the innovation converts body heat (thermal energy) into usable electric energy. Made with lightweight glass fiber, this small thermo-element strip can produce about 40mW of electricity, which is enough to start a semiconductor chip. But when scaled up to the size of a jacket, it can produce closer to 2W of energy, which is enough for using a mobile phone. While forms of this tech have been around for quite some time, this application may be on the market sooner than you think. According to Professor Byeong-jin, the technology "will be commercialized within the next two – three years" and "can be mass-produced easily", with costs being lower than average battery prices today. The utility of this type of innovation is vast, as these materials can go a long way into not only powering our handheld devices, but also the wearables that will consume the market in the coming years.

Charge Your Phone in Thirty SecondsWith a goal to be on shelves in a couple of years, the Israeli research firm StoreDot has just posted a video showcasing their amazing rapid charge battery. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Yea, that Galaxy S4 just went from 27% battery life to a full charge in a little under thirty seconds, and will continue to charge itself even after it's removed from the charger. Amazingly enough, this technology was borne out of Alzheimer's research at Tel Aviv University.According to Doron Myerdorf, founder and CEO of StoreDot, "during that research, specific amino acids were isolated and we managed to use those amino acids and peptides to create nanocrystals." The nanocrystals have special properties that allow for use in various devices, such as batteries. So while things like "Extreme power saving mode" are great and all (and usable today), I'm much more excited about the future of battery and charging technology. It hasn't kept pace with graphic and processing technology, but it's about to make some serious leaps.Phone batteries image via The Atlantic

How To: Copy/Paste Multiple Items with Your Nexus 5's Clipboard

How To: Copy/Paste Multiple Items with Your Nexus 5's Clipboard
Text input on a touchscreen device is constantly evolving. From early beginnings of pecking out each individual character to today's predictive text and gesture keyboards, we've already come a long way.But text selection is still lacking. If you've ever tried to quote multiple sources while responding to someone on an internet forum, you've surely been frustrated with your device's basic copy-and-paste functionalities. Switching back and forth between apps to copy various bits of texts is bothersome—even more so than performing the same task on a computer. The development team over at Diigo feels our pain. Their new Android app, Copy Bubble, looks to streamline this nagging process and allow you to copy as many things as you want, then have access to them all in your clipboard. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Installing Copy BubbleDiigo has made their app available for free on the Google Play Store, so hit up this link to head directly to the install page.

Step 2: Getting to Know Copy BubbleWhen you first launch Copy Bubble, you'll be greeted by a feature tour. It lets you know that any text you copy will automatically be added to your Copy Bubble, which can then be accessed later. After that, a quick trip into Settings will reveal the few customizable options. In here, you can set whether you want the app to start automatically or if you want the bubble to auto-hide when you're using it. You can even disable Copy Bubble's ongoing notification, but that's not recommended since the notification is what keeps it from being cleared from memory in certain situations.

Step 3: Using Copy BubbleCopy Bubble is an ever-present circle that resides on the edge of your screen. It remains visible in any app, but the "eye" button in the ongoing notification allows you to hide it or bring it back up. You can move Copy Bubble as you see fit, but it locks itself onto the nearest edge of the screen when you let go.

Copying Text with Copy BubbleTo start copying and pasting like a pro, just select some text and hit the Copy button that appears up top. You'll immediately notice that the counter inside Copy Bubble registers your copied text. Then, just copy anything else you'd like to paste later. The counter registers the new content with a "2", letting you know that there are two items available to be pasted. In my experiments, I was able to copy over 20 things to Copy Bubble before I gave up trying to max it out, so it could potentially be endless.

Pasting Text with Copy BubbleWhen you're ready to paste your selections, just head to the text field in question. Hit the Copy Bubble button, then tap the text that you'd like to paste. Next, simply use Android's built-in paste functionality to populate the field with your selected text. You can then repeat this as needed by heading back into Copy Bubble and tapping any other text you've selected.Overall, it's a handy app that brings functionality to an area where Android is lacking. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section below.

Review: Now You Can Relive the '00s with Crazy Taxi on Mobile for Free

Review: Now You Can Relive the '00s with Crazy Taxi on Mobile for Free
Crazy Taxi continues to be a favorite among gamers of all ages, from those who played the game in late-'90s arcades to those who discovered the game later on consoles. This weekend, Sega announced their mobile version of Crazy Taxi would now be available for free. What a time to be alive. So does the arcade classic still hold up in 2017? Let's find out.If you want to download the game before reading this review, you can install it from the iOS App Store for iPhone or Google Play Store for Android.

GameplayCrazy Taxi Classic plays and acts much like the original. Both arcade and original modes are here, giving the player options to play by arcade rules, or play in three, five, or ten-minute intervals. For complete beginners to the game (like myself), Crazy Taxi gives you a helpful instruction slideshow to get you acquainted with the controls. Not that there are many. Still, it's a useful way to pick up and play Crazy Taxi without being completely useless. For the uninitiated, Crazy Taxi has you play as one of four different cabbies. Your mission is to pick up passengers throughout the city and to take them to their various destinations, all while being mindful of the time limit. Along the way, you aim to make some extra money by performing combo moves and getting as close as possible to other cars. It's a simple game, but it can become very addicting.Arcade mode is where you should start. Original mode drops the player into a much larger map, where the guiding arrow becomes more of a distraction than a help. Arcade is a good way for beginners who don't know the map to get a grip on how to play.

ControlsBecause we're playing on mobile, Sega has included both touch controls and tilt controls. Usually, unless the game design is skewed one way or the other, this comes down to user preference. Personally, I stick to touch controls because I find most tilt controls to be too sensitive. While I feel Sega did a good job with the tilt controls here, I still feel like I have more control using the touch directions; I found myself crashing into walls way more often when steering my phone left and right. (Not to say that didn't happen with touch controls, too.) That's not to say tilt controls don't have their advantages here. I found that I had an easier time making some quick turns than I did when using the touch controls. For example, reversing becomes a lot easier with tilt controls. Maybe I'm taking my instincts from real-world driving into account, which doesn't translate to reversing with touch controls. Whatever the case, I got myself out of some sticky situations faster when tilting the phone. For the most part, however, I preferred touch controls.
iOS vs. AndroidThe iOS and Android versions play similarly. I played the game on an iPhone 7 and the Google Pixel and didn't notice many advantages of one over the other. Vibration works on both platforms, which is a cool feature missing from, say, a 3DS. I preferred the vibration on the iPhone to the Google Pixel, since the iPhone's vibration is a little more subtle than the Pixel's. Nothing game-changing, but I couldn't help but be a little distracted by the Pixel.

AdvertisementsNow, to address the elephant in the room. This game is now free, which means ads. And these ads don't seem to care much for subtleties. From the permanent ad-space on the main screen to timed popups throughout the game, the ads are pretty intrusive. Sega even thought ahead to those of us who play these kinds of games on Airplane mode in an effort to cut down on the ads. In order to play the free version of Crazy Taxi, you need to be connected to the internet at all times in order to play. A total bummer if you're trying to play in the subway, or, I don't know, on a freaking airplane. Better hope your flight has Wi-Fi. Luckily, there are no ads during the actual gameplay. This detail is crucial. Many "free" games put the ads at the top of your game, distracting the player from what's happening on screen. Crazy Taxi at least gives you the decency to spam you once your game has ended. That detail makes the ads somewhat bearable.Ads become particularly evident when playing the "Crazy Box" mode. Here, the game offers players short challenges that usually don't last longer than 15–30 seconds. The problem is that almost every time you finish or lose the challenge, you get slammed with a new ad. This ad-placement happens at the end of games in the arcade and original modes too, but because of how short these challenges are, you potentially see three to four ads a minute. I had a hard time gathering the patience to play more than three of these challenges before getting sick of the ads.
The Bottom LineIs the free game worth it? Absolutely. You get more than your fair share of fun before having to sit through 10–15 seconds of advertisements. That's worth the free game. Ads may damage the Crazy Box experience, but if you want to enjoy this feature fully, the full game is available as an in-app purchase for only $1.99 (iOS) or $3.99 (Android).Considering PS2 games retailed for $50 back in the early 2000s, $1.99 is kind of a steal. If you're like me and have some inexplicable aversion to purchasing mobile games, Crazy Taxi is perfectly playable without having to buy it.Gadget Hacks Score: 3/3 — Great game, worth a download! How To: Root Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Using ODIN for Windows (So Easy Your Grandma Can Do It)

Just like the recently rediscovered Star Wars ruins in the Tunisian desert, there are tons of hidden treasures in your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 just waiting to be unearthed. Image via fastcodesign.com Rooting enables you to install custom ROMs, exclusive features from other devices, add Wi-Fi tethering, overclock the CPU for faster speed, and many other customizations. In this guide, I'll be showing you how to root your Note 2 using a Windows computer, so you can begin the adventure that awaits.
Prerequisites to RootingBefore we get started, you'll need to make sure that your device is compatible with this rooting process. These are the models of the Galaxy Note 2 that will work:International (GT-N7100 / GT-N7105) AT&T (SGH-I317) T-Mobile (SGH-T889) Canadian models (starting with SGH-I317 or SGH-T889) You can find your model number either under the battery or in "About Device" at the bottom of the "Settings" menu. If your device is not listed above, do not use this rooting method. There's a good chance you'll brick it.You should also make sure to backup all your data before rooting, as there's always a possibility you'll lose it.

Rooting the Galaxy Note 2 (Windows)First, you'll need to put your device into download mode. Turn it off, then hold the Volume Down + Home + Power buttons until you see the screen below. Press the Volume Up button to continue. This will take you to ODIN download mode. Once you see the "Downloading..." screen, connect your Note 2 to your Windows computer via USB cable.Note: Your device is not actually downloading anything at this point. This just means it has successfully entered download mode. The next several steps will take place on your computer. If you don't already have it, download and install the Samsung USB Drivers. Now, download and unzip the GalaxyNote2Root.zip file. Open the ODIN program by double-clicking the odin3 v1.85.exe application file. In the ODIN program, you should see a yellow ID:COM box with a random number in it. If for some reason you don't see it, make sure your Samsung USB drivers are installed correctly and unplug your Note 2, then plug it back into your computer. Without changing any other settings, click on PDA under Files [Download] and find the cwm6-root-note2.tar. file. Select it and click on Start. From here, ODIN will flash the custom CWM Recovery. If it's successful, a green "PASS!" box will appear. When it finishes, your device will boot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery one time in order to install the SuperUser app and its binaries. Then, reboot again. Once your device finishes rebooting, you should find a new application called called SuperSU. Your Galaxy Note 2 is now rooted and ready for you to explore. Now, you can customize it with any ROM, kernel or mod you want, and finally have access to all those root-only apps in the Play Store. Be sure to share your favorites with us in the comments below.

Notifications sometimes come in bulk on Android—especially after booting up. While some of them are helpful or informative, most can be immediately dismissed as soon as they come in.The traditional way to adjust notification preferences, like blocking and priority, requires navigating to Settings -> Sounds & notifications -> App notifications, then selecting a particular app, but today I'll be showing you a shortcut that cuts out most of these steps, making the process much, much quicker. You will need to be running Android 5.0 Lollipop for this to work, so for now, this trick is limited to Nexus devices only. How To: Kick People Off Your Wi-Fi Network Using Your Nexus 7

How To: Kick People Off Your Wi-Fi Network Using Your Nexus 7
One thing I absolutely cannot stand is lag when I'm gaming. Every time I'm about to beat my killstreak record on Call of Duty, my internet connection drops and I'm a goner. It never fails. This usually happens because someone else on my Wi-Fi is streaming a movie or downloading a huge file.Yes, I could log in to my router from my computer and kick off everyone on my Wi-Fi, but that's too time-consuming, and what if I'm not on my own personal network? Thanks to my Nexus 7 and an app called WiFiKill by developer Bartosz Ponurkiewicz, creator of the famed FaceNiff app, there is an easier and faster way.WiFiKill lets you easily give people a "timeout" by kicking them off the network temporarily, and it's helpful for more than just games (e.g. Netflix streaming quality) and for more than just your own network.

How to Install WiFiKillIn order to acquire this app, you will need a rooted Nexus 7 or other rooted device running Android 4.0 or higher. You will also need the WiFiKill Downloader app, which lets you install different versions of WiFiKill, check for updates, and view the changelog.Once you have the Downloader app installed, open it up and select Download & install FREE version to test out the free version of WiFiKill. The free version has ads and lasts for only five minutes (hence the "timeout"), but that should be long enough for people to quit their attempts of reconnecting. The paid version is $6.00, removes ads, and disables Wi-Fi for any amount of time, which could be more helpful when you're on a public Wi-Fi network.

Step 1: Identify & Name DevicesWhen you first open the app, you'll be presented with a list of devices connected to your network and their IP addresses once you hit the Start button up top. Some of these addresses will have a vendor name next to them (i.e. "Apple, Inc."), but others won't. To weed out your own devices, you can just find out your IP address in your Wi-Fi or Internet settings on the device. It'll most likely be easier with your home Wi-Fi network, as you'll have fewer devices attached (I'm using my work network as an example). Once you've identified your own device (or a bandwidth hog), go ahead and label it for easy finding next time round. Tap on the IP address, then input the name where it says device name.

Step 2: Kill All ConnectionsAt the bottom of the page, select grab all then kill all if you want to kick everyone off Wi-Fi right off the bat. By grabbing a device, you will be able to view traffic and recently visited websites.Obviously, grabbing all will also kick you off whatever other devices you're using (e.g. Xbox, PlayStation, computer, etc.), so I recommend doing it on a case-by-case basis (see next step).

Step 3: Kill Individual ConnectionsKicking everyone off at once could raise suspicions, especially if you're the only one left with a working connection. Instead, kick off the bandwidth hogs on an individual level by selecting their device(s), selecting grab, then kill. This process can seem diabolical, but some of us will go through great lengths to have the internet all to ourselves. Enjoy it for free, or upgrade to unleash its full capability. And yes, you can use this in some of the more open public Wi-Fi hotspots (these days, most public ones are protected from these types of antics) and kick people off, but just remember to disable the application before you leave.

Another easy method uses a coin cell battery, a single LED and some tape. Sometimes called "LED throwies" because people used to add a magnet and toss them at metal bridges (please don't do this…it's littering, and e-waste materials don't belong in landfills or the street). LED is short for light-emitting diode.

LED YO-YO SIDE CAPS Spin-activated lights for your butterfl y. By Eric Chu There aren't many low-budget ways to customize one's yo-yo. There I recently read a post about spin-activated LED side caps that fit into the side of yo-yos. They are low-cost ($6) and look very cool; a perfect customizing add-on for any yo-yo. Unfortunately, they only come in one size, thus only fitting a few yo-yos. I thought it'd be a fun project to make my own set (and it was!).
