With Google now offering as near to perfect an Android experience as we've had so far, OEMs that want to keep selling smartphones in a world flooded with them will need to start working for the privilege.The new Pixel phones exemplify Google's new hardware philosophyâ€”to do it right, you have to do it yourself. Even though the Pixel and Pixel XL were manufactured by HTC, everything was designed and built by Google in order to take Android devices to the next level, as Google spokesperson Iska Saric told WIRED:We want to continue to see the entire Android ecosystem thrive. With these new phones, we aim to provide the best Google phone experience, which we hope will also contribute to future innovation and development of the ecosystem.
â€” Iska Saric, Google (via WIRED)No doubt that's true, and by positioning the Pixel devices at the premium tier (they start at $649), Google is sending a clear message to OEMs. Just because Android is open and available, doesn't mean it should be slotted haphazardly into some cheap plastic brick to get your brand into the smartphone game. There's a good reason why Apple is winning. Apple's customers know what they're getting when they invest (considerably) in a phone. Detractors might argue that what they're getting is just a fancy metal box and a stone-simple OS, but the point is that it's consistently fancy and consistently stone-simple. Back in iOS 7, all of your photos were stored in the "Camera Roll" album, easily found in the "Albums" tab. That album is now gone, and two new albums have taken its placeâ€”"Recently Added" and "Recently Deleted."Unlike the older Camera Roll album, Recently Added only shows photos and videos from the last 30 daysâ€”and that's it. If you don't have any media that's older than 30 days on your iPad or iPhone, then you probably thought that Recently Added was just the Camera Roll renamed, but it's not, and you would have figured it out eventually.All of your older photos and videos are still stored on your device and available via Photos, just in a different place. Instead of the Albums tab, head into the "Photos" tab. This will open the "Moments" view, where images and videos are split into actual dates. For a broader view, tap "Collections" on the top left. We are used to navigating with our smartphones, which is extremely convenient, unless we're out of range for any type of data connection.So, instead of resorting to confusing maps or finding your way home by reading the sky, here's the trick to saving offline maps in Google Maps on Android and iOS devices. We've previously shown you how to do this, but the Google Maps app has changed a lot since then. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Choose Your LocationEnter a location of interest and bring it up on the map. Next, tap the microphone icon in the search bar and say "Ok maps" to initiate the saving process. Alternatively, you can also type out "Ok maps" and hit "Search," or simply scroll down to "Save map to use offline" after tapping in the search box.

Step 2: Save the Offline MapA new screen will pop up asking if you'd like to "Save this map?" Adjust the area by zooming in or out, then name it and tap "Save." The map will save an area up to 50km x 50km in distance.

Step 3: Access Your Saved LocationOnce you've saved your location, enter the Maps settings and select "Your places." You will see your offline maps towards the bottom of the page. With our internet-connected devices growing in number by the year, it would be nice if they could somehow all be interconnected. This is becoming commonplace for our tablets, smartphones, and laptops, but our media streaming boxes still seem to be isolated in their own little worlds.Developer Christian Fees has finally broken this trend with his newest app. It allows Android users to mirror all of their notifications over to their Nexus Player or Android TV device, so you can have all of the latest news without even leaving your couch.

Step 1: Install the App on Your Android Phone or TabletFrom your handheld device, head to the Google Play Store and install Notifications for Android TV. There are in-app purchases available, but we won't need any of those for this guide.

Step 2: Configure the App on Your Phone or TabletWhen you first launch the app on your Android phone or tablet, you'll be asked to choose your preferred language. When you're done here, tap "Next" to move on. After that, the app will scan for any Android TV devices that are connected to the same network. So make sure your phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Nexus Player, and when the app automatically detects your set-top box, tap the "Next" button. From here, you'll be prompted to install this same app on your Nexus Player.

Step 3: Install the App on Your Nexus PlayerFrom any web browser on your computer, make sure you're logged in with your Google account, then head to the Notifications for Android TV page on Google Play again. Click the "Install" button, then make sure to select your Nexus Player from the drop-down menu, and the app will be remotely installed within a few minutes. On your Nexus Player, go ahead and run the app once to finalize setup. When you do, you'll be informed that setup is complete on your Android TV device, and a little more work will need to be done on your handheld device.

Step 4: Enable the Notification Service on Your Phone or TabletBack on your handheld device, tap the "Refresh" button, and Notifications for Android TV should recognize that you installed its sister app on your Nexus Player. Tap "Next" at this point. From here, you'll be asked to enable the app's notification listener service, so tap "Setup Notification Access," then press "Continue" on the popup. On the following screen, tick the box next to the "Notifications for Android TV" entry, then press "OK" on the popup. When you're done with that, head back to the app and tap "Next," then press "Start" and "Continue" to finalize setup.

Step 5: View Notifications on Your Nexus PlayerFrom now on, when you receive a notification on your handheld device, it will be mirrored over to your Nexus Player. This is even true when you're watching a video or using an app, so you'll never miss a notification. It adds three swipe gestures to the bottom edge of your screen that will give you instant access to the existing Back, Home, and Recent apps (aka Overview) functions, opening the door for you to remove the on-screen buttons altogether. Afterwards, tap the three-dot menu button and select "Save Changes." Now all that's left to do is reboot your phone. When you get back up, your on-screen navigation buttons will be gone. To navigate through your phone, just swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen where each of the buttons used to be.
