News: From Backpack Transceiver to Smartphone: A Visual History of the Mobile Phone

News: From Backpack Transceiver to Smartphone: A Visual History of the Mobile Phone

Remember what life was like before your iPhone? Before there were palm-sized smartphones with seemingly endless features, there were phones like Motorola's RAZR that peaked with its embedded camera. Before that, there were simple flip phones with texting capabilities, bulky two-pound Gordon Gekkos—even briefcase phones.Mobile phones have come a long way in the last seventy years, so be thankful yours fits in your pocket. Maybe one day it will even be able to bend like a piece of thin plastic. Maybe you won't even have to touch it, doing all of your multitasking from cellular implants. But seventy years ago, you'd be humping a 25-pound 'portable' phone on your back, with very limited 5-mile range.Below, a visual history marking the accomplishments of mobile phones, from military applications to mobile apps. Alexander Graham Bell would surely be proud. Not quite what you would consider a mobile phone, the SCR-194 and 195 were the first portable AM radios, produced by the U.S. Army Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories in Fort Monmouth, NJ. Considered the first "walkie talkie", these devices weighed roughly 25 pounds and had a 5-mile range. They were widely used for infantry battalion and company intercommunication during World War II.Next came the SCR-300 radio transceiver, developed for the U.S. Military by Motorola. This time a portable FM radio, it weighed anywhere from 32 to 38 pounds with a 3-mile range. It replaced the SCR-194 and 195 with nearly 50,000 units used in World War II by Allied Forces.Motorola produced the first "handie talkie" for the U.S., labeled SCR-536. 130,000 units were manufactured and used during the war. Back to AM, this handheld version shed the fat off the previous two transceivers, weighing only 5 pounds. But its land range was only 1-mile (3 miles over water).Moving away from military-grade portable radios, we get to the mobile radio telephones (or 0G)...Bell System introduced the first commercial mobile telephone service, called the Mobile Telephone System (MTS). The original equipment was large, weighing 80 pounds (not quite what you'd call mobile) with limited calling bands available from AT&T. The service wasn't cheap either—costing $30 a month (roughly $330 today) with additional per call charges. Not really intended for regular Joe Blows, these devices were used by utilities, truck fleet operators, and reporters.Ericsson's Mobile System A (MTA) was the first partly automatic mobile system for automobiles. First used by Sweden, the unit weighed a whopping 88 pounds. Again, "mobile" is kind of a misnomer, considering it's equivalent to almost 300 iPhones! With the adaption of Bell's newer pre-cellular Improved Mobile Telephone Service (IMTS), auto owners saw lighter, more advanced mobile car phones with push buttons. This one by Motorola weighed 40 pounds, half as much of the original units from the '40s. Over the years, they managed to get down into the 20-pound range. But they never managed to get into the hands of Joe Blow, with a still-hefty price and rationed service throughout the nation. With a prototype of the DynaTAC (DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) portable phone, former Motorola Vice President Martin Cooper made the first private, practical mobile phone call in a non-vehicle setting. Who'd he call? His rival at Bell Labs, Joel S. Engel. With the impressive size of the DynaTAC prototype, it's disappointing to see Nokia's Mobira Senator weighing in at 22 pounds. It launched during the world's first fully automatic international cellular service—NMT—the first-generation (1G) of mobile communications.10 years later after the prototype, Motorola's DynaTAC cellular phone was made available to the public, weighing under 2 pounds, but costing nearly $4,000 (almost $9,000 today)—which is why it was strictly for the Gordon Gekkos of the world. It worked on AMPS, North America's first 1G analog service, launched first by Ameritech in Chicago.Back to larger mobile devices, the Mobira Talkman brought longer talk time at cheaper costs. The DynaTAC could only manage 60 minutes of talk time, but this miniature beast gave hours or voice-to-voice communication.Next up was Motorola's MicroTAC, which introduced the first flip phone design. The hardware was place in a hinged section of the phone, reducing the phone's size when not in use. It was truly the world's first pocket phone. The Motorola International 3200 became the first hand-sized digital mobile phone that used 2G digitally encrypted technology (unveiled in 1991 as GSM).Perhaps the world's first smartphone, IBM Simon was a mobile phone, pager, fax machine and PDA, all rolled into one. It included a calendar, address book, clock, calculator, notepad, email, gamers and a touchscreen with QWERTY keyboard. It originally sold for $899, which would be just over $1,300 nowadays. You may remember Simon from Sandra Bullock's The Net.Car phones remained popular, despite their smaller pocket-sized versions, but Motorola's Bag Phone (2900) was the car phone to have due to its long talk time, great battery life and superior signal range. They first worked with 1G networks, but eventually crossed over into 2G territory.Still shrinking the line of TACs, Motorola unveiled the first clamshell mobile phone with StarTAC. It improved the folding feature by collapsing in half, which is why it's called "clamshell"—because it resembles a clam opening and closing shut. It ran on 1G networks, but eventually crossed over into the world of 2G.It's said to be inspired by the communicator from the original Star Trek series. The Simon was good, but the Nokia 9000 Communicator was what really brought on the smartphone era. It was the first cell phone that could also be called a mini-computer (though it had limited web access). When opened, the longways clamshell design revealed an LCD screen and full QWERTY keyboard—the first on a mobile phone. The Nokia 8810 was the first cell phone without an external antenna whip or stub-antenna, possibly paving the way for iPhones and DROIDs. It also made mobile phones more aesthetically pleasing, with its sliding keypad cover. One of the most popular mobile phones in history was the Nokia 3210, with over 160 million sold. It was one of the first to allow picture messages, but only preinstalled ones like "Happy Birthday", and was one of the first to be marketing towards young people.Nokia's 7110 was the first cell phone to incorporate Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), which gave mobile users web access for simple devices—a stripped-down, mostly text version, but a revolutionary step for mobile internet.GeoSentric was responsible for the world's first mobile phone and a GPS navigator integrated in one product—the Benefon Esc! It was splashproof, greyscale, and allowed users to load maps to trace position and movement. In Japan, Kyocera's Visual Phone (VP-201) was the first to have a built-in camera, but it was designed primarily as a peer-to-peer video phone, as opposed to Sharp's the next year...Sharp was first to the camera phone market with their J-SH04 (J-Phone), released by J-Mobile in Japan. It offered a mere 0.1 megapixel resolution. Some like to give credit to Olympus for being the first camera to transmit digital images over a cellular network with their Deltis VC-1100. Others prefer Philippe Kahn's story of rigging up a camera to a cell phone with wires to send images of his newborn baby. But the J-SH04 was the first commercially available cell phone to have an integrated CCD sensor, with the Sha-Mail (Picture-Mail) infrastructure. This was the start of what we know as MMS.Not too far from the J-Phone, the Sanyo 5300 from Sprint was the first camera phone sold in North America.RIM's BlackBerry 5810 wasn't the first BlackBerry device, but it was the first to incorporate a mobile phone into their popular brand of data-only devices. Professionals who needed immediate access to their emails and schedules were the main target for RIM, but the built-in phone made it appealing to everyone. The downside? No speaker or microphone. One of the first phones to equip a fully functional web experience and integrate an instant messaging client (AIM) was the Danger Hiptop in 2002, later re-branded the T-Mobile Sidekick. It's messaging features and keyboard made it one of the best selling phones in the deaf community. Also new was an LCD screen that rotated and flipped to reveal a large QWERTY keyboard.Perhaps surpassing the BlackBerry achievements, Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition started spreading across PDAs like wildfire, including the HP Jornada 928 Wireless Digital Assistant, combining the best of the PDA with integrated wireless voice and data capabilities. It was a nice addition to the older Windows Mobile Classic devices, which essential ran a mini-version of Windows XP.Another PDA adding phone support was Palm's Treo 180 by Handspring, running the Palm OS.The next highly popular device was a camera phone called the Motorola RAZR, which was first marketed as a "fashion" phone in 2004, selling 50 million units by mid-2006. It helped give cell phones a new look, which were getting stale with the same ol' boring designs. Though nothing revolutionary, its looks did more than impress. The first Palm smartphone to operate outside of the Palm OS was the Treo 700w, powered by Windows Mobile. It was a great alternative for users who needed access to Microsoft software on the go.Believe it or not, the iPhone wasn't the first cell phone to have Apple's iTunes music player integrated. It was the Motorola ROKR E1, but it only could manage 100 songs at a time—not quite the same as an iPhone...In 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the Apple iPhone, a revolutionary touchscreen smartphone. It wasn't the first smartphone, but it was the first to get the user interface right, eventually adapting 3G technology (which was already available since 2001).The first smartphone to run Google's Android OS was the HTC Dream slider smartphone. It featured a QWERTY keyboard, full HTML web browser, Gmail, YouTube and more, and paved the way for phones like the Nexus One and Motorola DROID.The HTC EVO 4G from Sprint was the first cellular phone to meet 4G standards, running on the WiMAX network. It was sold powered by Android 2.1 and had one of the largest touchscreen displays, an 8MP camera, HD video capture, HDMI output, Mobile Hotspot capability and HTC Sense.

News: Samsung, Not Apple, Makes the Best Social Media Phones (& We Can Prove It)

We recently set out to find the best phones for people whose primary usage revolves around social media apps like Facebook and Instagram. Samsung, Apple, and Google were the three brands that made our top five, and while the latter only had one finalist, the two bigger OEMs had a pair of phones each. What struck us, however, was that Samsung's phones edged out Apple's not once, but twice.Let me be clear here: The two Apple phones that made our list are excellent choices for social media. They offer great performance on all social media apps, especially Snapchat (more on that later), and have excellent cameras for both photos and videos. However, the two entries from Samsung offer more. Both provide extra features which improve the overall experience and help you get the most out of your favorite social media apps. And while Samsung isn't perfect, based on our testing, they are the social media phone of choice.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Phones for Social Media Addicts

Why the Galaxy Note 9 Topped Our ListThe Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is one of the most complete phones ever released. After the 2016 fiasco with the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung was conservative with its successor, the Note 8, as they tried to regain the trust of the public and correct any issues they may have missed. After a year without issues, Samsung once again pushed the limits of fitting the best technology available into one phone package, a hallmark of the Galaxy Note brand. The result is this year's Note 9, and it's because of the phone's completeness that it excels in many areas, including those that appeal most to social media users and influencers. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks It starts with the camera system. Both rear cameras have optical image stabilization, making low-light photography much better and shaky videos a thing of the past. The prominent new feature of this year's camera is the variable aperture, which changes the diameter of the camera opening to adjust for different lighting scenarios. The primary camera will automatically switch between apertures of either f/1.5 or f/2.4, depending the situation. While the front camera has a fixed aperture, it's the widest of any mainstream phone at f/1.7.Speaking of video, have you seen those epic super slow-motion videos on social media? More than likely, they were taken with a Samsung device. All three of Samsung's latest flagship phones include support for super-slow-motion video (960 fps at 720p). The rest of the competition is limited to 240 fps at 1080p, which the Note 9 can also do if you'd prefer higher resolution. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks As you know, a great camera is nothing without adequate storage. With the Galaxy Note 9, you can have up to an unprecedented 1 TB worth of storage. You need the 512 GB variant and a 512 GB microSD card to accomplish this, but the result is enough disk space to put many laptops to shame. And, as bigger microSD cards come out, the Galaxy Note 9 will be able to take advantage, with support for up to 2 TB microSD cards. Then there is Dual Messenger. With this feature enabled, you can clone a social media app and sign in to each instance of the app with a different account, thus allowing you to receive notifications for each account at the same time. And this feature is built into the Samsung Experience UI, so no jailbreaking or rooting is required. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks It's this combination of features that allowed the Galaxy Note 9 to top Apple's best offering, the iPhone XS Max. But Samsung's domination doesn't stop there. Both Samsung and Apple managed to have two phones on our list, and it's with the second phone's performance that we find Samsung is the OEM of choice for social media users. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks

A Great Second Choice: The Galaxy S9+Ranked third on our list was the Samsung Galaxy S9+. This device was a later entry in our testing, as it's the oldest phone on our list (it's been 10 months since release). But after going through our testing, we realized just how good of a phone it was thanks to its similarities to the Galaxy Note 9. And while the iPhone XR is amazing choice for social media users, when compared to the S9+, it's really not close. If you love the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy S9+ is virtually the same device, but cheaper. The screen's a bit smaller, the camera a tiny bit worse, the battery is a bit smaller, and there's no stylus — that pretty much sums up the differences between these two phones. But none of these shortcomings hinder your experience on Instagram, for example, if you decide to choose the Galaxy S9+ over the Galaxy Note 9. The latter is better, but not by much.It has the same camera on paper as the Galaxy Note 9, with dual 12 MP rear cameras and an 8 MP front-facing camera. It supports the same super-slow-motion video and variable aperture as well. However, as DxOMark's testing shows, it doesn't perform quite as well in real-world situations, managing a score 3 points lower in both photo and video when compared to the Galaxy Note 9. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks With all the photos you'll be taking for social media, you might keep some on a cloud storage service like Google Photos. If you want to upload any of these photos to, say, Facebook, iPhones require you to open the cloud storage app first, then share your photos to the Facebook app from there. However, Android devices like the Note 9 and S9+ let you access the cloud services directly while in the social media app, saving you time and unnecessary touches.Samsung phones also make sure you get to every notification as soon as they arrive. Thanks to the Always-on Display feature, you don't even have to wake your phone to check for new alerts — your display will remain on even after you turn off the screen. To conserve battery, it will turn off all but a few pixels where it will display relevant information such as the time, date, and any new notifications. And thanks to its OLED display, this feature has a minimal impact on the battery. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks Both Galaxy phones also have a notification LED. This light will blink various colors whenever an alert arrives, which you can customize to your liking. This way, even when your phone's on silent or you happen not to feel the vibration, you can instantly see the blinking light and know that a new notification has hit your feed. And best of all, for those who prefer a small smartphone, you can use the Samsung Galaxy S9 with its smaller overall body, and nearly all of the same specs as its bigger counterpart.

What About Snapchat?Snapchat is objectively worse on Android. The sixth most popular social media app (as of July 2018) has cut some corners on the Android operating system, and the result was a laggy and slow app which took awful pictures. Snapchat took their first big step to fix this with an overhaul of the app in 2018, but it didn't fix all the problems. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks Previously, Snapchat decided it was easier to use screengrabs of the viewfinder than to use the camera hardware to take photos. The reason being was since Android has so much variability (such as users running older software, various screen sizes, etc.), instead of trying to optimize the app for all the different types of phones, they could use the screengrabs which would work on all phones. As a result, pictures were pretty terrible, and many Android users left the platform. To fix the problem, Snapchat "upgraded" to Camera1 API to start using the camera modules on phones and improve picture quality. But this API was last updated in 2008 and has been replaced with Camera 2 API on almost all current Android devices. So while we welcome the change, it still not as good as it needs to be.I say all this to let you know that while we agree Snapchat is still worse on Samsung phones than on iPhones, it is getting better. And while Snapchat's popularity is undeniable, it is an outlier and doesn't define Samsung's performance on the other social media apps. All three current flagship Samsung devices (S9, S9+, and Note 9) will provide you the best experience on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and much more. Notifications will not be missed thanks to the Always-on Display and notification LED. Both phones let you take great photos and have more than enough storage for ones which don't "make the cut." And both will let you share from both the internal storage and cloud storage, right from the app. What do you think about Samsung devices topping our list? How To: Get Android-Style Lock Screen Shortcuts to Favorite Apps on Your iPhone

How To: Get Android-Style Lock Screen Shortcuts to Favorite Apps on Your iPhone

There are countless mods and apps for Android devices that give them an iOS-style look, but maybe it's about time we take some notes from Android, especially when it comes to the iOS 7 lock screen. The lock screen on your iPhone should have more options than what Apple allows, and to that end, we've shown you a few tweaks that can help enhance it, like changing the "slide to unlock" text or applying a rising time bars theme, but those tweaks did little for actual functionality. Now we have JellyLock7, the Android-like lock screen that gives us instant access to up to five apps of our choosing. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
To get started, make sure you have a jailbroken iPhone, then head to Cydia to search for and install JellyLock7.

Fine Tune Your PreferencesAfter installation, head to your device's Settings to set up the app. By enabling Disable Default Unlock, we can disable the sliding gesture without removing our passcode, making sure to retain that security measure. Other options include Appearance, like changing colors and blurring backgrounds.

Add Apps to Your LockscreenSimply select App Shortcuts and begin selecting as many as five of your favorite apps that you want available from your lock screen. If security isn't an issue for you, enable Skip Passcode to bypass your passcode and launch straight into your selected application. How To: Download IPA Files for the iOS Apps on Your iPhone

How To: Download IPA Files for the iOS Apps on Your iPhone
Apple used to make it super easy to get the IPA version of any app on your iPhone just by syncing the device with iTunes, but ever since iTunes 12.7, that's no longer possible. Now, whenever you need to dig into an IPA file, whether it's to reverse engineer it or simply to look for the URL scheme name for Workflow or app icon customization, you'll need to use another Apple app on your Mac.The app in question is called Apple Configurator 2, and it's available for free the Mac App Store. It's primarily used by schools and businesses to install mobile device management profiles on iOS devices and to quickly configure a large number of devices at once with the data, apps, and settings of their choosing. But you can also use it to update your iPhone, rearrange icons on your home screen, and more.Don't Miss: Always-Updated List of iOS App URL Scheme Names For this guide, we'll just be focusing on getting the IPA files of apps installed on your iPhone. Once you've installed Apple Configurator 2 on your macOS system (sorry, there is no Windows version of this tool), you can use the steps below to download and save IPAs on your computer. However, this will only help you download IPAs of apps that have updates available for them that you haven't installed yet. That means it could be a waiting game since you'll have to wait until an update comes out (if one ever does) for the app you want an IPA for before using the steps below.

Step 1: Disable Automatic Updates (Optional)To take full advantage of this method, you should disable automatic updates on your iPhone so that the app you need the IPA file for won't update on its own. If it does, you'll have to wait until the next update comes out to use Apple Configurator 2 to get the IPA file. On your iPhone, open up the Settings app, select "iTunes & App Store," then make sure "Updates" is toggled off. I also suggested turning off Wi-Fi on your iPhone right before following the rest of the steps below, that way it's unlikely apps will update on their own at all. I've had automatic updates turned off and still had apps update on their own, so turning off Wi-Fi temporarily could help in these cases when it's not working properly.

Step 2: Log into Your Apple AccountOpen up the Apple Configurator 2 application, select "Account" from the menu bar up top, then choose "Sign In." In the popup, enter the Apple ID that matches what your iPhone is using, then hit the "Sign In" button. Next, enter the password for the account, then hit the "Sign In" button one more time, and that's it for this step.

Step 3: Connect Your iPhoneNow just connect your iPhone to your Mac using its USB cable, then "Trust" the connection from your iPhone if it's not already trusted. You'll need to enter your iPhone's passcode to finish the trusting process.Don't Miss: How to Untrust Computers Your iPhone Connected To

Step 4: Update the AppsIn the Apple Configurator 2 app, select your iPhone that pops up, then click on the "Update" button in the app's top menu of options. This will provide a popup that will ask you to update all of the apps that need updating. Click on "Update."If you don't want to download IPA files for all of the apps that need to be updated, use the drop-down to select "Only some apps" instead, then uncheck the apps you don't need before clicking "Update."

Step 5: Locate the IPA FilesOnce the updates have concluded, you'll have to dig into your user library files to find them. The easiest way to do this is to open up your Finder, select "Go" from the menu bar, then "Go to Folder" (or just use the Command-Shift-G shortcut instead). In the box that pops up, paste the below directory path inside, then click on the "Go" button and you should be taken right there.~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/Library/Caches/Assets/TemporaryItems/MobileApps Alternatively, you can select "Go" from the menu bar, then choose "Library." If you don't see "Library," hold down the Option key. If you've made the "Library" folder on your Mac unhidden forever, just use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-L to jump there. Then, go to Group Containers –> K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator –> Library -> Caches -> Assets -> TemporaryItems -> MobileApps.Once you're in the "Mobile Apps" temporary folder, click on the folder within it (or any of the folders within it, if you see more than one). Each one of the randomly numbered folders within it will be an app, so just browse each of those folders until you see the IPA file hidden inside of the app you're looking for.

Step 6: Copy the IPAs Somewhere ElseThe folder that you're in for Apple Configurator 2 is a temporary one, meaning it could disappear after a certain period of time, after you close Apple Configurator 2 down, or even after you restart your computer. To make sure they don't disappear, copy (Command-C) the files, then paste them (Command-V) into another folder on your "Desktop," in "Documents," or wherever else you want. And that's all there is to it. You know how IPA files for the app you need. Now you can turn them into ZIP files (just by changing .ipa to a .zip extension), unzip it, then start browsing the files contained within for what you need. For instance, if you need a deep link URL scheme name, you'll have to open the app package contents, then hunt for the PLIST file that has the URL types listed.Don't Miss: How to Install Modded & Unofficial Apps on Your iPhone by Sideloading with Cydia ImpactorFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Get Free Internet on Your Laptop from Your Phone

Tethering your Android phone basically turns it into a mobile hotspot, allowing you to funnel a 3G or 4G internet connection from your phone into your PC or laptop via USB. As you might expect, phone carriers brought the hammer down in an effort to stop users from getting around the fees they charge to normally allow you to do this.Luckily, the FCC has stepped in and has made Verizon stop its block on tethering apps. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile users are unfortunately unaffected by this ruling, but if you have a Verizon plan (or you think that your carrier won't find out, which is likely), here's how you can easily turn your phone into an internet hotspot.
Step 1: Activate USB DebuggingGo into your Android phone's menu and select Settings --> Applications --> Development. In that window, check the box that says USB Debugging.
Step 2: Download PdaNetGo to the Google Play marketplace (previously the Android Market) and run a search for PdaNet, or just click here. Download and install that app.On the PC or laptop you want to give internet access to, go to the PdaNet website and download the appropriate free PdaNet version for your operating system.Note: PdaNet is free, but limits secure browsing. You can purchase the full version right now for $15.95.

Step 3: Connect Your Phone to Your ComputerConnect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Then run the PdaNet app on your phone and choose Enable USB Tether. The app will begin running as a background service. On your computer, there will now be a small phone symbol in your system tray. Right-click on that and hit Connect to finish the tether. Image via androidauthority.com You should now have 3G or 4G internet access on your computer. Be careful how much data you use though, as your carrier may become suspicious if you are downloading an extreme amount.
PdaNet on the iPhone? If you want to use PdaNet on your iPhone, you're going to have to jailbreak the device, since Apple hasn't allowed PdaNet into the iTunes App Store because it "avoids your carrier's tether plan". But now thanks to the FCC's ruling, it might finally make an appearance.

How To: Automatically Turn on Low Power Mode During 'Do Not Disturb' to Save Battery

How To: Automatically Turn on Low Power Mode During 'Do Not Disturb' to Save Battery
Low Power Mode can go a long way in preserving your iPhone's battery life in a pinch. It can be set manually or appear as an option once your battery levels dip to 20 and 10 percent. If you have a jailbroken device, you can take Low Power Mode a step further by having it automatically turn on whenever using Do Not Disturb. When enabled, LowPowerDND, developed by KingPuffdaddi, will automatically kick in Low Power Mode anytime you manually enter Do Not Disturb, as well as when Do Not Disturb turns on automatically based on your preferences. The pairing helps automate Low Power Mode to reduce your iPhone's workload and preserve precious battery life whenever your device is not in use.Needless to say, this tweak offers huge benefits, like no longer needing to manually toggle Low Power Mode separate from Do Not Disturb, along with not having to charge your device as often which can be beneficial to its battery in the long run.Don't Miss: Three Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Phone's Battery Best of all, LowPowerDND is free and available within Cydia outright, which means no external repos to install. The tweak also will work in full once installed, saving you the time and hassle of having to manually play with various settings for its features to kick in, as you'll see below.

Step 1: Install LowPowerDNDOpen the Cydia app on your iPhone, tap the magnifying glass icon in the lower right, then input "lowpowerdnd" in the search field. Tap on the result of the same name when you see it, then tap "Install" in the upper right of the Details page to proceed with installing LowPowerDND. On the tweak's confirmation page, tap "Confirm" in the upper right to finalize the installation. The tweak will now be downloaded onto your device, so wait for the process to complete. Select "Restart SpringBoard" after it's done to respring your iPhone and finish installing LowPowerDND.

Step 2: Set Do Not Disturb (& Therefore Low Power Mode)LowPowerDND instantly takes effect once your iPhone resprings, and it will automatically enable Low Power Mode every time you enter into Do Not Disturb. So if you've scheduled Do Not Disturb to kick in every evening, Low Power Mode will work in conjunction with the feature to further conserve energy and kick you off the habit of overnight charging.

Step 3: Adjusting LowPowerDND's Settings (Optional)You can access LowPowerDND at any time by opening its tab that's found within your iPhone's Settings app. From there, you can disable the tweak outright by tapping on the toggle to turn it off. "Disable Low Power with DND" is also enabled by default, though you can switch it off if you'd like Low Power Mode to stay on whenever you exit out of Do Not Disturb. It's worth noting that LowPowerDND doesn't interfere with Low Power Mode in any way. Apple's feature will still function as it should, and you can turn it on manually without enabling Do Not Disturb in the process. It will also still appear as an option that you can enable when your battery level dips to 20 and 10 percent. Low Power Mode will also automatically disable whenever your iPhone's battery reaches 80 percent capacity while charging, unless you enabled LowPowerDND beforehand.Don't Miss: How to Jailbreak iOS 11 on Your iPhone — No Computer RequiredFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Grouped Notifications in iOS 12 Makes Browsing Alerts on Your iPhone Way Less Annoying
Apple's linear Notification Center has been scattershot at best since iOS 9 when we could group notifications by app. Without any type of grouping ability, the notification history becomes more of a nuisance of random alerts based on time alone, making it a treasure hunt to find the notification wanted. Now, iOS 12 has addressed this issue, bringing back groupings — with improvements.

Automatic GroupingWhile you had to opt into notifications grouped by apps back in iOS 9, you don't have to opt into anything in iOS 12 to get grouped alerts on your iPhone. By default, they are set to "Automatic" grouping for each application — neat, organized stacks that significantly declutter your Notification Center and lock screen.Don't Miss: How to Download iOS 12 on Your iPhone Right Now Grouped notifications on the lock screen in iOS 12. In this "Automatic" setting, contents from the same app are organized in separate groups, like two stacks of message notifications for two different contacts, three different stacks for three different news sources from the News app, and so forth. It definitely streamlines alerts, making the history a lot more convenient overall. Grouped notifications with the default "Automatic" setting in iOS 12.

By App GroupingIn addition to the default "Automatic" grouping, you have the option of grouping notifications "By App," just like you could in iOS 9 back in the day. This option could be found in each app's "Notifications" settings in the "Notification Grouping" section. Choosing "By App" for an individual app will lump all of its notifications into one single stack to make hunting for alerts even easier.Full Guide: Group Notifications by Apps Instead of Smart Stacks in iOS 12 The Apple News app's notifications grouped "By App" instead of "Automatic."

Going Back to iOS 11's Non-Grouping AlertsIn the "Notification Grouping" settings for each app, you can also choose "Off," which will return them to single ungrouped notifications based on time alone. Unfortunately, Apple failed to include a system-wide switch for grouping automatically, by app, or no grouping at all, so everything has to be done on a per-app basis. Hopefully, this will change in future iOS 12 updates. Apple News groupings off (left) as well as Dictionary and Flipboard (right).

Interacting with Notifications & GroupsExpanding the stack into individual notifications couldn't be any easier — just tap on the stack to reveal all the notifications in the group. From there, you can interact with each individual alert just like you could before. You can also tap "Show Less" to put them back in their stacked view.Tap on one or swipe right on it to open it, 3D Touch on it to peek into it, do a short left swipe to reveal the "View" option (which is the same as a 3D Touch peek) and "Clear" option, or do a long left swipe to clear it right away. These options also appear for groups, not just individual notifications, so you can perform actions for many alerts at once. However, 3D Touching or selecting "View" will just peek into the first notification. Opening a group only opens the first notification and leaves the others in your notifications history. Expanding/contracting notifications (left) and swipe gestures (right). Additionally, when you do a short left swipe on a notification or group of notifications, there will be the "Manage" button, which pulls up the "Instant Tuning" options where you can choose to deliver them quietly or more prominently, turn them off altogether, or jump into the app's notifications settings for fine-tuning. Instant Tuning also appears when you tap the ellipsis icon (•••) on a notification when peeking at it.Full Guide: How Instant Tuning Works for Notifications in iOS 12 Accessing the "Instant Tuning" menu via the ellipsis in peek mode. Overall, this new notifications system is a great addition to iOS. The groupings make it so much easier to stay organized, no matter how you like your alerts on the lock screen or in the history. Now we're just hoping for an option to group all apps by apps or automatic stacks versus just doing it one by one.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

You can quickly view your recent notifications from the Lock screen by picking up your iPhone * or waking your iPad. You can also do these things from the Lock Screen: Tap a single notification or a group of notifications to view all of them for that app. Swipe left over notifications to manage, view, or clear the notifications.

If your iPhone pairs to an Apple Watch, by design your paired iPhone does not chime when a new text arrives. Instead, Apple routes your alerts to your Apple Watch, especially when the iPhone is locked. As of now, there is no option to play a sound alert on BOTH your Apple Watch and your iPhone at the same time.

Safari 101: How to Block Cross-Site Tracking on Your iPhone

Safari 101: How to Block Cross-Site Tracking on Your iPhone
While it's easy enough to ask websites not to track your browsing activity in Safari, they do not have to honor your request. Plus, some of the third-party content providers that websites use can actually invasively track you across other websites. Thankfully, iOS 11 includes a way to minimize companies from tracking you across the web on your iPhone. Before we get to messing with the settings, let's talk a little about what cross-site scripting actually is. Not all content on a website you visit originates from that website. A lot will come from the website's partners and other third parties such as advertising firms. Those third parties will serve you information or ads from their own websites even though you are not visiting them directly.Don't Miss: How to Ask Websites Not to Track Your Browsing Activity in Safari These are what third-party cookies are for, but Safari has always blocked them in the past. However, third parties have always been able to get around this restriction by developing first-party cookies, ones meant to be used on the visited site only. The cookie is written using the advertiser's own domain, and they can access the information from that cookie and use it on other sites from a third-party context. To better explain this, let's say you visit a product on Amazon's website in Safari, a first-party cookie will save your search. Once you close the tab and visit another website, you may see ads for the product you were just looking at on Amazon because advertisers can read that first-party cookie from a third-party context. And those ads could follow you around for weeks until it's believed you're no longer interested.
How This All Plays Out in Safari on Your iPhoneApple's new feature in iOS 11, called Intelligent Tracking Prevention in WebKit, puts restrictions on how advertisers can use the data from that originating cookie. While it doesn't block all cross-site scripting, it does do it in an "intelligent" manner by using your browser's history and determining which sites can have access to which cookies and when.If you visit example.com, Safari will think that you're interested in the site, obviously, and it will allow cross-site tracking across other domains for 24 hours. Every time you visit example.com, the timer will be reset for another 24 hours. If you don't visit example.com again within 24 hours, Safari will believe you're no longer interested, and it will prevent cross-site tracking across other domains. The cookie will still remain on example.com but will be partitioned so it can't be used in a third-party context. This enables a cookie to still contain your login information so if you visit it again later, you can still login easily, without being tracked across websites all of the time. If you don't visit example.com again within 30 days, Safari will automatically delete or purge all of the cookies for that domain.

How to Check if Intelligent Tracking Prevention Is EnabledBy default, the Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature is already enabled in iOS 11. However, if you or someone else has been messing with the settings, you might want to verify that it's on. Or, if you ever decide you don't like the feature, you can, of course, opt out.Don't Miss: How to Clear Your Recently Closed Tabs List in Safari Head over to "Safari" in your Settings app, then scroll down to the Privacy & Security section. Here you will find "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking." If you want to use the feature, just make sure it's toggled on (green). While cross-site tracking prevention won't eliminate any privacy or security risks for you as you browse the web, you should feel comfortable knowing any would-be trackers have one less tool to use against you and the private information.Advertising firms fought hard to prevent Apple from including this feature in iOS 11, and since then, The Guardian reported in Jan. 2018 that Intelligent Tracking Prevention has cost ad companies millions of dollars since Sept. 2017.If you want to go even further, you could block all cookies in Safari, but that could make some websites not function as you're used to, and your login data won't be saved, as well as search history, which could actually be useful in some situations.Don't Miss: 24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right NowFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Easily View Your Current Cellular Data Usage on Your iPhone

How To: Easily View Your Current Cellular Data Usage on Your iPhone
If you can't afford an unlimited plan, you're limited to a certain amount of data each month on your iPhone. Even some unlimited data plans have carrier-imposed mobile data caps that throttle the user if they exceed them. Keeping track of your exact usage each day will help make sure you don't get billed more or throttled like a chump near the end of the month.Whether you have 1 GB or 10 GB of data to work with or even "unlimited," it's imperative that you know how to monitor your usage effectively so you don't accidentally exceed your limit and either incur unwanted charges or get stuck with slow connectivity and SD videos.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Disable for Maximum iPhone Security There are three main ways to keep tabs on your mobile data on your iPhone; Some users will be able to see the stats right in their Settings app, while everyone else will have to rely on their carrier's app and/or widget. There are also third-party apps such as My Data Manager that could help you out, but we'll just concentrate on the more official methods here.
Method 1: View Usage in the Settings AppThe easiest way to view your cellular data usage is within the Settings app, but this is only really helpful for users who have T-Mobile or some overseas carrier. If you have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, you won't be able to see your actual data usage, but you will still be able to work out a method for estimating your monthly data usage, though, it's easier to just use Method 2 or 3 below instead.

If You Have T-Mobile ...Go to "Cellular" from inside Settings, and look for your carrier's section. If you see an option called "Usage" under your carrier submenu, tap on that to see how much data you used for the current month out of your limit. It should also give you details about when it was last updated, as well as when your billing cycle ends.

If You Have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon ...In the "Cellular" settings, scroll down a bit to the Cellular Data section. Here, your iPhone will show you how much data you've used in the "Current Period" and on an app-to-app basis. You'll notice that during my current period, I've used 114 GB of data! That's because the usage stats don't reset themselves automatically at the end of the month. You have do this manually yourself at the start of every billing cycle if you even know when that is. Scroll down to the bottom and hit "Reset Statistics" at the beginning of your data cycle, and your iPhone will track how much mobile data you use.

Method 2: View Usage with Your Carrier's AppEach carrier has their own app, and it's likely that you already have it installed if you ever paid your bill from your iPhone before. If not, just head to the App Store and find yours by searching for the name of your carrier there. For example, Verizon's app for viewing your personal account information is called "My Verizon." Below is a quick list to the most common carrier apps.myAT&T myCricket MyMetro My Sprint Mobile T-Mobile U.S. Cellular – My Account My Verizon Using My Verizon as an example, once opened and logged in, it will immediately show how much data you or your family used and how much time is left in the month. By going to the "Data Hub" (either by tapping on the data remaining note or from the app's menu), you can see even more detailed information about the mobile data stats for the current month. Other carrier apps work similarly.

Method 3: View Usage with a WidgetSome carriers (not all) also have widgets available with their account management apps. Verizon is one of the few who provides one, but you can still check and make sure by following these steps.First, if you have an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, just press firmly on the app's icon on the home screen to bring up the menu. If you see a widget there, you know your carrier has one. If not, they don't. For those of you who do see a widget, it'll show all your stats right there. You can also tap "Add Widget" to add it to your Today View page that can be accessed from anywhere.Alternatively, you can view your Today View page by swiping right from the home screen, from the lock screen, or from the notification center, tap "Edit" at the bottom of it, then look for and add your carrier app's widget (if one exists) to the included side to see your widget everywhere. All three of these methods are effective, though the latter two are necessary for accurate tracking if you don't have T-Mobile. Still, the most important aspect of this is that you're able to easily see how you're doing with regards to data, to avoid overages or throttling. And you could always check out third-party solutions if you're not happy with these methods.Don't Miss: Save Cellular Data by Using Wi-Fi Only for FaceTime Audio & Video CallsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
