How To: Get Free Internet on Your Laptop from Your Phone

Tethering your Android phone basically turns it into a mobile hotspot, allowing you to funnel a 3G or 4G internet connection from your phone into your PC or laptop via USB. As you might expect, phone carriers brought the hammer down in an effort to stop users from getting around the fees they charge to normally allow you to do this.Luckily, the FCC has stepped in and has made Verizon stop its block on tethering apps. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile users are unfortunately unaffected by this ruling, but if you have a Verizon plan (or you think that your carrier won't find out, which is likely), here's how you can easily turn your phone into an internet hotspot.
Step 1: Activate USB DebuggingGo into your Android phone's menu and select Settings --> Applications --> Development. In that window, check the box that says USB Debugging.
Step 2: Download PdaNetGo to the Google Play marketplace (previously the Android Market) and run a search for PdaNet, or just click here. Download and install that app.On the PC or laptop you want to give internet access to, go to the PdaNet website and download the appropriate free PdaNet version for your operating system.Note: PdaNet is free, but limits secure browsing. You can purchase the full version right now for $15.95.

Step 3: Connect Your Phone to Your ComputerConnect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Then run the PdaNet app on your phone and choose Enable USB Tether. The app will begin running as a background service. On your computer, there will now be a small phone symbol in your system tray. Right-click on that and hit Connect to finish the tether. Image via androidauthority.com You should now have 3G or 4G internet access on your computer. Be careful how much data you use though, as your carrier may become suspicious if you are downloading an extreme amount.
PdaNet on the iPhone? If you want to use PdaNet on your iPhone, you're going to have to jailbreak the device, since Apple hasn't allowed PdaNet into the iTunes App Store because it "avoids your carrier's tether plan". But now thanks to the FCC's ruling, it might finally make an appearance.

How To: Automatically Turn on Low Power Mode During 'Do Not Disturb' to Save Battery

How To: Automatically Turn on Low Power Mode During 'Do Not Disturb' to Save Battery
Low Power Mode can go a long way in preserving your iPhone's battery life in a pinch. It can be set manually or appear as an option once your battery levels dip to 20 and 10 percent. If you have a jailbroken device, you can take Low Power Mode a step further by having it automatically turn on whenever using Do Not Disturb. When enabled, LowPowerDND, developed by KingPuffdaddi, will automatically kick in Low Power Mode anytime you manually enter Do Not Disturb, as well as when Do Not Disturb turns on automatically based on your preferences. The pairing helps automate Low Power Mode to reduce your iPhone's workload and preserve precious battery life whenever your device is not in use.Needless to say, this tweak offers huge benefits, like no longer needing to manually toggle Low Power Mode separate from Do Not Disturb, along with not having to charge your device as often which can be beneficial to its battery in the long run.Don't Miss: Three Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Phone's Battery Best of all, LowPowerDND is free and available within Cydia outright, which means no external repos to install. The tweak also will work in full once installed, saving you the time and hassle of having to manually play with various settings for its features to kick in, as you'll see below.

Step 1: Install LowPowerDNDOpen the Cydia app on your iPhone, tap the magnifying glass icon in the lower right, then input "lowpowerdnd" in the search field. Tap on the result of the same name when you see it, then tap "Install" in the upper right of the Details page to proceed with installing LowPowerDND. On the tweak's confirmation page, tap "Confirm" in the upper right to finalize the installation. The tweak will now be downloaded onto your device, so wait for the process to complete. Select "Restart SpringBoard" after it's done to respring your iPhone and finish installing LowPowerDND.

Step 2: Set Do Not Disturb (& Therefore Low Power Mode)LowPowerDND instantly takes effect once your iPhone resprings, and it will automatically enable Low Power Mode every time you enter into Do Not Disturb. So if you've scheduled Do Not Disturb to kick in every evening, Low Power Mode will work in conjunction with the feature to further conserve energy and kick you off the habit of overnight charging.

Step 3: Adjusting LowPowerDND's Settings (Optional)You can access LowPowerDND at any time by opening its tab that's found within your iPhone's Settings app. From there, you can disable the tweak outright by tapping on the toggle to turn it off. "Disable Low Power with DND" is also enabled by default, though you can switch it off if you'd like Low Power Mode to stay on whenever you exit out of Do Not Disturb. It's worth noting that LowPowerDND doesn't interfere with Low Power Mode in any way. Apple's feature will still function as it should, and you can turn it on manually without enabling Do Not Disturb in the process. It will also still appear as an option that you can enable when your battery level dips to 20 and 10 percent. Low Power Mode will also automatically disable whenever your iPhone's battery reaches 80 percent capacity while charging, unless you enabled LowPowerDND beforehand.Don't Miss: How to Jailbreak iOS 11 on Your iPhone — No Computer RequiredFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Grouped Notifications in iOS 12 Makes Browsing Alerts on Your iPhone Way Less Annoying

How To: Grouped Notifications in iOS 12 Makes Browsing Alerts on Your iPhone Way Less Annoying
Apple's linear Notification Center has been scattershot at best since iOS 9 when we could group notifications by app. Without any type of grouping ability, the notification history becomes more of a nuisance of random alerts based on time alone, making it a treasure hunt to find the notification wanted. Now, iOS 12 has addressed this issue, bringing back groupings — with improvements.

Automatic GroupingWhile you had to opt into notifications grouped by apps back in iOS 9, you don't have to opt into anything in iOS 12 to get grouped alerts on your iPhone. By default, they are set to "Automatic" grouping for each application — neat, organized stacks that significantly declutter your Notification Center and lock screen.Don't Miss: How to Download iOS 12 on Your iPhone Right Now Grouped notifications on the lock screen in iOS 12. In this "Automatic" setting, contents from the same app are organized in separate groups, like two stacks of message notifications for two different contacts, three different stacks for three different news sources from the News app, and so forth. It definitely streamlines alerts, making the history a lot more convenient overall. Grouped notifications with the default "Automatic" setting in iOS 12.

By App GroupingIn addition to the default "Automatic" grouping, you have the option of grouping notifications "By App," just like you could in iOS 9 back in the day. This option could be found in each app's "Notifications" settings in the "Notification Grouping" section. Choosing "By App" for an individual app will lump all of its notifications into one single stack to make hunting for alerts even easier.Full Guide: Group Notifications by Apps Instead of Smart Stacks in iOS 12 The Apple News app's notifications grouped "By App" instead of "Automatic."

Going Back to iOS 11's Non-Grouping AlertsIn the "Notification Grouping" settings for each app, you can also choose "Off," which will return them to single ungrouped notifications based on time alone. Unfortunately, Apple failed to include a system-wide switch for grouping automatically, by app, or no grouping at all, so everything has to be done on a per-app basis. Hopefully, this will change in future iOS 12 updates. Apple News groupings off (left) as well as Dictionary and Flipboard (right).

Interacting with Notifications & GroupsExpanding the stack into individual notifications couldn't be any easier — just tap on the stack to reveal all the notifications in the group. From there, you can interact with each individual alert just like you could before. You can also tap "Show Less" to put them back in their stacked view.Tap on one or swipe right on it to open it, 3D Touch on it to peek into it, do a short left swipe to reveal the "View" option (which is the same as a 3D Touch peek) and "Clear" option, or do a long left swipe to clear it right away. These options also appear for groups, not just individual notifications, so you can perform actions for many alerts at once. However, 3D Touching or selecting "View" will just peek into the first notification. Opening a group only opens the first notification and leaves the others in your notifications history. Expanding/contracting notifications (left) and swipe gestures (right). Additionally, when you do a short left swipe on a notification or group of notifications, there will be the "Manage" button, which pulls up the "Instant Tuning" options where you can choose to deliver them quietly or more prominently, turn them off altogether, or jump into the app's notifications settings for fine-tuning. Instant Tuning also appears when you tap the ellipsis icon (•••) on a notification when peeking at it.Full Guide: How Instant Tuning Works for Notifications in iOS 12 Accessing the "Instant Tuning" menu via the ellipsis in peek mode. Overall, this new notifications system is a great addition to iOS. The groupings make it so much easier to stay organized, no matter how you like your alerts on the lock screen or in the history. Now we're just hoping for an option to group all apps by apps or automatic stacks versus just doing it one by one.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

You can quickly view your recent notifications from the Lock screen by picking up your iPhone * or waking your iPad. You can also do these things from the Lock Screen: Tap a single notification or a group of notifications to view all of them for that app. Swipe left over notifications to manage, view, or clear the notifications.

If your iPhone pairs to an Apple Watch, by design your paired iPhone does not chime when a new text arrives. Instead, Apple routes your alerts to your Apple Watch, especially when the iPhone is locked. As of now, there is no option to play a sound alert on BOTH your Apple Watch and your iPhone at the same time.

Safari 101: How to Block Cross-Site Tracking on Your iPhone

Safari 101: How to Block Cross-Site Tracking on Your iPhone
While it's easy enough to ask websites not to track your browsing activity in Safari, they do not have to honor your request. Plus, some of the third-party content providers that websites use can actually invasively track you across other websites. Thankfully, iOS 11 includes a way to minimize companies from tracking you across the web on your iPhone. Before we get to messing with the settings, let's talk a little about what cross-site scripting actually is. Not all content on a website you visit originates from that website. A lot will come from the website's partners and other third parties such as advertising firms. Those third parties will serve you information or ads from their own websites even though you are not visiting them directly.Don't Miss: How to Ask Websites Not to Track Your Browsing Activity in Safari These are what third-party cookies are for, but Safari has always blocked them in the past. However, third parties have always been able to get around this restriction by developing first-party cookies, ones meant to be used on the visited site only. The cookie is written using the advertiser's own domain, and they can access the information from that cookie and use it on other sites from a third-party context. To better explain this, let's say you visit a product on Amazon's website in Safari, a first-party cookie will save your search. Once you close the tab and visit another website, you may see ads for the product you were just looking at on Amazon because advertisers can read that first-party cookie from a third-party context. And those ads could follow you around for weeks until it's believed you're no longer interested.
How This All Plays Out in Safari on Your iPhoneApple's new feature in iOS 11, called Intelligent Tracking Prevention in WebKit, puts restrictions on how advertisers can use the data from that originating cookie. While it doesn't block all cross-site scripting, it does do it in an "intelligent" manner by using your browser's history and determining which sites can have access to which cookies and when.If you visit example.com, Safari will think that you're interested in the site, obviously, and it will allow cross-site tracking across other domains for 24 hours. Every time you visit example.com, the timer will be reset for another 24 hours. If you don't visit example.com again within 24 hours, Safari will believe you're no longer interested, and it will prevent cross-site tracking across other domains. The cookie will still remain on example.com but will be partitioned so it can't be used in a third-party context. This enables a cookie to still contain your login information so if you visit it again later, you can still login easily, without being tracked across websites all of the time. If you don't visit example.com again within 30 days, Safari will automatically delete or purge all of the cookies for that domain.

How to Check if Intelligent Tracking Prevention Is EnabledBy default, the Intelligent Tracking Prevention feature is already enabled in iOS 11. However, if you or someone else has been messing with the settings, you might want to verify that it's on. Or, if you ever decide you don't like the feature, you can, of course, opt out.Don't Miss: How to Clear Your Recently Closed Tabs List in Safari Head over to "Safari" in your Settings app, then scroll down to the Privacy & Security section. Here you will find "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking." If you want to use the feature, just make sure it's toggled on (green). While cross-site tracking prevention won't eliminate any privacy or security risks for you as you browse the web, you should feel comfortable knowing any would-be trackers have one less tool to use against you and the private information.Advertising firms fought hard to prevent Apple from including this feature in iOS 11, and since then, The Guardian reported in Jan. 2018 that Intelligent Tracking Prevention has cost ad companies millions of dollars since Sept. 2017.If you want to go even further, you could block all cookies in Safari, but that could make some websites not function as you're used to, and your login data won't be saved, as well as search history, which could actually be useful in some situations.Don't Miss: 24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right NowFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Easily View Your Current Cellular Data Usage on Your iPhone

How To: Easily View Your Current Cellular Data Usage on Your iPhone
If you can't afford an unlimited plan, you're limited to a certain amount of data each month on your iPhone. Even some unlimited data plans have carrier-imposed mobile data caps that throttle the user if they exceed them. Keeping track of your exact usage each day will help make sure you don't get billed more or throttled like a chump near the end of the month.Whether you have 1 GB or 10 GB of data to work with or even "unlimited," it's imperative that you know how to monitor your usage effectively so you don't accidentally exceed your limit and either incur unwanted charges or get stuck with slow connectivity and SD videos.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Disable for Maximum iPhone Security There are three main ways to keep tabs on your mobile data on your iPhone; Some users will be able to see the stats right in their Settings app, while everyone else will have to rely on their carrier's app and/or widget. There are also third-party apps such as My Data Manager that could help you out, but we'll just concentrate on the more official methods here.
Method 1: View Usage in the Settings AppThe easiest way to view your cellular data usage is within the Settings app, but this is only really helpful for users who have T-Mobile or some overseas carrier. If you have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, you won't be able to see your actual data usage, but you will still be able to work out a method for estimating your monthly data usage, though, it's easier to just use Method 2 or 3 below instead.

If You Have T-Mobile ...Go to "Cellular" from inside Settings, and look for your carrier's section. If you see an option called "Usage" under your carrier submenu, tap on that to see how much data you used for the current month out of your limit. It should also give you details about when it was last updated, as well as when your billing cycle ends.

If You Have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon ...In the "Cellular" settings, scroll down a bit to the Cellular Data section. Here, your iPhone will show you how much data you've used in the "Current Period" and on an app-to-app basis. You'll notice that during my current period, I've used 114 GB of data! That's because the usage stats don't reset themselves automatically at the end of the month. You have do this manually yourself at the start of every billing cycle if you even know when that is. Scroll down to the bottom and hit "Reset Statistics" at the beginning of your data cycle, and your iPhone will track how much mobile data you use.

Method 2: View Usage with Your Carrier's AppEach carrier has their own app, and it's likely that you already have it installed if you ever paid your bill from your iPhone before. If not, just head to the App Store and find yours by searching for the name of your carrier there. For example, Verizon's app for viewing your personal account information is called "My Verizon." Below is a quick list to the most common carrier apps.myAT&T myCricket MyMetro My Sprint Mobile T-Mobile U.S. Cellular – My Account My Verizon Using My Verizon as an example, once opened and logged in, it will immediately show how much data you or your family used and how much time is left in the month. By going to the "Data Hub" (either by tapping on the data remaining note or from the app's menu), you can see even more detailed information about the mobile data stats for the current month. Other carrier apps work similarly.

Method 3: View Usage with a WidgetSome carriers (not all) also have widgets available with their account management apps. Verizon is one of the few who provides one, but you can still check and make sure by following these steps.First, if you have an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, just press firmly on the app's icon on the home screen to bring up the menu. If you see a widget there, you know your carrier has one. If not, they don't. For those of you who do see a widget, it'll show all your stats right there. You can also tap "Add Widget" to add it to your Today View page that can be accessed from anywhere.Alternatively, you can view your Today View page by swiping right from the home screen, from the lock screen, or from the notification center, tap "Edit" at the bottom of it, then look for and add your carrier app's widget (if one exists) to the included side to see your widget everywhere. All three of these methods are effective, though the latter two are necessary for accurate tracking if you don't have T-Mobile. Still, the most important aspect of this is that you're able to easily see how you're doing with regards to data, to avoid overages or throttling. And you could always check out third-party solutions if you're not happy with these methods.Don't Miss: Save Cellular Data by Using Wi-Fi Only for FaceTime Audio & Video CallsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
