How To: 40,000+ Ways to Customize the Android Home Screen on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (No Root Required)

How To: 40,000+ Ways to Customize the Android Home Screen on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (No Root Required)
Customizing isn't all rooting and ROMs—there are plenty of ways to customize your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or other Android device without gaining superuser access. One of the easiest ways is to install an Android launcher, sometimes called a home launcher, that matches your style. The launcher you already have, TouchWiz Home, is essentially just an app that controls the user interface of the homescreen, allowing you to view widgets and open apps easily. Since this is just an app, it makes it easy to swap it out with another without rooting or gaining any special privileges. We've already covered a few Android launchers, like GYF Side Launcher, Everything.me Home, Grenade Launcher, Tile Launcher, and even Facebook Home. However, searching for a new launcher on Google Play that gives you what you want can be a long and boring process, since Google Play is not all just launcher apps. Now, there's a better way to search for personalized home launchers—and there's over 40,000 possibilities to choose from. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Use Buzz Launcher & Homepack BuzzBuzz Launcher, free on Google Play, is a launcher that allows you to not only download and customize a new homescreen look for your device, but also let's you create your very own homescreen and share it via the Homepack Buzz service, along with recommending your favorites app and widget layouts.
Start with the Introductory TutorialWhen you open up Buzz Launcher for the first time, you'll be taken through a short tutorial of the things you can do with the app. After you've swiped through the tutorial, you'll be asked to pick from a handful of default homescreen themes from Homepack Buzz.

Picking Your First New Home Screen ThemeOnce you pick one you like, you'll be asked "Shall we bring previous homescreen?", which is (a slightly confusing way of) asking if you want your original homescreen pages incorporated into the new theme. I checked yes to see what it would look like, but it was pretty messy, so I suggest you tap on No need to bring and start fresh.

Tweaking Your New Theme's LayoutThe new homescreen will then download onto your device, allowing you to tweak the amount of home pages and in what order you want them. Tap Confirm at the bottom of the screen when you're all done. You'll then be taken to your new homescreen. From there, you can edit, resize, and remove the boxes and widgets on the screen simply by holding your finger down on each.

Download Your Own Home ScreenSince you only have a handful of default homescreens to choose from in the beginning tutorial, you can tap on your phone's Menu button and press Homepack Buzz. From here, you'll find over 40,000 user-created homescreens to choose from—the majority of them for free. Once you find a homescreen that you like, tap on it and download. You can then edit the screens by moving around the status bar, page indicators, dock bar, and labels. You can also change the dimensions of the homescreen, as well as the amount of pages it has. Once you're done, press Submit to upload the new homescreen.
Getting HelpIf you're ever confused about what to do, a question mark will appear from time to time in the upper right-hand corner (like in the screenshot above on the left). Tapping on it will explain how to navigate through the page you're on.

Edit/Design Widgets on Your Home ScreenIf you see that some widgets/spaces on the homescreen are "greyed out" or have a download sign on them, you can tap on them to install whatever it is that you need to make them function. I needed Buzz Custom Widget for my homescreen, so I was directed to the Play Store download. If you don't like the way the widgets look, you can also redesign them with the Buzz Custom Widget app. Just tap on the Buzz Custom Widget icon (a red b) at the top left of the screen. You can change the decor, size, color, and overall design of the widget, which is pretty awesome. Once you're done, save the widget design and put it on your homescreen.

Edit Icons on Your Home ScreenIf there are icons that you want to change, you can hold down on them and change the app that the icon corresponds to and picture the icon has. I chose to put GTA Vice City on my homescreen and then used a picture of Lil' B as the icon picture. You can either use pictures you have saved on your device or download some when needed.
How Do You Like Buzz Launcher?Overall, Buzz Launcher is a huge application that may consume hours of your time, due to all of the small things you can customize and change. I would highly recommend the app if you're tired of your boring homescreen and want to liven it up with more personalization options. Plus, if you create a homescreen that you think others might want, you can upload it to the Homepack Buzz service by signing up.Going back to your original TouchWiz home screen is as simple as uninstalling Buzz Launcher from your device, as you would any other app.Let us know how you liked the app!

How To: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them Off with Your Android

How To: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them Off with Your Android
Let's say you gave your Wi-Fi password to your neighbor a while back, under the assumption that they'd only use it while they were at your house sharing stuff via Chromecast. But now, your connection is slower than it normally should be, and you have this sneaking suspicion that the dude in apartment 3C is flat-out piggybacking off of your home network.Wouldn't it be great if you could easily see exactly who is connected to your Wi-Fi network, then selectively kick devices off of your router without having to log into your router and play with confusing settings? Well, that's exactly what a new Android app from the Pixel Group development team will do for you, and it makes things incredibly simple. This would also serve as a great way to temporarily boot your kids off of Wi-Fi when they won't come downstairs for dinner, and it works well as a general network diagnostics tool, too. Really, it's almost a must-have app for rooted users, so I'll show you how it works below.Don't Miss: Make Your Android Automatically Switch to the Strongest Wi-Fi Network
Requirementrooted Android device Android 4.0.3 and up

Step 1: Install Pixel NetCutThe app that'll let you kick people off of your Wi-Fi network is called Pixel NetCut WiFi Analyzer, and it's available for free on the Google Play Store. So to start, go ahead and get it installed.Install Pixel NetCut WiFi Analyzer for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant Root & Scan Your NetworkOpen the app, then tap "Grant" on the Superuser access request. From here, you'll be taken to Pixel NetCut's main menu, where you should tap "Scan" to see all devices that are connected to your Wi-Fi network. Note that your Android device will have to be connected to the Wi-Fi network that you want to analyze, of course.

Step 3: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them OffOnce the scan is complete, you'll see a list of all the devices that are connected to your Wi-Fi router, complete with IP and MAC addresses. If you're not sure which device is which, you can select any entry from this list, then you'll see the device's manufacturer. Once you've sorted out the devices, you can even tap the pencil-shaped edit button to give each listing a nickname. Then, you'll also notice a set of green switches next to each device in the list—this is how you can boot them off of your router. Just toggle any switch to the off position, then that device will no longer be able to connect to the internet using your Wi-Fi—simple and straightforward, you gotta love that. Pixel NetCut also has a few useful network diagnostic tools. For instance, when you select a device from the list, you can see any ports that it has reserved, as well as ping and latency times. Overall, it's a great utility with several solid capabilities.Don't Miss: How to See Passwords for Wi-Fi Networks You've Connected Your Android Device ToFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

This question arises since Android 6 (where the corresponding option was removed - see How to change date and time format on Marshmallow?), and for other languages as well (for me it e.g. truncated the year to 2 digits in some apps, and choosing a different locale didn't help) - so a more general answer covering that as well would be great.

How To: Factory Reset Your Android the Right Way

How To: Factory Reset Your Android the Right Way
Whether you're performing a factory reset to get your device ready for sale or trade-in, or you're wiping your device in the hopes of fixing software issues, there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Sure, it seems like a simple task on the surface, but if you're not careful, you could end up wasting a lot of time or losing precious data.Don't Miss: 6 Easy Ways to Increase Battery Life on AndroidSo if the time has come to perform a factory reset on your Android device, fret not, because the tips I'll cover below will ensure that the process is as quick and painless as it can be.

Step 1: Back Things Up FirstBefore you do anything else, you should definitely make sure all of your important files and photos are backed up. For documents, connect your phone to your computer with a USB data cable, then simply drag and drop files to save them (Windows), or use the Android File Transfer program to do the same (Mac). For photos, and videos, I'd recommend installing the Google Photos app, which will guide you through backing your media up to the cloud.Aside from files, there are other bits of data like apps and Wi-Fi passwords that you might want to save. If your device is running Android 5.0 or higher, there's a built-in feature that can handle this. To enable the feature, head to the "Backup & Reset" entry in Settings, then select "Back up my data" and turn the option on. The backup runs silently in the background, and it can take a while, so I'd recommend enabling this setting at least 24 hours before performing a factory reset. (1) Google Photos cloud backup, (2) "Back up my data" feature on Android 5.0+

Step 2: Make Sure You Have Enough Battery LifeWith everything safely backed up, you're just about ready to perform a factory reset. But before you do so, make sure that you have at least 50% battery life remaining, otherwise the process could be interrupted and your device could be permanently bricked. If waiting isn't an option and you're below 50%, at least make sure to plug your phone in using the charger it came with, as this is generally the fastest power supply.

Step 3: Perform Reset from Within Settings, Not Recovery ModeThere have always been two main ways to perform a factory reset on Android—either from within your phone's main Settings menu, or from Android's Recovery Mode interface. But because of Android's new Factory Reset Protection (FRP) feature, the Recovery Mode method should not be used anymore. When you perform a factory reset from Android's Recovery Mode interface, FRP kicks in and prevents the device from being used again until you sign in with the Google account and password that was being used prior to factory resetting. This means that if you're trading in your device or getting it ready for sale, the other party would not be able to use the device unless you entered your account credentials. So when you're ready to perform a factory reset, make sure to use the Settings method. To start, head to the "Backup & reset" menu in Settings, then select "Factory data reset." From here, tap "Reset Phone" or "Reset Tablet," then confirm your choice to start the process. It should take about 10 minutes in total, at which point the device will automatically reboot. And because you used the Settings method, Factory Reset Protection will not kick in, so the device can now be used by anyone.

Step 4: Restore Your Apps (Optional)If you performed a factory reset in the hopes of resolving a software glitch, you'll need to set things back up once the process is finished. That's always a pain, but there are two tips that can make this process a lot less time-consuming.If the device is running Android 5.0 or higher, you'll see a screen labeled "Get your apps & data" during initial setup—this can be used to restore the data you backed up in Step 1. So make sure to select your device from the drop-down menu on this screen, then Android will automatically restore data like system settings and Wi-Fi passwords.Beyond that, you'll probably want to reinstall many of your old apps. The easiest way to do this is to open the Play Store app, select "My apps & games" from the side navigation menu, then swipe over to the All tab. From here, long-press any app you'd like to reinstall, then scroll through the list, tapping any other apps to batch select them. Finally, press the "Install" button at the top of this menu, then all of your selected apps will automatically be installed. News: Another Security Concern from OnePlus Backdoor Root App Comes Preinstalled on Millions of Phones

After recently being in the news for collecting PII (personally identifiable information) for analytics and after-sales support, OnePlus has another security problem. An individual going by the name Elliot Alderson discovered an app in OnePlus devices that can enable root access with one command.Although we as Android users aspire to root our devices, we are aware of the risk that rooting provides. With an app that simplifies the process, millions of devices are now vulnerable.Rooting provides system access to Android devices. By accessing the root folder, users can make changes that would otherwise be impossible without this privilege. However, this same privilege could be used by another individual to conduct a particularly nasty attack on your device. The same level of control that you may use harmlessly can be used to extract PII, listen to conversations, and many other attacks that could harm you financially. With an app simplifying this process, anyone within physical access to your device (or even remote access using malware) can exploit this backdoor.Don't Miss: Understanding Android Root (A Guide for Newbies) The app is called EngineerMode and was designed by Qualcomm to perform tests before deploying phones out to the public. OEMs are expected to remove this app once the testing is completed due to this vulnerability. The app can perform a number of tests including diagnosing sensors, checking root status, and providing root access without unlocking the bootloader.Therein lies the problem: Android has security mechanisms in place to ensure that once a phone's bootloader is unlocked to enable root using traditional methods, all data is automatically wiped. But since this app can grant root without unlocking the bootloader, another app that exploited this backdoor could bypass these security mechanisms and theoretically access all of your existing data.Elliot Alderson, upon discovering the application, speculated that it could be used to root devices by finding a simple password. The NowSecure Research Team answered the call and learned the password that enables this simple root method OnePlus devices. To root a device, the DiagEnabled function must be launched from the app. This function has a method called escalatedUp which, when given the correct password, will root devices.By inputting the following command using ADB, you can root your device:adb shell am start -n com.android.engineeringmode/.qualcomm.DiagEnabled --es "code" "angela"Once entered, ADB will disconnect and restart. Once you re-enter ADB, you will find that your device is rooted — with no superuser management tool like SuperSU to dole out root access, and more importantly, to deny root access to certain apps.
Update 1: More Devices Found with EngineerModeIt looks like this application has been discovered on other devices. Since it's a Qualcomm application, any device using a Qualcomm SoC could potentially still have this APK installed.According to Alderson, devices from Xiaomi, Motorola, and ASUS have been found with this app on consumer models. To see if the app is on your device, navigate to the "Apps" menu in Settings, then tap the three-dot menu button in the upper-right corner (or along the bottom of the screen) and select "Show System processes." From there, if you see an app called "EngineerMode," your device is vulnerable to this exploit.OnePlus's Carl Pei has replied to Elliot Alderson, stating "Thanks for the heads up, we're looking into it," indicating a future update will remove this system app. Hopefully, a complete list of affected devices will emerge so other OEMs will also send out a fix.In the meantime, according to Alderson, the upcoming OnePlus 5T will have the same app preinstalled. Hopefully, OnePlus can get to the bottom of this soon.
Update 2: OnePlus RespondsWell that was fast. OnePlus staff member OmegaHsu posted on the OnePlus forum Monday night addressing the issue. In the post, OmegaHsu explains that, although EngineerMode can potentially root the device via ADB commands, third parties cannot trigger the exploit to acquire root privileges. An app cannot send ADB commands from within Android, so EngineeringMode theoretically shouldn't be susceptible to malware attacks like the recently discovered Toast Overlay bug. The process would also need USB debugging to be enabled in the phone's settings, which is disabled by default and would require physical access to enable. OmegaHsu further explains that, due to customer concern, ADB root commands will be removed from EngineerMode in a coming OTA, although the company does not see ADB root as a security threat. So, what do you think? With the OnePlus 5T announcing in a few days, does this latest security problem make you reconsider the device? Let us know in the comments below. How To: Your One-Stop Guide to Secure, Encrypted Messaging

How To: Your One-Stop Guide to Secure, Encrypted Messaging
Now that smartphones have ensured that we're connected to the internet 24/7, online privacy has become more important than ever. With data-mining apps hoping to sell your information for targeted ads, and government agencies only one subpoena away from knowing every detail of your private life, encryption has become our last line of defense. It was recently revealed that iMessage, the iPhone's default messaging app, can send some bits of data to Apple, even though messages were previously thought to be fully encrypted. Other popular platforms have unforeseen security issues, too, so end-to-end encryption is only part of the story. But which encrypted messaging app is the most secure, and truly the most private? Below, we break down some of the most popular options available right now, and highlight their strengths and weaknesses. This list may expand as new companies integrate encryption in the near future. For an Up-to-Date Guide: Check Out the 4 Best Apps for Private, Encrypted Messaging on Android & iOS

WhatsApp Messenger WhatsApp has been a heavy favorite worldwide for its ease in sending and receiving instant messages, including audio, video, and documents. It currently boasts a user base of one billion, and had recently finished rolling out end-to-end encryption for everyone, and WhatsApp claims to not have access to these encrypted messages at all.Users on older versions of WhatsApp might not have encryption enabled, so make sure to always stay updated with the current version. If you want to verify that you have end-to-end encryption with another user, you can use a QR code and 60-digit passcode to do so.The drawbacks to this? The privacy is maintained only if the user endpoint devices in the chat are fully secure themselves, an issue that does plague some Android users. Users also have to ensure that they're running the latest updated version of the app, and that means you and the people you're communicating with.On top of that, WhatsApp recently reworded their privacy policy with some new terms and conditions indicating that the popular messaging platform will now share some data with Facebook, even if you're not registered with the social media site. Your conversations themselves are still off limits, but the new privacy policy is something you should be aware of nonetheless.WhatsApp for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch WhatsApp for Android WhatsApp for web

Signal Private Messenger Signal has been well received by those very sensitive to digital privacy issues, most notably by Edward Snowden himself. Created by Open Whisper Systems (who also lent assistance to WhatsApp in their implementation of end-to-end encryption), Signal offers private messaging and phone calls via their mobile and desktop apps, both of which were made available to the public after an invitation-only beta program earlier this year. What Signal offers is end-to-end encryption based on free- and open-source code, as well as added layers of security verification. The setup is easy and the layout offers large enough text within the interface. In order to contact someone through Signal, both parties need to have the app installed and then go through a security check involving correctly identifying random words to make sure you're connecting with the right person. At present, a major draw for Signal has been the full encryption of phone calls with no hitches.Like WhatsApp, they claim to have zero access to your messages.Signal for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Signal for Android Signal for desktop (via Chrome)

Viber The VoIP and instant messaging app Viber made the recently announced end-to-end encryption for all chat conversations whether they're group-based or one-on-one as well, as for all calls. This goes into effect immediately where Viber's developers are located in Belarus, Israel, Brazil, and Thailand, with a global rollout over the next few weeks. Users looking to take advantage would then need to update to the latest version of the app and then use a QR code to re-authenticate themselves. This latest move by Viber also includes a Hidden Chats feature that lets you protect certain chats with a four-digit PIN code. There is also a color-coded security system that users can utilize to verify how secure their chats are, which can come in handy given that Viber does support up to 200 users on a group chat conversation if needed. One feature that Viber hopes will attract more users is the enhanced delete feature which allows you to simply erase any evidence of a chat from your device and that of whoever else was on the chat with you. What could be tricky for those interested in the newest version of Viber? For starters, you do have to make sure you're upgraded to the latest version on your device, which could leave those with older operating systems and devices left out, including those on PCs, who'll need Windows 10. Another thing to take a wait and see about is the company's plan to introduce bots into the app as a way to expand its appeal to businesses and to incorporate other services like gaming.Viber for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Viber for Android Viber for Windows Viber for desktop

ChatSecure ChatSecure is another solid option here, as it provides Off-the-record (OTR) encryption for all messages, which is a top-notch security protocol designed by cryptographers Ian Goldberg and Nikita Borisov. ChatSecure is fully open-source, and the fact that it uses the OTR encryption standard means that it's cross-compatible with other OTR messaging clients.ChatSecure for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch ChatSecure for Android

ProtonMail ProtonMail stands out as an ancestor of sorts when it comes to the wave of end-to-end encryption services that are being provided. Created by a group of scientists from MIT and CERN, ProtonMail offers end-to-end encryption of email and is highly dependent on the user to create and remember a password to gain access to them. Users can also send and receive emails to those not using ProtonMail and still enjoy the protection of the service by manual encryption. There's even an option to give your emails an expiration date before sending them out.ProtonMail may not be as attractive to users who want to apply end-to-end encryption across all their platforms, but it still is considered a good traditional system to communicate with full privacy and does allow for users to upgrade to a premium account which lets them use a custom domain.ProtonMail for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch ProtonMail for Android ProtonMail for web

Google Allo (Incognito Mode) On the surface, a messenger app with Google's new Assistant giving you tips and search results while you're carrying on a conversation might sound like the farthest thing from secure. However, Google kept privacy-focused users in mind while developing Allo, so full end-to-end encryption is possible here. For truly secure messaging, you'll simply need to start an "Incognito Mode" chat in Allo. Once you do that, your messages will be fully encrypted from the time they leave your phone until they arrive on the recipient's device. You'll lose out on some of the cooler features with Incognito Mode, but you can get those right back by opening a non-secure chat for more lighthearted conversations.Google Allo for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch Google Allo for Android

Facebook Messenger (Secret Conversations) Similar to Allo, Facebook Messenger now supports a fully encrypted communication mode. By default, your conversations are only encrypted as the messages move from Facebook's servers to either person's device, so Zuckerberg & Co. have a chance to analyze texts along the way. However, using the new "Secret Conversations" feature, your messages will be 100% encrypted, and you can even opt to have the messages disappear from both devices after a period of time. Again, though, end-to-end encryption is only available when you start a "Secret Conversation."Facebook Messenger for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch Facebook Messenger for Android

Threema Threema has gotten a little bit of buzz, mainly among those in its origin country of Switzerland. Its user base in comparison to the others listed here is small (at last report, 3.5 million), but what's drawn people to Threema is the company's policy on protecting your metadata as well as using on an open-source code based on the NaCI Library. Plus, there's end-to-end encryption for all message types.Threema also offers a unique user ID generated by the initial app launch, and the ability to verify other users by QR code as an added layer of protection. Users can't make phone calls, but they can send voicemails, texts, and multimedia files. The company has also made it possible for businesses to send messages to clients who have the app installed in a gateway system similar to SMS gateways.Threema for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Threema for Android Threema for Amazon Threema for Windows

LINE LINE, the communications app that got its start in Japan due to a natural disaster, has grown to be used by close to 400 million worldwide. LINE is unique because their end-to-end encryption is enabled within the "Letter Sealing" feature between users in all chat room messages. However, you need to activate this feature manually, and all parties in a conversation must enable this feature also for it to be truly private.Just like Viber, it also has a Hidden Chat feature, as well as a time-limited messaging feature. And LINE claims that "no LINE employee or third party, besides the chat participants themselves, will be able to view [messages]."LINE for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch LINE for Mac OS X LINE for Android LINE for BlackBerry LINE for Windows LINE for Chrome

Telegram Telegram has emerged as a hefty rival to WhatsApp, and has been working on improving their suite of offerings to users. Included among its newer features is a new video player for iOS users, as well as a revamped chat interface for Android users. The standout feature is centered on their "Secret Chats" end-to-end encryption which users can switch on. They can then verify each other's identity with visual-based keys. The encryption Telegram offers has gotten some dubious attention due to terror groups creating secure channels with it, but the company has been vigilant in eliminating those channels once detected by their personnel. Telegram also claims to be more secure than WhatsApp and LINE.Telegram for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Telegram for Android Telegram for Windows Phone Telegram for Firefox OS Telegram for desktop (Windows/Mac/Linux) Telegram for web Telegram for Chrome

Dust Dust is a fairly new entry to the encrypted messaging app game, and comes from business titan and digital maven Mark Cuban. What makes Dust unique is that messages sent through the app never come in contact with the company's servers. In addition, messages don't get stored on a user's device and once they're read, they vanish. That alone is mind-blowing.Dust, available for iOS and Android users, was crafted with the emphasis on communicating quickly without leaving a trace, and initial reactions have gotten great feedback. Cuban has stated that future plans for the app will include expansion to other sources and a version for the Web.Cyber Dust for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Cyber Dust for Android

Surespot Surespot is less known, but has been rising in usage due to its encryption based on a public-key cryptography system and reliance on 256 AES-GCM. It offers encrypted offline backup through iTunes and local storage on Android devices. Another intriguing feature is the ability to create and use multiple identities for business purposes or regular means.Surespot claims that their servers never see the private key, so they have no way of decrypting messages from their end. Your username is also not associated with an email or phone number, which gives you even more privacy. Unfortunately, this is also a bad thing, because your password for Surespot can never be recovered or reset.Surespot for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Surespot for Android
Popular Apps Without End-to-End EncryptionThere are others that offer encryption, but not end-to-end. So if you're using these extensively, bear in mind the conditions each app has in terms of privacy.Google Hangouts: Like iMessage, all messages through this service are encrypted, even on their servers. But if legal authorities request it, Google can hand those messages over. Kik: Their messages aren't encrypted, but the company does ensure that they're erased from their servers once they're delivered to someone's device. Twitter: There's no end-to-end encryption when it comes to their direct messages, and they can be subject to review and seizure by law. Snapchat: Yes, snaps do get erased from their servers once their recipients open them up on their devices. However, those that don't get opened stay on the servers for 30 days and can be subject to review by legal authorities despite being encrypted. Skype: Their instant messages aren't encrypted and can be seized by the law if requested. WeChat: The messages aren't encrypted and can even be tracked via GPS according to some accounts.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Apps for Private, Encrypted Communications on Android & iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: 5 Easy Ways to Speed Up a Lagging Android Phone

How To: 5 Easy Ways to Speed Up a Lagging Android Phone
All phones (yes, iPhones too) slow down over time. As your device gets bogged down by various apps and you begin to run out of storage, it's just an inevitability. That doesn't make it any less frustrating ... I mean, is there anything more annoying than a slow phone? My answer: No. Of course not. It's the single most annoying thing ever.It can be difficult to identify exactly why your device isn't running as it should — it could be any combination of factors, from lacking hardware to an overload of background processes. While it's true that Android used to be a slog, these days, thanks to improvements in hardware and general OS optimizations, modern devices tend to run smoothly ... until they don't.Your phone freezes up, apps start crashing, and you feel like pulling your hair out. Before you do that though, you should address the most common culprits and try to remedy the situation by following the simple solutions in this guide. You'll be back up to speed in no time.

Tip 1: Remove Unused AppsIf you're an app junkie, you probably have more than a few applications you rarely-if-ever use. These apps not only take up storage space, but often run discreetly in the background, eating up precious system resources. The best way to find out if unused apps are unnecessarily slowing down your phone is to enable Developer Options so you can view a complete list of active processes and services — if the list is populated with processes belonging to unused apps, you can easily gain an immediate performance boost by uninstalling them.Once you've enabled Developer Options, go to Settings and tap the "Developer Options" button, then select "Running Services" to view all applications and services running on your device. Take a moment to scroll through the list and make note of any applications you aren't using, then go back to select "Application Manager" from the settings menu and you'll be able to uninstall them. Depending on your device, these menus can differ slightly. In the pictures below, you can see how they appear on my Xiaomi Mi Max 2. But what if you have apps that you can't, or don't want to uninstall? Good news, as the Developer Options menu also includes a setting for restricting the amount of background processes that can run at any one time. Simply tap the "Background process limit" option, and you can change the standard setting to anything from 1–4 background processes. As you are often restricted from uninstalling pre-loaded system applications (cough ... bloatware), you can choose to either disable them or root your device to get rid of them for good.

Tip 2: Use a 3rd-Party LauncherMuch to the chagrin of users like myself, Android manufacturers insist on using their own heavily skinned versions of Android. While some OEM launchers can add useful features, oftentimes they are poorly optimized, rarely updated, and add unnecessary bloat that makes everyday use feel sluggish. If you suspect your default launcher might be slowing you down, you should try a third-party alternative that has been developed with speed and efficiency in mind. The best launchers are lightweight to begin with and allow you to customize individual settings and features to fit your specific needs. We previously covered the five best home screen launchers, but my personal favorite is the Microsoft Launcher, which relinquished my Mi Max 2 from the perilous grips of Xiaomi's MIUI. It's not only snappy and fast, but adds some genuinely useful features worth shouting about, including the ability to continue on PC and a high performance mode, which disables visual effects.

Tip 3: Disable AnimationsBy default, Android uses animated transitions when opening and switching between various applications. These transitions take up precious seconds which can add up over time and slow you down. Reducing or completely disabling them is one of the quickest and easiest things you can do to make your phone feel faster — heavy emphasis on the word feel here, as this trick doesn't actually speed up your device in the traditional sense, but simply saves on those seconds lost. It doesn't sound like much, but the difference really is night and day.To change animation settings, you'll need to enable Developer Options, then return to select "Developer Options" from the settings menu and scroll until you find the following settings:Window animation scale Transition animation scale Animator duration scale Set each one to either "Animation off" or "Animation scale .5x" if you would prefer to have faster animations rather than no animations.

Tip 4: Free Up StorageRunning low on storage is guaranteed to bring your phone to a crawl — Android needs a little headroom to perform everyday tasks, and having to repeatedly load and reference thousands of files scattered across a drive takes up both time and resources. Random files, applications, updates, and media can add up quickly, so every now and then a spring clean is in order to free up space and get things under control. You can identify what's taking up your device's storage by opening the "Settings" menu and tapping "Storage". Here you'll see the following breakdown:Cached data Pictures & Videos Audio Apps & app data Cached data serves to speed up general use by storing bits of frequently accessed data so that it doesn't need to be downloaded over and over again. If your device is full, however, that cached data can inadvertently slow things down. If cached data has been corrupted, or contains errors, it can also cause applications to freeze up. Clearing cached data is a simple way to free up storage and fix any misbehaving apps. All you need to do is tap "Cached data" and select "OK" when prompted to delete. If photos and other media are taking up too much space, you can either back everything up to local storage or use a cloud storage app which gives you the option to have the files automatically deleted from your device once they've been saved. Google's stock Google Photos application allows for free and unlimited automatic backups, providing your photos and videos are within the 16 megapixel and 1080p limit — anything beyond that will use your available Google Drive storage. I currently use Microsoft's OneDrive app, which automatically uploads my photos and videos to my 1 TB OneDrive cloud storage account, which is included as part of my Microsoft 365 subscription. If you're suffering from app and download bloat, you should uninstall anything that's not being used and take a moment to clear out your download folder. Games can be a big offender here! You can clear everything manually or use a storage management utility such as Google's Files Go application, which will help you identify and easily delete any junk files and applications you aren't using.
Tip 5: Install Lite Versions of ApplicationsAs your favorite apps are updated, features are often added that increase their storage footprint and cause them to run slower than before. Some of these updates can even render the applications to be incompatible with lower-end hardware. As a result, many popular apps are now accompanied by lite versions, which strip things down to include all but the most essential features.Facebook provides lite versions of both its Facebook application and the Messenger application. I have been using both for some time now — they're fast and efficient, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on any additional features found in the full-fat versions.Other popular lite applications include the following — try them out to eke out another little boost in performance:Twitter Lite LinkedIn Lite Skype Lite YouTube Go Google Go Gmail Go Google Maps GoDon't Miss: Boost Fortnite Performance on Android by Changing These SettingsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Set Up Digital Wellbeing in Android Pie to Curb Your Smartphone Usage

Is your smartphone taking over your life? Do you need help putting your Pixel down at night? Well, update to Android Pie! Android 9.0 comes with Digital Wellbeing, a new tool to both help you understand your smartphone habits and perhaps step away from the apps, games, and notifications every now and then.As you'll soon see, Digital Wellbeing is still in beta. You'll need to be patient with the tool — even though it looks complete, it may ship with some bugs and glitches. If you encounter anything strange, you can always tap the three dots at the top-right corner of the main Digital Wellbeing screen and select "Send feedback."To access Digital Wellbeing, you'll need to enroll in the beta program. There are two signup links you can use, or you can simply sideload the APK. We've outlined that process at the following link.Don't Miss: How to Get Digital Wellbeing in Android Pie Right Now Once you have Digital Wellbeing installed, simply open your Settings app, then locate and select "Digital Wellbeing" from the list. If you don't see it right away, use the search feature at the top of Settings to look for "Digital Wellbeing," then the menu should show up. Once selected, the tool will then load, with the Digital Wellbeing wheel the first thing to see.The wheel contains your top used apps as well as a total amount of phone use for the day. You can tap on any of the apps around the wheel to open an individualized page for that app (but more on that later). Under the wheel, you'll find "Dashboard." Here, you can get a full layout of data for your phone use. By default, you'll see your phone use for the current day, but you can simply tap the arrow next to the date to move through your recorded days.Screen time is the first metric you will see, which is a measure of how much time you've spent looking at your phone. But tap the arrow in the blue "Screen time" box, and you'll also be able to see "Notifications received" and "Times opened" data for your apps, listed beneath the charts below. Tap any to open its individual page mentioned above, as well as view any of the three data sets mentioned above.

Set App TimersFrom the dashboard, you can also set app timers. These timers keep your use for specific apps in check by locking you out after a set time. For example, if you allot yourself 15 minutes of Facebook time, Facebook will deactivate after 15 minutes of use until midnight. Be careful when setting timers for yourself, especially with apps that you need to access at any point. To set a timer, tap the "No timer" arrow next to the corresponding app in the Dashboard. Next, select from 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or a custom timer. Once set, you can return to this page to check in on how much time you have left with the app for the day. This same action is available from any app's individual Digital Wellbeing page.

Wind Down & Do Not DisturbDigital Wellbeing also lets you control when you want your phone to begin wrapping up for the day, by creating a more relaxing environment to use your phone in. To start, you can set an automated period of time for Wind Down to start and end. You can also choose to use "Grayscale" and add a Night Light schedule during this period, to make your phone's display easier on your eyes. When you enable Night Light, your change the tint of your device to become more orange. You can choose the intensity of that tint after selecting "Turn on now" in the "Night Light" setting. Of course, you can also enable Do Not Disturb settings for Wind Down as well. You can't change Do Not Disturb's settings from Wind Down, however, so unless you simply want to enable or disable the feature, make sure to access it from the main Digital Wellbeing page to change all settings.Under Do Not Disturb, you have the option to choose sounds and vibrations that remain enabled, how notifications sound (if at all), how calls are allowed to come through, if messages, reminders, and events are allowed, Do Not Disturb's schedule, and whether or not to enable the feature automatically. When you're ready to enable Do Not Disturb, tap "Turn on now" at the bottom of this page, or return to Wind Down and enable the Do Not Disturb slider.

NotificationsFinally, there's notifications. If you've ever customized your app's notifications in Android before, you'll be right at home here. The only difference is Android conveniently rounds up all of your apps into the Digital Wellbeing tool, so you can access their notification settings while working on your other settings too. From the main Digital Wellbeing page, tap "Manage Notifications." You'll see a complete list of all of your Android device's apps. You can tap the three dots in the upper-right corner and tap "Show system" to show system notifications settings as well. You can sort this list by "Most recent" or "Most frequent" by tapping on the blue bar at the top of the display.Tap the slider next to each app to enable or disable notifications for each. To see more detailed notification settings, simply tap on the name of the app. You can access an app's notification settings from its individual Digital Wellness page, as well.
